- tenio, on 07/03/2008, -0/+91 billboard in times square solar powered! only 500 left to go...
- trghpy, on 07/03/2008, -0/+9wow, my neighborhood could be powered by the same amount of energy as the creation of visual manure.
- serif69, on 07/03/2008, -0/+8Sun? No. Wind? Definitely. Updrafts alone could probably power this.
- inactive, on 07/03/2008, -1/+8Yay! Environmentally friendly obnoxious advertising! I'll sell my body to a corporation as long as it doesn't hurt the dolphins.
- jpop, on 07/03/2008, -0/+6Not being in NY, is there really enough sun and wind in December for it to power the billboard all night?
- junkwheel, on 07/03/2008, -0/+5I think it is wrong to use the Sun and wind to advertise things.
I'm going to start an online petition. - defektiv, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4finally, an answer to our energy crisis! at least its a step in the right direction..
- Mykol225, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4Flashy billboard = 18 tons carbon dioxide emissions!
Am I the only one amazed by the amount that the earth has been able to take thus far? - aggiejaa, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3"Its floodlights will be powered on site by 45 solar panels and four wind turbines. "
Wait so is it 100% powered by the sun and wind or is it just the flood lights? 18 tons of carbon dioxide seems a bit much to power just the lights. - winmywii, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3Seems like a waste of good energy.
- TheHayze, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3That'll sure bring an end to their evil monopoly of our sun, and wind!
- bbqsalad, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3***** times square. That place is ridiculous, Its like being trapped inside a computer over-run by adware and popups but there is no way to close them.
- Dante001, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2You know I would bet if all the billboards in time sq were solar powered we would have this global warming thing licked. Next stop Las Vagas?
- phreak79, on 07/03/2008, -1/+3A good concept but it does seem a lot of panels and turbines to power one television screen.
- generic0user, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2"All the skyscrapers will be blocking the way of the sun, don't see the point here"
Don't you think they thought of that first. This was done by a for profit company. Someone who isn't on-line posting stuff all day did a cost-benefit analysis and realized that with all the self satisfaction people get from "going green" it makes since that they would be satisfied by companies following suit. It is a PR stunt that is obviously going to work. - MSP1, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2Think about it another way. What an absurd way to waste all the power that all those panels can generate.
- apextek, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2the world has been saved now that a billboard in times square runs from the sun.
sarcasm - aookay, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2They took something annoying (billboards) and combined it with something we like (being eco-freindly).
Those bastards. - Frost9999, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2I would like to point out that powering something with solar/wind does not make it environmentally friendly. It makes one part of it better. If you want to consider the whole manufacturing process of the billboard, the people and machines that maintain it, the disposal after however many years of use, etc etc... then you might get close to appreciating just how much more can be done.
Ad blocking is going to be a killer application for augmented reality systems as they become more common. - izack, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2You know what would have been more environmentally friendly? Not having it in the first place, this is stupid.
- Bmarofsky, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1RTFA:
On days lacking enough solar or wind power, the sign will go un-illuminated, Marchetta said.
"If the floodlights aren't on, you'll be able to see the sign. You just won't have the lights on it," - beauley, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1With Global Warming on many people's minds, do we have any ideas of the best way to lessen the impact on our future, or maybe a possible relief of its possible ravages or even a possible key to its eventual reversal. Many scientific experts have proposed

Solar Power, Source of Endless Energy - Dante001, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Dude shhhhhhhhh not here they will see.
- BigManOnCampus, on 07/03/2008, -1/+1So, at midnight on new years, it'll be running on lead-acid batteries.
- 101phones, on 07/03/2008, -1/+1All the skyscrapers will be blocking the way of the sun, don't see the point here.
- Kanele, on 07/03/2008, -0/+0way to excuse all the abuses
- AmericansRevolt, on 07/03/2008, -0/+0i've always been a bit unsettled everytime i see video of times square. i think "how can i be called an energy waster when that tv uses more juice in a day then my house does in a month?" now i'm not so worried about it anymore.
i digg it. - katiesun, on 12/06/2008, -0/+0 It makes one part of it better. If you want to consider the whole manufacturing process of the billboard, the people and machines that maintain it, the disposal after however many years of use http://www.mirc34.net/

- jmartin1117, on 07/04/2008, -0/+0probably not big enough to make much of a difference to global warming by itself, but good to see them setting a positive example
- AmericansRevolt, on 07/03/2008, -0/+0with that many solar panels and wind turbines, it BETTER power everything....
