brng me sum wtr? - Nidis, on 06/05/2009, -0/+11I'd probably be confused as hell thinking it was a drunk friend being stupid.
- DamonToo, on 06/05/2009, -0/+10Well, here's a "twitter plant" that tells you if the soil needs water. $100 though.. for 1. A bit more than 5 cents. A bit larger too.
- GlassAgate, on 06/05/2009, -1/+10If the plant requests a few drops of blood, kill it with fire.
- Genecalypse, on 06/05/2009, -0/+7And TreeNet was born.
- skipvt, on 06/05/2009, -0/+6I receive the following text messages from my houseplants
From: Boston Fern
All you base are belong to us.
From: Spider Plant
You have no chance to survive make your time.
From: Begonia
Ha Ha Ha Ha! - GoKings, on 06/05/2009, -0/+5Thirty plants doesn't seem like a lot.
- barfnugget, on 06/05/2009, -1/+5The plants will become self aware, and at first we will think this is incredible. Until they start sending messages like that, and we realize they might be self aware, but they are also stupid.
- ronindigg, on 06/05/2009, -0/+3first of all, israel is not a desert
second, solar power doesnt mean you need direct sunlight - stuffradio, on 06/05/2009, -0/+3Imagine receiving 5,000 text messages at once... damn.
- inactive, on 06/05/2009, -0/+3It might be a lot more expensive to set up but it would be awesome if that message was sent to a sprinkler instead of a farmer. I'd work on an automated farm like that.
- cawpin, on 06/05/2009, -1/+3WTF? how many times is this stupid ***** going to be on here? This text messaging plant idea was introduced over a year ago.
- Royish, on 06/05/2009, -0/+2Eat that PETA.
- freshgrease, on 06/05/2009, -0/+2Next thing you know, they will be using twitter to tweet their plant friends.
"Drinkin mah MiracleGrow...OMNOMNOMNOM"
-> "Give me some :["
-->"Wait your turn. He'll be right over." - malcolmlo, on 06/05/2009, -0/+2I want one for my new bonsai. I am a horrible gardener and sticking my finger in the soil (when I remember to) is my current method. I think I would find my plant is pretty pissed off most of the time if I attached one of these to it.
- isunktheship, on 06/05/2009, -0/+2this article is older than plant-life if that's even possible
- DamonToo, on 06/05/2009, -0/+1Forgot the link -

I bet this will sell with hardcore plant people or even say on a farm say spread out evenly but not on the plants to be harvested.
very interesting and lots of potential. - inactive, on 06/05/2009, -0/+1FEED ME
- kingfoot, on 06/05/2009, -0/+1only 100 though? i would say thats already cheap, relatively speaking.
- forcemarine, on 06/05/2009, -0/+1that really is a pretty amazing idea, lets get this ***** going
- freshgrease, on 06/05/2009, -0/+1Man will still have fire and Roundup(TM).
- bacon_skoda, on 06/05/2009, -0/+1this is the third time i've seen this. 2nd time was the twitter thing.
next up....(crossing fingers)...elevator hack. - inactive, on 06/05/2009, -0/+1Twitter plant?
"Still here in same spot, glad it rained though. Hope I get more followers" - IKORKYI, on 06/05/2009, -0/+1"can now" ????
you could have done this for almost a decade with the arduino revisions
all you do is have it communicate through bluetooth with an attached sensor to a computer which sends an email to your number...

cost to do this yourself is about $80
i made one for my dogs water that I attached to an ecv that notifies me when she is out of water, fills her dish, and lets me know it was filled succesfully via email (by literally copying someone elses work) - lear, on 06/05/2009, -0/+1that's effin' crazy!
- PsychoPNut, on 06/05/2009, -0/+1can you be exact? i don't believe you.
- Yage2006, on 06/06/2009, -0/+1Nice for pot growers who are too stoned to take care of their plants.
- randumbusername, on 06/05/2009, -0/+1how ever did plants make it.
- HillBully, on 06/05/2009, -0/+1brp.. kthxbye
- gdha, on 06/05/2009, -0/+1It is truly amazing that we have such technology, also amazing people can figure out when to water their plants....
- inactive, on 06/05/2009, -1/+1*rape alert*
- mlc1138, on 06/05/2009, -1/+1OLD. About 6 months.
- askantik, on 06/05/2009, -1/+1??
- sirchlight, on 06/06/2009, -0/+0If you actually read the article it states that their solar unit is only produces the bare minimum of electricity to save costs. The device is being tested in the Israeli desert (where they REALLY need this tech) so that would draw me to conclude it's been optimized for this environment, confirmed by the article by the statement they made about not being clear on battery function or ability (it's cheap ... their stated goal). There are many agricultural operations where the environment doesn't provide sunlight for extended periods (long rains, heavy clouds, etc) not to mention all the smaller operations in even more extreme conditions.
- inactive, on 06/05/2009, -1/+0Submittor makes it seem like plants are typing messages. This is just a dirt sensor. BFD.
- rogueblade, on 06/05/2009, -2/+1i'd like to put one of these chips on a vagina
- jdizzle88, on 06/05/2009, -4/+1DAMN HIPPIES ....*Cue Pedobear*
- sirchlight, on 06/05/2009, -3/+0this is actually a very good idea for conserving water and thus decreasing cost. only problem i see is that it uses solar power and what would the rest of us who don't live in Israel (desert) do when it's anything but sunny?
