- Smokeydabear, on 05/01/2009, -1/+23No, it was my bathroom this morning.
- kingofinternet, on 05/01/2009, -0/+16Interesting, citation?
- nmezib, on 05/01/2009, -3/+13unfortunately PIttsburgh is ranked #2... which is very inaccurate. According to the study that was conducted, they only took one sample from the many air quality sensors, and that one sample just happened to be just 3 miles from a major coal processing plant in New Castle. Why they chose to ignore all the other air quality indicators throughout the Pittsburgh metropolitan area (which show no more pollution than any major city) is beyond me.
take this study with a grain of salt. Their sampling techniques are cherrypicking and inconsistent, to put it mildly. - anexanhume, on 05/01/2009, -0/+8Someone has to be the worst, no matter how "green" everyone is.
- sodade, on 05/01/2009, -0/+8Zonies go home? Now it is the other way around (or it was before the RE bust). CA people selling their overpriced homes and moving to AZ.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 05/01/2009, -0/+7Several of the CA towns in the list (Fresno, Visalia, Bakersfield, Hanford) are basically just sitting in a big bowl. There's very little air flow, very little rain, lots of cars, and lots of dusty farmland. So everything just collects in the air there and turns brown.
- grungefan, on 05/01/2009, -0/+7Because LA doesn't import goods from other places?
- rson, on 05/01/2009, -2/+8I live in Pittsburgh. trust me, it's inaccurate
- DankBuddz, on 05/01/2009, -0/+6Yeah you're right, China's smog travels directly to SoCal...
I wouldn't mind a citation either. - Dignan666, on 05/01/2009, -1/+7A lot of Cali's air issues are natural. The desert dust mixes with the ocean air to form a lot of the smog. Some of southern california's worst smog days on record were far before California became so populous.
- sodade, on 05/01/2009, -0/+6yes it is.
- skipdog172, on 05/01/2009, -2/+7YEAH U STUPID ARIZONA FGTS, ONLY I DESERVE TO LIVE HERE! WHY? BECAUSE I WAS HERE FIRST, ERM MY PARENTS WERE HERE FIRST!! YEAH!!!
- Terducken, on 05/01/2009, -0/+5It may have been accurate in the seventies, but not now.
You must be old... - nmoulana, on 05/01/2009, -1/+6Because of the rotting corpses in the bathtub? I'm telling.
- daimposter, on 05/01/2009, -0/+5don't try to use logic with divinediva. it won't work.
- Forlack, on 05/01/2009, -1/+5I have lived in Bakersfield my whole life and the article is accurate. Most of the smog comes over the mountains from LA and gets stuck in the valley. It's not too bad, but it makes allergies worse as well as I am sure numerous other things. Just another reason for people to use Bakersfield as "armpit of California" joke. (its really not that bad of a place)
- JCEEZ, on 05/01/2009, -0/+3Bakersfield blows. It's that crap town on the drive up to San Fran. I stopped there once for lunch, cus I couldn't make it to Harris Ranch.
I'm sure non-Cali people are like...wtf. - riddlemod, on 05/01/2009, -1/+4I agree. ***** burned out trannies...
- crcurran, on 05/01/2009, -1/+4In other news; a marked rise in the number of Mexican restaurants in Bakersfield in the past year.
Mmmm beans. - ChiBull23, on 05/01/2009, -2/+5Lois: I guarantee you a man made that commercial.
Peter: Of course a man made it. It's a commercial Lois, not a delicious thanksgiving dinner. - sudhu, on 05/01/2009, -0/+3Pulled from own ass -- does that work?
- Minxiloni, on 05/01/2009, -0/+3I live in Bakersfield, and yes, the air is horrible. From what I heard, the air isn't from LA or trucks, but from the agriculture to the north that stirs up dust when they cultivate and it all gets sent down here and stuck because of the mountains, as well as pesticides and *****. So many people here have asthma or "Vally Fever," our own brand of breathing problems.
- askjeffro, on 05/01/2009, -0/+3You could stop buying Chinese goods.
Yes, its true. You really can act locally and affect globally... - billessig, on 05/01/2009, -0/+3I'm from Oregon and people here complain about the Californians moving north to Oregon. Ironic.
- ekwenox9, on 05/01/2009, -0/+2naaahh its gotta be New Jersey...as a whole
- athinnes, on 10/01/2009, -0/+2Go Cincinnati! My hometown. Pretty funny how the only "lists" it makes are the bad ones. This is probably the only list Cincinnati makes that includes LA.
- xsecretfiles, on 05/01/2009, -2/+4You call that pollution? Wait until you go to china
http://i.treehugger.com/images/2007/5/24/china-pol ... - OdinThor, on 05/01/2009, -0/+2Talk about judging a book by its cover. The Christian Science Monitor is one of the better newspapers in the United States (I know that isn't saying too much). Despite the name of the newspaper, it is NOT religious themed.
Also, why would you judge a news source based on comments that somebody who isn't even affiliated with the newspaper wrote? Would you judge a clip on Comedy Central based on the merits of humor in the clip or based on a stupid comment that somebody added? - jordantneff, on 05/01/2009, -0/+2I've lived in Pittsburgh all my life, and I've visited a lot of cities and there's no reason Pittsburgh should be #2. The air here is clean as most other cities this size, maybe even cleaner. The pictures of Pittsburgh with hundreds of smokestacks and pollution is really old, it's not like that anymore at all. Dare I say the air is actually pretty nice.
- executorzz, on 05/01/2009, -0/+2http://www.nytimes.com/2006/06/11/business/worldbu ...
- enchanterku, on 05/01/2009, -0/+2Try living in Flint, MI
- norman619, on 05/01/2009, -1/+3It's the geography and lack of regular rain thak helps give large Southern California cities that haze. Cities like New York City, and Chicago which are in high rainfall areas have deceptively clearer skies. The regular rain cleans the air.
- Terducken, on 05/01/2009, -1/+3It was accurate in the seventies, but not now.
You must be old... - smacksaw, on 05/02/2009, -0/+1There's too many people in California, Arizona and Nevada. The environment can't support that many people.
If it were up to me, everyone born after 1984 that lives in California would have to pay triple the state income and property taxes. - JCEEZ, on 05/01/2009, -0/+1I think it has more to do with this:
http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/env_pol_car_dio_ ... - smacksaw, on 05/02/2009, -0/+1I know, isn't that funny?
- JamesWyatt, on 05/01/2009, -0/+1My Hometown!! how cool, uh sad...
- Zomgondo, on 05/01/2009, -0/+1The best part is that you get all the losers who can't hack it here in California... we get rid of them, you think all Californians are like them and swear to yourself that you'll never move here. It's a huge win for us :)
- nmezib, on 05/01/2009, -0/+1haha that's a great picture (the fountain was colored pink for breast cancer awareness stuffs)
well, it's a good picture when pittsburgh isn't all grey and cloudy 90% of the year... and that's all due to ***** weather and not pollution. - smacksaw, on 05/02/2009, -0/+1That's why I said to take them to San Pedro.
Logistics. Import/export.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Pedro,_Los_Angele ...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_of_Los_Angeles
It would be the excuse to really upgrade the place and expand it. - smacksaw, on 05/02/2009, -0/+1No, the reason California WAS enjoyable is because when they did things like build the 405 freeway, trucks had to use I-5 instead.
Even before the state was crowded, trucks were a problem. - ryan850, on 05/01/2009, -0/+1I was expecting Houston. I only recommend breathing in Houston if you have to.
- kingofinternet, on 05/01/2009, -0/+1Thanks for the articles, I've read the NY Times one before.
It's still very inaccurate to say that most of the pollution has a foreign source. - nmezib, on 05/01/2009, -1/+2me too. I live in pittsburgh. It's inaccurate. the weather here is no worse than any other major metropolitan area. MUCH better than LA.
- frequentFlyer, on 05/01/2009, -0/+1They forgot to mention that california has the highest percentage of asthmatic and respiratory disease affected children. AKA a horrible place to raise kids unless you live directly on the beach.
Oh, and let's not forget that wonderful Valley Fever that blows in off of the Mojave every couple of years. - holysin, on 05/01/2009, -0/+1Blah, mistakenly dugg this article apparently one can no longer un-digg. Anyways, it's inaccurate, if only because there are *24* cities listed in the top 10. yes, some of the cities listed together are close, but others are more than 20 miles away, for example, Flint is ~40 miles as the crow flies from detroit (Or driving wise, 70ish)
- smacksaw, on 05/02/2009, -0/+1California is a lot of old money, especially because of Prop 13. A lot of these people aren't actually native Californians.
I remember when being a native Californian meant something. - Terducken, on 05/01/2009, -0/+1Ha, I didn't realize that Pittsburgh had a giant Penis at the river confluence.
BTW, sorry for the double post above. I know, I suck... - executorzz, on 05/01/2009, -1/+2http://www.nytimes.com/2006/06/11/business/worldbu ...
