- h3lx, on 09/15/2008, -1/+48...it's a safe bet the chicken isn't going to make it.

- TheInimitable, on 09/15/2008, -2/+36Anyone else kinda freaked out by that incredibly steep road in #7?

- aereaus, on 09/15/2008, -2/+15Man I feel for all those people down there. What a mess.
- ayeroxor, on 09/15/2008, -0/+13We call those "bridges" in these here parts...
- Miamisun, on 09/15/2008, -0/+11Wow...I hope to see more pictures like these show up so people realize how real this storm was. It is no where on the front page of my local newspaper website. I did not realize it was this bad.
- zombies187, on 09/15/2008, -3/+12Digg, I know you guys don't like helping people you deem unworthy, but please be supportive while these people sort their lives out. They have just gone through something they couldn't imagine. Their only real failure was optimism. Help out those in need. Welcome evacuees to your community. Donate to a worthy charity. The next cheek turned could be toward YOU.
- levelred, on 09/15/2008, -2/+11Wow, the worst is having a fire during all this, to make sure everything is destroyed. SAD
- handler, on 09/15/2008, -0/+9Idiot.
- thedogfatherx, on 09/15/2008, -2/+11Very good pictures. The alligator looks like it's having a blast.
- yngtimmy, on 09/15/2008, -0/+8Congrats on the 98%. But your still a moron.
- BitKid, on 09/15/2008, -0/+8That pic of the resurfaced caskets is freaky.

- Miamisun, on 09/15/2008, -0/+7Start of June to End of November.
- Dgen_X, on 09/15/2008, -0/+7boston.com is great with organizing and describing photos, with the big plus being that they're always on the same page.
- ayeroxor, on 09/15/2008, -0/+5"thanks Big Picture for remember"
Darmok and Jalad at Tenagra. Temba, his arms wide. - Malevolant, on 09/15/2008, -0/+5I used to live in Galveston and went through a few hurricanes there. A decent rainfall would flood many areas, so having a hurricane hit drowns the island. After the last tropical storm the seawall was littered with dead, drowned pets, and strays...all bloated from the water. It is always sad to see such things. My dad still lives in Galveston and he was texting me throughout it's landfall. It was actually the best reason I have ever seen to use texting. He wasn't but a block behind where Geraldo and his palm tree were at. He has now left the island until basic infrastructure is re-established. Galveston is a great place, has the second biggest Mardi Gras next to New Orleans, and will need tourists money to help rebuild it so get down there and support them when they are ready for it. They will be very appreciative for your support.
- kiiwii, on 09/15/2008, -1/+6Wow... that picture with just the one house left standing is amazing.
- gametavern, on 09/15/2008, -2/+7ahhh... floating caskets... *shudders*
- braditude101, on 09/15/2008, -0/+5I live in Fayetteville, AR, Ike went right over us, but it didn't cause near as much damage as shown here...It's hard to imagine how those cities in Texas will get back on their feet, lets hope they don't have to suffer anything like this again.
- TBombadil, on 09/15/2008, -7/+12every year.......... yet people still act shocked.
- mobbo, on 09/15/2008, -0/+5Not really. It's the media that SAYS people are shocked.
My family is in Houston and they took the necessary steps to prepare 5 days before the storm arrived. They filled up the bathtubs with water the night before, filled up more buckets with water, filled up the cars with gas, stocked up reasonably on food, taped up the windows, and took pictures of the cars and house (for insurance).
The issue is that, no matter how much warning people will get, there will always be a few THOUSAND people who don't do jack ***** to prepare. In a city with millions of people, of course a few thousand people will suffer from sheer stupidity and lack of preparation. But the people who did prepare and are doing just fine (like my parents) are not on the streets crying about it for the cameras to capture and exploit.
I'm from Houston. I know the people. A VAST MAJORITY are not the kind of people that put out a hand for government help, but there are still a few... remember Houston took in hundreds of thousands of Katrina evacuees who are still there living on FEMA's dime three years after the fact.
Houston will recover quickly. It's the areas that were on the east side of the storm's eye near the TX/LA border that will suffer for quite some time. But again, those people are resilient and used to storms (Rita hit the same spot three years ago) and I don't think you'll see too many asking for that much government assistance. - microdude431, on 09/15/2008, -4/+9Too bad the media doesn't show pictures like this. I think a lot of Americans don't know how bad IKE really was. Thanks for the pics.
- badmonkey6186, on 09/15/2008, -0/+4If you got "raped," then I don't think they have a term for what happened down south.
- TheJoshAustin, on 09/15/2008, -2/+6I was totally thinking the same thing!!! That thing looks like a roller coaster from my nightmares. Now it is just a ramp to jump in the pool with!
- xptoast, on 09/15/2008, -0/+4You really just pulled numbers to figure out how that would work? You must be incredibly bored.
- BigCalhoun, on 09/15/2008, -0/+4I think the shocking part was that it was a cat 2 and caused as much damage as it did. We were expecting it to land as a cat 4. After seeing those pictures, I couldn't imagine the devestation it would have caused.
- Rendonsmug, on 09/15/2008, -0/+4After getting caught out on I-35W for 8 hours while hurricane Rita just misses you might make you think twice about jumping in your car at the slight mention of Ike.
- HallenbeckJoe, on 09/15/2008, -0/+4I just love boston.com for their "The Big Picture" section. Thanks for the pick of amazing pictures!
- junkneo, on 09/16/2008, -0/+3New challenges, builds strength.

- mannymix03, on 09/15/2008, -0/+2Just remember that this was only a high category 2 storm, Imagine how bad it could have been if it stayed on track for Florida as a category 4-5
- removesstains, on 09/15/2008, -3/+5Insert "Aw Nuts!" underneath most of them and it doesn't seem as bad.
- LogicBomB, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2Dgen_X wins today's reiteration prize!
