- satyarth, on 06/30/2009, -2/+18In addition to methane releases, ice reflects more sunlight than water. Water just absorbs most of the heat. Therefore Less ice increases the rate of melting ice.
- Hrodrik, on 06/30/2009, -6/+21"No no, global warming doesn't exist, blabla, Al gore, more uninformed blabla...

It won't change the truth. - dissolutionman, on 06/30/2009, -3/+15Wrong. Whether or not you think climate change is man-made, this is a potentially serious problem.
- IgorUnchained, on 06/30/2009, -1/+11Scientific American? Must be some conspiracy rag.
Hold on while I put on my tinfoil hat.
/s - seltaeb4, on 06/30/2009, -4/+13In before right-wing, flat-earth, know-nothings storm this article and deride it... oh, wait.
- NosceTeIpsum, on 06/30/2009, -2/+10Easy there, you're probably going to piss people off with sound logic like that.
- anonymous1986, on 06/30/2009, -2/+9You sir are an idiot. Read up the following terms: Weather, Climate and Average.
Wilfully stupid springs to mind. - theeEqualizer, on 06/30/2009, -3/+8Well Pawns, I'm sure a tremendous amount of methane comes out of your ass. Out of your mouth, even. But no. I don't believe that the flatulence of 6 billion + people a day can match the volume of methane they're referring to in this article. As is so often the case, Global Warming doubters can't wrap their little minds around any of the science involved. Then some of them go so far as to memorize the "data" of sham science that was paid by vested interest to argue that what industry does isn't only close to harmless, but global warming is mostly hyperbole.
So, why would scientists who are telling us that Global Warming is real, work so hard to support a lie? For government grants? You think? Because that's also really stupid. Do you understand how broad science is? How many billions of directions study could take? So, why would you lie to get a government grant for research, when you could have gotten the same grant by telling the truth? Such studies on GW don't get you much notoriety anymore. The entire science community is proclaiming the same thing from every angle imaginable. So you'd hardly stand out in the crowd...
Hey, Wait! Is that what YOU'RE trying to do??? Awww... how cute! OK... go ahead and tell us about your farts again. Sorry to interrupt. - anonymous1986, on 06/30/2009, -4/+8Being tired of these articles doesn't make the reality of the situation go away.
- bugsy187, on 06/30/2009, -2/+6The words "willfully ignorant" come to mind.
- Hrodrik, on 06/30/2009, -2/+6That is not the point. The point is that governments have started too late in investing in greener alternatives, mostly because voters made the wrong choices (Imagine if Gore had been there instead of Bush) because they were either uninformed or misinformed. There is something about the heart of the conservative person that does not allow them to grasp the fact that their actions or inaction can affect the future of all.
The reign of ignorance has ended. Too late, but it has ended. - anonymous1986, on 06/30/2009, -2/+6Reading... it's a wonderful way to learn stuff.
See:

Quote:
"It is certainly too late to stop all climate change. It is already under way, much in line with model predictions. And there are dangerous time lags. There are already several decades of warming in the pipeline. The lags in organising effective initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are also long.
But climate change is not an on-off switch. It is a continuing process. The sooner we stabilise atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases, the sooner we can reduce our impact on the climate and minimise the risk of reaching tipping points that will make preventing further warming even harder. Even if we only manage to slow warming rather than prevent it, societies will have more time to adjust to the changes." - freedomischaos, on 06/30/2009, -1/+5Your right, I'm sorry that Henry Ford didn't make a super efficient "green" gas powered engine. I'm sorry that the railroad company didn't figure out how to make a better steam powered engine. Because I'm sure that every scientist back then knew the effects we were about to put on the Earth.
I have no reign of ignorance nor am I a conservative; merely I am pointing out the obvious that no one wishes to speak about. As well, it, unfortunately, hasn't ended. There is very little being done due to the amount of red tape, and I don't exactly see it being rushed in the countries that it matters the most in.
Personally, I don't wish to imagine if Gore had been president, nor did I like Bush. However, we got what we choose and we are now stuck with it. Move on and quit beating a dead horse and find a solution or else we'll all be dead regardless of who is president. - CressCrowbits, on 06/30/2009, -1/+4Hey! You aren't legendary british actor David Niven!
I say YOU are the fraud! - bjornski, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3Yeah, what kind of crap is this "Scientific American"?
If it doesn't come from World Nut Daily, it's crap!
/s for the pathetically stupid. - bubgz, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3"Move on and quit beating a dead horse..."
Hey, it's apathy! Better than partisan rhetoric but still somehow worse than accidentally sitting on my balls. Nowhere near as good as sitting on my balls on purpose. - Swivelstick, on 06/30/2009, -3/+5mmm and the melting ice has the possibility of changing ocean currents which in turn could create an ice age. Still trying to work out what your sound logic is Joshua. Have been many catalysts in the history of the Earth. Human population and resource use has/will/is one of them going by logic??
- Hrodrik, on 06/30/2009, -2/+4Funny thing is, Pawn, they have given proof already. But you all fail to accept it as such.
- ichbinladen, on 06/30/2009, -7/+9There has been a recent surge of right wing nuts on Digg... Did freerepublic crash or something?
In response to the story, that's some scary stuff, but what can we do? Not a lot, except to learn from our mistakes. - freedomischaos, on 06/30/2009, -1/+3so make more ice, gotcha
- tacogir, on 06/30/2009, -3/+5I don't know what's worse, the prospect that our planet might be boned beyond recovery (or very close to it) or the fact that right wingers have discovered Digg and bury things that don't agree with the world as Fox News says it is.
I can't wait to see this get burried with claims of "Fair and Balanced." - Hrodrik, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2Pawn, I haven't jumped into any "bandwagon" as you all like to call it. I haven't even seen Al Gore's movie. I have informed myself long before it was normal to talk about global warming. I am a biologist and I am glad to have my own point of view.
Maybe you should get your own. As for the proof, it's all around you. - MacParrot, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2The best part about sitting on your balls is that it feels so good when you stop.
- freedomischaos, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2You're*
- MacParrot, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2Margaritas on me! No seriously, I have enough! Stop throwing Margaritas on me!
- MacParrot, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2Many frozen drinks will be required!
- freedomischaos, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2@MacParrot: absolutely!
- PawnsOfJoshua, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1Hrodrik I think you don't understand what it means to prove something. Geometry class should have given you an understanding of proof. All that has ever been provided is speculative evidence that can just as simply be explained by alternate hypotheses.
Can you describe any logic model that you think proves that man is causing climate change? If you can I will jump on the green bandwagon with reckless abandon. But you cannot because we don't even know all of the dynamics involved in our climate system, so to say that we can conclusively speculate as to the causality of the system or to go as far as to claim that you can "prove" it is ludicrous and absurd.
I know that its hard to jump off the pied piper bandwagon now that you've bitten into it with such glut but really man posts like that just make it apparent how little credibility you actually have. - blogger43, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1The problem with that sentence is that it is NOT too late to slow or stop climate change. This is how we got into the problem in the first place. Too many people consuming now and worrying never.
We may be in a period of global warming with a continuously rising average temperature, or it may be cyclic and we may be peaking. I would rather error on trying to mitigate and eliminate the impacts we are having on the global condition and find out that it is cyclic than to have my head buried in the sand and hope that it goes away. - freedomischaos, on 06/30/2009, -1/+2Thanks for the link.
- iRFNA, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1Another thing to note about the methane hydrates is that disruptions in the pressure that maintains their current stable state will result in the methane being released as a gas. As the gas is released, this further changes the pressure of the surrounding ice/water, causing even more methane to be released as a gas, resulting in an escalating chain reaction. There's also the potential for methane gas to be dissolved in the surrounding water of the methane hydrates without decaying due to lack of oxidation in areas that are stagnant, causing a large build-up of methane that would have otherwise entered the atmosphere and slowly been destroyed. This easily could occur for thousands of years without losing any of the methane gas. The situation is potentially more dangerous than this article says.

- blogger43, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1Hrodrik - The reign of ignorance is till present. As long as environmental concerns are political, and not moral, politics will win over the environment.

won't change "the truth" either. - inactive, on 06/30/2009, -1/+2Buried for taking up too much space. You really think people are going to look at all (if any) of those links?
- MacParrot, on 06/30/2009, -2/+3The planet isn't boned. The planet will do just fine. WE however may have some problems. What makes you think the planet gives a damn one way or another if we're here or not? Arrogance, thy name is politics.
- tacogir, on 07/06/2009, -0/+1It's not that my views are being challenged, its that they're being challenged by Fox-Brainwashed cattle who can't think for themselves. I have formulated my views by information from several sources; I don't rely on one obscenely biased source for all my information and violently disagree with anyone who contradicts it. If there is a valid point to be made and it clearly contradicts mine in a logical way, then I won't insult the person who brings it up nor their source or political views (if even applicable.) If they can provide more information on their claim it's very possible I'll concede. But it has been my previous experience that people who watch Fox New believe everything that their God-endorsed channel spews, no matter how much actual evidence there is to the contrary, and will insult not only anyone who disagrees with them, but somehow turn what you said into a pro-Obama comment and engage in a rant about how Obama is destroying the nation. Until I see this trend stop, my opinion of Fox News will remain the same.
- PawnsOfJoshua, on 06/30/2009, -1/+1Ahem populace.
- MacParrot, on 06/30/2009, -2/+2So what happened to Bob??? I gotta know man!
- MacParrot, on 06/30/2009, -1/+1I KNEW it! That's JUST what Bob deserves for screwing with wasps!
(never did trust that guy) - inactive, on 06/30/2009, -3/+3Why do these articles always start out like they're novels? "It was a cold winter's morning. Bob stepped out of his front door, gingerly avoiding the dead squirrel on his door step. The squirrel stared up at him with lifeless eyes. Bob shuddered and continued on down the path to his car. He opened the door and got in, stuck his keys into the ignition. The engine coughed as he turned the key, bringing the car to life. Bob looked one last time at the dead squirrel, hoping that it wasn't an omen for him. Oh, and by the way, we're all ***** because of global warming".
OK, it's a poor attempt but seriously, do these articles need to be so wordy? Most people don't have the time to read this faff. If we're up ***** creek don't wrap it in Chrismas paper, just give it to us straight. - seltaeb4, on 06/30/2009, -1/+1*populace
- MacParrot, on 06/30/2009, -2/+2What if I insulate my Prius???
- ismhmr, on 06/30/2009, -2/+1Its not "Not Many Scientist," Global Warming is about a Carbon Tax. Its political. period.
- MacParrot, on 06/30/2009, -2/+1You didn't interrupt because you didn't use the "Reply" link which would have placed your comment within Pawns making it much easier to follow. Learn how to do that before ranting over how stupid someone is.
- inactive, on 06/30/2009, -2/+1He went to work and had a distinctly average day. Turns out the squirrel had a nut allergy so Bob's fears were unjustified - although Bob died a week later from an horrific wasp sting on his scrotum.
