- ChromaVita, on 10/12/2007, -1/+74I feel so bad for that turtle...
- nymphetamine, on 10/10/2007, -7/+79Why isn't Mewtwo on that list? He's pretty rare.
- socialpyramid, on 11/12/2007, -9/+45Human beings are currently causing the greatest mass extinction of species since the extinction of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. If present trends
continue one half of all species of life on earth will be extinct in less than 100 years, as a result of habitat destruction, pollution, invasive species,
and climate change. http://www.well.com/user/davidu/extinction.html
Tragic. And scary. - scallon, on 10/10/2007, -5/+34I dont think darwin factored in pickup trucks and rabbit traps when he came up with his theory.
- Treshnell, on 10/10/2007, -1/+25Just get DNA samples and we can recreate them later down the road.
- Trax91, on 10/10/2007, -1/+23Damn, he can't get laid at all.
- staticblake, on 10/10/2007, -8/+25Meh, I only eat about 30 different species of animal. As long as those are around I'm happy.
/prepares for the digg down from the vegetarian/vegan crowd and those without a working sense of humor. - MOJIRA, on 05/17/2008, -2/+17I think the adult Pokemon fan should be on the list too.
- cr1t, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13poor George
- davidrools, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14he's on digg?
- MOJIRA, on 05/17/2008, -0/+13Yes we'll put them in "Cenozoic Park" and a little Scottish man with white hair and a cane will spare no expense on it. It needs some work, but it's a solid plan.
- spudnic, on 10/10/2007, -4/+16Why not? I always wonder why people don't consider humans part of the evolutionary process, we evolved in a way that has lead us to this, what if a species of bear was found that cleared forests?
- ayeroxor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12"a constant reminder for vigilence"
The 11th rarest animal is the Great Spotted Spellchecker... - hobbes252, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Is anyone else surprised that a type of rabbit (number 6) is on an endangered species list?
- Kamill85, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Yeah, but these animals eat other animals/plants or their products, and those wont be around. Ecosystem is a very complicated, well evolved machine, which is being corrupted by us on daily basis.
- cambob76, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Nice marmot!
- shortcircuit13, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Nope, they found it again. It's just "almost extinct" now.
- LastSight, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10The Rino is the coolest one of the lot
- scallon, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10That is a wonderful combination of being very philosophical while simultaneously very naive.
- MOJIRA, on 05/17/2008, -0/+8So if the population is up now, she was quite a little whore wasn't she?
- JohnnyXmas, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7The Iberian Lynx is by far the most beautiful and graceful of all cats, wild or domesticated. The world will truly be a less wonderful place once this great animal is lost.
- Syntaxis, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10Humans are animals, therefore part of nature. Us killing off animals is part of nature, therefore natural selection. We are stronger than they are, we developed a need for them being dead, they are not evolved enough to successfully defend themselves: they lose. We then proceed to "preserve" these species simply because, if they are gone, we can't have what they deliver. We breed them, kill them, use them.
If you think that's sad, praise whatever god you believe in that you weren't born 2000 years ago. That must've been like hell. Or niflheim. Or limbo. Or whatever bad afterlife your particular god supposedly created to punish you.
As long as cows and pigs don't end up in that top-10 list, I'm all fine. - spambutcher, on 10/10/2007, -11/+17amazingly - not only are these animals the 10 rarest, but they're also the 10 animals best served rare.
- esumner, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Wot! No Kakapo?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kakapo - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8I hope that page is one of the ones banned in china.it probably looks like a shopping list.
- Kamill85, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6You're confusing natural selection with human stupidity.
- ihaveplans, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8No one will cry when adult Pokeman fans go extinct.
- MrSidnet, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Dugg for article being on One Page!
- davidrools, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7beef don't need dolphins.
- johnboyholmes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Where is the Black Robin:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Robin
It's population was down to 1 female and a few males in the 80's - Scruffydan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6he is right... but thats no reason to trash the planet we live on.
- themastersb, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I'd like to taste one of those river dolphins before they're all gone.
- benitojuarez, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4nice list, theres actually 11, there are two number 8's
- Eronamanthius, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I find it funny that there's an organization raising money just to get a turtle laid.
- benitojuarez, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Bith
- melonhedd, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6LOL BECAUSE RABBITS LIKE TO HAVE SEX
- MOJIRA, on 05/17/2008, -0/+3We can make more as long as we have male lions and female tigers.
- variable, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Not one of them looks particularly appetizing.
- brjndr, on 10/10/2007, -1/+430?? I've had Cow, Pig, Chicken, Turkey, Duck, Lamb, Goat, Buffalo...
There are probably some more, but what other delicious animals am I being deprived of!?!!? - davidrools, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3there are over 100 million red pandas on PCs around the world
- TwoDeuces, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7Please prove this. And in retort I will offer up this: Ice cores and soil cores from around the globe show a very similar history of earths climate. It's been a LOT hotter and a LOT colder throughout geologic history and the majority of species find a way to keep on keepin on.
I've read a lot of articles and one sticks in my craw pretty hard. It talks about polar bears in the arctic circle losing hunting grounds because of a loss of pack ice to hunt on. Do you expect me to believe that without ice polar bears will just say "Oh ***** man, no more ice, I'm just going to pack it in and quit, I'm all done. Too bad I didn't contribute to my 401K all these years...". - shortcircuit13, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3"We might take out a few species during our time, but our time is just a blink of a relative blink of an eye."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holocene_extinction_e ...
Oh yes, just a few. That must be why it's called an extinction level event.
The fact that we've only been here for a relative eyeblink simply means that we're that much better at causing extinctions. Go us. - philomatic, on 02/08/2009, -0/+3You should help him out then...
- mahdaeng, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Yeah, yeah, yeah...
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3the turtle reminds me of the ET game for the 2600. stretching your neck to get out of the ***** holes & such...
*****. - INTERNETMASTER, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3that Pinta Island tortoise is really cool!
- Scynet, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4He didnt have to factor them in, it's completely irrelevant. Natural selection, the event where species that can adapt best to their surroundings will thrive while the opposite dies, happens naturally. Species that aren't compatible with humans will compete with us, and the more powerful wins.
- TsuruchiBrian, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Surely many new species will also be created from the dramatically changing environment selecting for different evolutionary traits. It's only fair to count the net gain/loss of species when deciding if humans are good or bad for bio-diversity.
- troyfoley, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2In the picture he even looks like he's looking for another tortoise...
