- jmpeagle, on 12/30/2007, -15/+117I heard they flew south for the winter
- Dreamscar, on 12/30/2007, -8/+90Some guy on a streetcar in Toronto told me that there would be an increase in the amount of birds leading up to the apocalypse, because according to him, god deemed them necessary to eat the piling dead bodies.
Looks like we're safe for awhile - DeviantDragon, on 12/30/2007, -11/+87David Blaine, you DEMON! Put those birds back! You put those birds right back! DEMON!
- BrianCrosbie, on 12/30/2007, -1/+76Man, Canadian news is such better quality than American news. Straight up.
- joeyjesus, on 12/30/2007, -7/+62the canary is no longer in the coal mine. very sad.
- rolf, on 12/30/2007, -1/+47With the reduction of bees across America that has been reported the last year -- this troubles me deeply.
- inactive, on 12/30/2007, -2/+45In California, it's partly West Nile virus killing off birds. A lot of them.
As for bees, we still don't know for sure. But there are a lot of bee deaths going on and it affects crop pollination. There's also a mysterious disease that rots politician's brains. Seems to be incurable and widespread in both parties. And whatever is in chemtrails doesn't seem to be good for animals or people either. - smacksaw, on 12/30/2007, -2/+34Damn. And I just finished my Ornithology degree.
- inactive, on 12/30/2007, -3/+28Remarkably, the vast majority of people up here appear to be ... disinterested? detached? aloof? cynical? emotionally frozen? I would expect to see this response in heavily sedated psychiatric patients.
- shreela, on 12/30/2007, -1/+25Other than destroying their habitat and using pesticides on crops, I suspect pollution from generating power has at least something to do with the birds (and bees) disappearances. I don't understand why some bird lovers get so upset about wind farms; sure some birds will die if they fly into a windmill, but it seems many, many more would die from the pollution generated by traditional power generation (gas, coal). Of course more solar would probably help, as would growing organic crops, and tighter regulation on factories dumping toxins into the lakes, rivers, and oceans.
Dead canaries in mines used to be taken seriously. - tehxen3, on 12/30/2007, -3/+23George Bush doesn't care about birds.
- Eldorian, on 12/30/2007, -0/+20No, we'd have a shortage of lawyers instead.
- speccy, on 12/30/2007, -4/+21Has Dick Cheney been out hunting again?
- inactive, on 12/30/2007, -0/+17I've noticed virtually NO sparrows or grackles... very common birds... here in Kansas this year. This isn't fake or exaggerated. It's just plain freaky.
- colonelbuckshot, on 12/30/2007, -0/+15Lesson from history:
"The passenger pigeon was a species of pigeon that was once the most common bird in North America. It is estimated that there were as many as five billion passenger pigeons in the United States at the time Europeans colonized North America. They lived in enormous flocks, and during migration, it was possible to see flocks of them a mile wide and 300 miles long, taking several days to pass and containing up to a billion birds. During the 19th century, the species went from being one of the most abundant birds in the world to extinction."

- HalfGiraffe, on 12/30/2007, -0/+15I've never seen as many moronic and feeble comments as this story has generated. I wonder if this reflects how powerless people feel about the issue.
- Jholder112233, on 12/30/2007, -2/+16What the F!?
- chkdg8, on 12/30/2007, -10/+23Chemtrails and HAARP is ***** everything up. Google is your red pill.
- BlackPawn, on 12/30/2007, -3/+15umm... So long, and thanks for all the insects?
- slimnickyy, on 12/30/2007, -5/+15That same guy later pissed all over himself in a drunken binge.
- spyd3rweb, on 12/30/2007, -4/+14Fox News is your blue pill.
- playuhh, on 12/30/2007, -5/+15first the bees! now the birds!?! =( i'm moving up out this b*tch!
damn conservatives... you can't just take away the birds and the bees and expect people to never learn about it! - tanside, on 12/30/2007, -8/+17not to mention the dogs with bee's in their mouth's, and when they bark they shoot bee's at you.
- spyd3rweb, on 12/30/2007, -0/+9Its not available in the Matrix, you have to wake up to get it.
- inactive, on 12/30/2007, -30/+38Jews?
- chsbrgr, on 12/30/2007, -3/+11well ... he did choose a bird murderin' VP
- banmaster, on 12/30/2007, -10/+18Don't worry. Global Warming isn't real! Just keep saying that to yourself and you might be able to sleep through the time when humans start vanishing thanks to what we have done to our planet!
- dadioflex, on 12/30/2007, -8/+16Of course they are, we've just gotten past Thanks-Giving and Christmas.
- radiantstorm, on 12/30/2007, -2/+9Actually, this has been substantiated. Do just the tiniest of research. It's there.
- AZTriGuy, on 12/30/2007, -1/+8So long, and thanks for all the birdseed...
- banmaster, on 12/30/2007, -1/+8I was just trying to make a point. We have all these odd occurances that have all happened recently (well most of them).
The only real thing that seems to link them all is the crap we keep doing to the environment. I know, correlation /= causality, but at the very least it should get people thinking a bit more about how we can reduce out footprint on this planet, the only one we have. - OneLess, on 12/30/2007, -0/+6People who get upset over birds dying in wind turbines are ***** nutters anyway. More birds die annually from clean glass windows than wind farms and the rate for wind turbines is something like 1 bird per turbine per year.
- kazamx, on 12/30/2007, -4/+10dam I didn't think anyone saw me :-(
- mrandall, on 12/30/2007, -4/+10I hope it's pigeons.
- spyd3rweb, on 12/30/2007, -4/+10Who needs animals and plants when you can eat a protein goop everyday.
- YogiWanKenobi, on 12/30/2007, -2/+8Chemtrails and HAARP only seem to affect hypochondriacs
- SupaFurry, on 01/23/2008, -0/+6Don't you think perhaphs, just maaayyyyybe, they took that into consideration?
- kazamx, on 12/30/2007, -2/+8LOL, that covers it then, dam you fat Americans and your turkey murdering day.
- jjmckay, on 12/30/2007, -0/+5No it reflects how uninformed Diggers are as to the causes. I don't think there is one single causes but many causes. They do bird migratory surveys every fall along Allegheny Front at Dolly Sods, WV every year. They've noticed a decline but even they are hesitant to cite any one cause, as far as I know.
- RedViper1999, on 12/30/2007, -1/+6Apparently Davarama is the only person here with a brain. Cats are responsible for the deaths of 200 million birds a year. This leads to all sorts of bird extinction and stories like this chemical one just take away from what is really happening. Cats need to be kept indoors and if found outside need to be eliminated. They are today's biggest ecological problem regarding birds.
- appleann1, on 12/31/2007, -0/+5In 2004 you people almost elected a bird murdering president.
- paganmonkeyboy, on 12/30/2007, -0/+5Does this mean we can expect a boom in the insect population, and associated diseases ?
- bowens44, on 12/30/2007, -0/+4I am always surprised when I see so much apathy here on digg. Most of the comments are snide , juvenile remarks.
Bush has said many times that 'they hate us for our freedom' this is more evidence that that isn't true. They hate us because we're *****. - Killian14, on 12/30/2007, -3/+7I bet it feels good to tell yourself you understood something that most others wouldn't. Problem is it really wasn't that witty. It requires you to know little other than what Canary's are used for in coal mines, something that most people know. I'm thinking you said that more for your own ego rather than to make diggers think or compliment JoeyJesus.
- bjornski, on 12/30/2007, -0/+4Yeah, because songbirds make such good dinner.
- bowens44, on 12/30/2007, -0/+4What a sad, uninformed comment.
- tehxen3, on 12/30/2007, -1/+5Chill, it was funny.
- appleann1, on 12/31/2007, -1/+5You couldn't let one submission go by without bring Bush or Cheney into it, could you dave. You have some serious problems buddy.
