- Dexter2012, on 11/25/2008, -0/+2Dear President elect Obama,
T. Boone Pickens has asked you to reduce America’s dependence on foreign oil and “energize” the U.S. Economy by supporting his plan and his grassroots army. This Pickens Plan army continues to grow in size and enthusiasm. I am confident you have already heard of Mr. Pickens' plan; however, at its core is the desire to free our great nation from the bondage of foreign oil. In short, to accomplish this goal Mr. Pickens (and his LIKE-MINDED ARMY) want to see the wind, sun, geothermal, and other alternative energies harnessed to power our industry and cities. Accomplishing this will give us the flexibility to shift natural gas away from electricity generation and put it to use as a transportation fuel.
Let there be no doubt, this is a war against the strangle hold foreign oil has over America. For the security of our nation's economy, we must reduce our consumption of foreign oil now. Natural gas is an abundant domestic energy resource, and it can be our automotive transportation fuel today. Natural gas will act as a “bridge” to future sources of alternative transportation energies.
Compressed natural gas (CNG) for our current automobiles is critical. “While it is a cheap, effective and versatile fuel, less than 1% of natural gas is currently used for transportation.”
Today, throughout the world, automobiles are being converted to, and run on, CNG. Yet, in America our access to reliable and affordable CNG conversion kits is almost non-existent. Why, it’s pretty simple. The federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certification for after market CNG conversion kits has caused an overly burdensome, overly restrictive, and incredibly costly approval process for manufactures.
I ask that you take action to support, and introduce, legislation that will create regulatory reform which makes CNG conversion kits accessible and affordable for all of our vehicles - not just a select few!
If you doubt the viability of natural gas (and CNG conversion kits) for transportation use, then listen to just a FEW quotes from our government's own experts!
“Natural gas is a domestically produced alternative fuel and is readily available to end users through the utility infrastructure. It can produce significantly fewer harmful emissions than gasoline or diesel when used in vehicles.” (www.eere.energy.gov/afdc/fuels/natural_gas.html) “Installers can economically and reliably retrofit many light-duty vehicles for natural gas operation.” (www.eere.energy.gov/afdc/vehicles/natural_gas_availability.html) “The increase in the number of vehicles on our roads and the number of miles driven are pushing an ever-increasing demand for oil imports. Highway transportation alone is responsible for more than half the nation’s oil demand. At the same time, worldwide oil reserves, which are often located in volatile countries, leave the United States vulnerable to disruptions in oil supply. The steady increase in vehicles also contributes to degrading air quality in many of our cities and to increasing levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Natural gas vehicles are crucial to the solution.” (www.nrel.gov/docs/fy01osti/29162.pdf)
“Together, we can solve our over-reliance on foreign oil. We can change the future, for the benefit of us all, and that of our children.” (www.PickensPlan.com) - JMTorla, on 12/12/2008, -0/+2President-Elect: I am hopeful that with the remaining choices of cabinet members, specifically Agriculture and Energy, you will select people who will reform and truly change the "status quo" mindset of these agencies. Michael Pollan and T. Boone Pickens have been two of the most rational and revolutionary voices with great approaches to addressing these two important policy areas. I hope that the voice of Agriculture and Energy in the Obama White House will give fair credence to their perspective and policy agendas.
- Barackalypse, on 11/21/2008, -1/+3Why doesn't Obama pledge to end our dependence on foreign loans to pay for our domestic budget deficits instead? He seems to be too busy throwing additional spending at all sorts of special interests instead of tackling the real problem.
- ewedgar, on 11/23/2008, -0/+2At http://www.change.gov/yourvision, I wrote in to share ideas where President-Elect Obama could boldly lead the country.
Dear President-Elect Obama,
I understand that one of your first priorities is energy independence for the United State of America. There are many Americans who have great ideas and vision to reach this goal.
Please read and consider the following ideas from the National Space Society for space based solar power collection and transmission satellites to transmit unlimited energy anywhere on Earth from the safest fusion reactor we have that will last for billions of years, our sun which beams out 386 billion billion megawatts of energy. Of this steady and unfailing outpouring of sunlight, our planet Earth catches less than one part in two billion. There’s plenty of room for improvement! A single space based solar power collection and transmission satellite could deliver five to ten gigawatts to the ground using microwaves from a very large (up to one square kilometer) antenna on the satellite to a much larger one on the ground that would not interfere with other large scale pursuits like industrial agriculture. The total electrical generation capacity of the entire state of California is 4.4 gigawatts. One space based solar power collection and transmission satellite could deliver twice as much electrical power. Space based solar power collection and transmission satellites´ benefits are greater and costs and risks are arguably lower than building terrestrial nuclear and clean coal power plants of which we cannot build enough to meet demand in the long run.

Please read and consider the following ideas from former U.S. Senator and Astronaut Harrison Schmidt´s to mine the Moon for helium-3 to fuel nuclear fusion reactors on Earth. The isotope is extremely rare on Earth but abundant on the Moon. Some experts estimate there a millions of tons in lunar soil -- and that a single Space-Shuttle size load could power the entire United States for a year.

Please read and consider the following ideas from the Alliance for Climate Protection, a nonprofit, nonpartisan effort founded by Nobel laureate and former Vice President Al Gore to repower American with 100% clean electricity within 10 years. Doing so would deliver the affordability, stability and confidence our economy needs, as well as help solve the climate crisis. All it takes is the political will to support national policies that get the most out of the energy we currently produce, rapidly deploy the clean energy technologies we already know can work, create a new smart, integrated grid to deliver power economically from wherever it is generated to wherever people live.

Please read and consider the following ideas from the Pickens´plan that calls for building new wind generation facilities that will produce 20% of our nation's electricity and allow us to use natural gas as a transportation fuel. The combination of these domestic energies can replace more than one-third of our foreign oil imports. And we can do it all in 10 years, building a bridge to to new alternative energy future.

Please read and consider the following ideas from the State of California to encourage the support and development of hydrogen fuel cell technology and the infrastructure to create a hydrogen-based transportation system to start, and others on needed hydrogen electrolysis to provide plentiful hydrogen fuel for vehicles and other uses, that ultimately could lead to a total hydrogen based economy.

Please read and consider the following ideas from the Hopewell Project, a New Jersey Nonprofit Corporation, addressing energy independence, environmental preservation, and economic sustainability. In 2006, the first Solar-Hydrogen residence in North America was completed in Hopewell, New Jersey. The home features an advanced solar-hydrogen system for hydrogen production and storage that is integrated into an existing solar and geothermal system, and provides for all of the home’s energy needs. The system also includes a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle refueling station. The next phase of the solar-hydrogen home project will involve data capture and analysis as well as engineering of key components. By further refining the system for cost, size and efficiency, we hope to have an affordable, turnkey system available to consumers within two years from 2008.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEdQRVQtffw - emoodie, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2Honorable president elect Mr. Barack Obama
You are in my prayers for your job as president of the United States will be a challenging one with many tough decisions to make moving forward.
Please consider the Pickens Plan Website (the website is www.pickensplan.com) as a way to help this country to gain its independance from foriegn oil. I think Mr. Boone Pickens is one of the few people in the United States who even has a hint of a workable plan to rescue this country from its's energy woes.
Independance from foreign oil cannot help but energize this great capitalist system we Americans are so lucky to have. Add to that favorable tax considerations for American businesses and guess what companies will grow, prosper and create new jobs for all Americans.
Remember you only get more of what you reward in life and you do not get more of what you punish. Lets not punish the American corporations and small businesses who are the reason we are so prosperous as a country in the first place.
We are all personally and nationally where we are in life and as a country because of the decisions we make.
Please make decisions that reward the companies that produce the jobs, products and services by allowing them to have the favorable energy, monetary, and tax enviroment they need to succeed.
Sincerely and best wishes
Earnest O. Moodie - mjgila1c, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1We need bipartisan support on this idea, if Obama doesn't like all aspects to the plan he should say what those aspects are and work towards changing it. He is not in office yet so of course he would not be answering these questions yet, but soon he will need to. It's up to all of us to keep the pressure on.
- Bagitagain, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1There is not a shortage of oil. Witness the fact that oil is now around $50 per barrel. $140 oil was a result of greedy speculators having a ball at our expense.
I am a proponent of the Pickens Plan, because eventually we will either run short of resources or global demand will outpace supply. Manufacturing fleets of Federal, State, and Local govt. natural gas powered vehicles is a no-brainer, as far as I am concerned.
Mr. Obama should change his energy policy goal from plug-in electric fleets to natural gas, as the electrics are still unproven.
