Technological Breakthrough In Fight To Cut Greenhouse Gases
sciencedaily.com — Scientists at Newcastle University have pioneered breakthrough technology in the fight to cut greenhouse gases. The Newcastle University team, led by Michael North, Professor of Organic Chemistry, has developed a highly energy-efficient method of converting waste carbon dioxide (CO2) into chemical compounds known as cyclic carbonates.

- badnewshotel, on 04/27/2008, -20/+4Oh, great. Now we can fight something that doesn't even exist. You global warming idiots need to wake up to the lies. You're a bunch of sheep following Al Gore. The result will be higher taxes and less freedom, all in the name of junk science. Get a clue dorks.
- honeymonster, on 04/27/2008, -0/+15"The result will be higher taxes and less freedom" - just to update you, you already have that thanks to Mr Bush and his war on the terror.
- badnewshotel, on 04/27/2008, -14/+1Just to update you - the war on terror is real, not some made up fantasy (like most of you left wing nut jobs think). And, tax revenues in the US are up - while tax rates are down. You're an ignorant pig.
- marx2k, on 04/27/2008, -0/+4I'm pretty glad to know the "war on terror" is real. I was worried to think that the only failed/failing"war on *" that was funneling my money and my rights was the "war on drugs". At least the "War on illiteracy" doesn't take that much of my money. Or maybe it does. How about a "War on Failed Political Wars" that actually puts money back in my pocket and liberties back on my person?
Now THAT would be cool. - senorsubagua, on 04/27/2008, -0/+7Tax rates are not down; they have just been deferred by pumping up our national debt. And democrats don't deny there is a threat from terrorism, just that Bush's "war on terror" has been and continues to be a pack of lies that has made us even more susceptible to attack. So, while we continue to bankrupt ourselves, financially and morally, in Iraq, you can draw whatever comfort you wish from the fact that Bin Laden never dreamed that his little plot would be so effective as to make us consume ourselves. Also, as far as ignorant, you shouldn't throw around terms like "left wing" when you clearly have no idea what it means. Most democrats are centrist.
- badnewshotel, on 04/27/2008, -9/+0That's total *****. Democrats do deny the threat everyday. Are you even listening. What an idiot.
- senorsubagua, on 04/27/2008, -0/+5Right back at ya, pal. I do listen, just not to Fox "news" or discredited shills like krauthammer and kristol. And i don't get my science from writers of fiction like crichton. don't blame us if you can't come to grips with the fact that you backed a proven loser who's ignorance has done real damage to this nation. frankly, the way you like to call people names instead of, you know, actually engaging in meaningful discourse, seems as if you're, well, kind of bitter...
- badnewshotel, on 04/28/2008, -1/+0I'm bitter like your boy Obama says I am. Who gives a ***** about Fox news, I'm talking about real ***** life her nut job. But, as long as weirdos like you feel better about yourself, I guess that's all you care about. You're pitiful. Move to Canada.
- senorsubagua, on 04/28/2008, -0/+0Sure you are, Fred. And just what "real ***** life" are you talking about? Your war on terror has no credibility -- case you haven't heard, Iraq never attacked us -- the hijackers were from Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Egypt, our good friends. Must have made you feel real proud to see Fearless Leader strolling around the garden holding hands with Prince Bandar. You're out of your depth here, pal -- maybe you should go back to playing with your GI Joes and leave the political and social discussion to the adults.
- senorsubagua, on 04/28/2008, -0/+0Actually, not Jordan -- I apologize to the Jordanians -- the other hijackers were from the United Arab Emirates.
- badnewshotel, on 04/28/2008, -0/+0Hey, douche bag, you can try a misdirect with your shiny geography facts, but the truth is that you're wrong and too stupid (or liberal) to admit it. I'm sorry you live in the little world that inhabits your mind, but you're not the smartest guy in the room... sorry to burst your bubble. And, your mom's a whore.

- triskele, on 04/27/2008, -0/+3I'm sorry, but I'd rather be spitting out CO2 than storing up benzene, toluene or some other aromatics in some reservoir in my vehicle. God forbid something happens and you get a leak. Not to mention having to remove these compounds from your vehicle periodically.
I remember there being an issue with the Mercedes Benz BlueTec engine when it came to the states. Some wouldn't and still might not (I'm not sure) allow it because you were periodically required to add more catalyst to maintain listed emissions. I'd guess that the California states if not all would have a problem with this.- Risingashes, on 04/27/2008, -2/+8I agree, putting even the most minimal amount of effort in order to help the planet is far too taxing for me.
In that 5 minutes that I spent changing chemicals or whatsits I could have watched a commercial for deep fried chicken.- triskele, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2If it were something as simple as adding windshield washer fluid you might have a point, but chances are that catalyst/catalytic converter will have to be serviced by mechanics certified in this new technology. If the product of the chemical reaction in question is to be utilized there will have to be an infrastructure developed to handle it, and on the other hand if it's just to be disposed of it's likely going to be just as harmful if not more harmful than CO2. Think next time.
- soulpiercer7, on 04/28/2008, -0/+3this article never talked about cars. It was talking about factories and power plants.

Couple of povo islands will be underwater but I'm sure they'll enjoy the streets of Vegas far more.
All they need to do is get that lab grown chicken pumping and everything will be coming up rosey.
- Risingashes, on 04/27/2008, -1/+1Kind of with you on that. Sydney will be just fine.
- Albumen, on 04/27/2008, -8/+3I am not too worried about global warming or "killing the planet."
First of all, the planet will out-live all of us. The phrase "killing the planet" is hyperbole.
As for humans and our effect on the atmosphere, we are already dying in droves of fairly new diseases or older ones that are making a comback. If we polute the place up enough, we'll kill off enough of ourselves to allow the earth to reverse the process!
So see, don't you worry so much. Sleep peacefully in the knowledge that eventually it will all work out either way. - GunOfSod, on 04/27/2008, -9/+0Could someone please find a new disaster for me to worry about now. TY
- gkiltz, on 04/27/2008, -5/+2It does not take high tech to cut greenhouse gases! Just let your lawn return to it's natural state, and keep only the area immediately around the house that is needed for safety clear of brush! Let everything else grow! You'll be surprised how quick CO2 Levels drop and O2 levels rise!
- d03boy, on 04/27/2008, -7/+1hippy
- mrzack, on 04/27/2008, -3/+1The real threat to environment is not co2, but US governments testing atmospheric atomic weapons. The ozone hole was created by military, not industry pollution. If you truly want to save the endowment, then don't eat big industry meat, eat sparingly organic meat instead. support your local CSA organic farmers.

- h0ser, on 04/27/2008, -2/+1then the Atmos systems will take control of the peoples cars and release deadly gas upon the people. The only person that will be able to save the day is "The Doctor!"
- gibbwake, on 04/27/2008, -6/+2Global warming isnt a problem. Co2 is a life giving gas that plants breath to create more oxygen for us. Itll raise food production as well. The sun is the cause of the warming - Jupiter, Mars, and Pluto are heating up at the same rate as the Earth.
Whats with all of the fear mongering? Its every politicians dream to tax your breathing, and thats exactly what the political solution to this non problem is - carbon tax. You EXHALE Co2. Stop falling for this scam.
If you consider yourselfs true environmentalists, stop the fluoride in the water, stop the genetic engineering of food, stop the cross species chimeras, but dont tax me for ***** breathing.
Here is a good documentary which covers this extensivley. Its a non biased look at global warming, and interviews several of the IPCC scientists that disagree that man is causing global warming. It then looks at the means behind global warming, and what it is being exploited to bring about: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4860344067 ...- soulpiercer7, on 04/28/2008, -1/+3more CO2 in the atmosphere will NOT increase agricultural production. the rising temperatures and increase in drought will LOWER it.
In every publican I've read, I've heard the solar radiation has not been increasing and that it couldn't be responsible for this warming trend.
The way the planet was before, every output of atmospheric carbon was balanced by something (such as plants) removing it. At the rate at which we are releasing carbon into our atmosphere, our planet can not keep up and balance the levels.
It's interesting you bring up the IPCC. if you take a look at the website http://www.ipcc.ch/ you'll see an entire website disagreeing with you.
Go back to your basement, put on your tinfoil hat and continue believing that global climate change is a myth, 9-11 was an inside job, we faked the moon landing and there's aliens being kept at Area 51 and leave the thinking to the rest of us. - amightywind, on 04/28/2008, -1/+1Global warming is not a problem or even phenomenon. It is an industry, invented by eco-liberals because the plight of Polar Bears and Fur Seals no longer evoke sympathy (i.e. financial donations).
- banderwocky, on 04/28/2008, -0/+2from the CIA website;
American Environmental Issues: air pollution resulting in acid rain in both the US and Canada; the US is the largest single emitter of carbon dioxide from the burning of fossil fuels; water pollution from runoff of pesticides and fertilizers; limited natural fresh water resources in much of the western part of the country require careful management; desertification
there are issues for sure. as a species we will have to sort this out.

We Live in a Polluted World - TheMachine1, on 04/28/2008, -0/+0"To satisfy the current market for cyclic carbonates, we estimate that our technology could use up to 18 million tonnes of waste CO2 per year, and a further 30 million tonnes if it is used as an anti-knocking agent."
Yeah too bad 8+ billon tons of CO2 is produced by man yearly.- soulpiercer7, on 04/28/2008, -0/+2it's a start. this is just one technology. it's one more tool in our arsenal.
- amightywind, on 04/28/2008, -3/+1Here in Minnesota we will have a high today of 35 degrees. We had six inches of snow the past weekend. Farmers cannot plant their crops. My dog won't go outside. We may all starve this year. Please do your part and crank up your CO2 output!

Now you say it does exist, but it's not keeping you warm enough in Minnesota, so we should burn more stuff.
I don't see how you can have it both ways. Which is it Mr. Science?
