- megamod, on 11/24/2008, -0/+19so pixelated, orange suit is the result? why couldn't they provide a damn sample...
- UserNull, on 11/25/2008, -0/+13My ***** car last month.
- wristpull, on 11/25/2008, -0/+11Whether you agree with hunting or not, you've got to admit - that we can actually figure this ***** out is pretty nifty.
- diggmeordie, on 11/25/2008, -0/+9Where the ***** are the pictures of the camo?
- Balath, on 11/25/2008, -1/+10After the invention of "guns" other advantages are trivial.
It's like if you're in a car, racing against a guy on foot. You can improve your car as much as you like - turbo, better tires, nitros, but why bother? You're going to win anyway.
I think the reason research like this happens is to gain knowledge about optics. Could benefit us, you never know. The camo is an application of the research - a financial excuse to do it. - WRXFiles, on 11/25/2008, -1/+9Digg up if you support the Right To Arm Bears!
- stonebear, on 11/23/2008, -1/+8Related spectography: http://www.hunter.ru/hunting/how_game_animals_see/ ...
- DP84, on 11/25/2008, -2/+9Great, cheat codes for hunting.
- holzp, on 11/25/2008, -0/+7They were camouflaged as paragraphs. Sneaky New York Times.
- Kyan, on 11/25/2008, -0/+7The deer will wish they'd thought of this first.
- rabidbob, on 11/25/2008, -1/+8Shotguns are used for small game and birds. Rabbits, hares, pheasant, etc. Rifles are used for larger game such as deer, boar, etc. Of course if you are especially insane or ex-special forces (same thing?) you can always go boar hunting with a knife.
- pinchduck, on 11/25/2008, -3/+10Ever hunted? There is no huge guarantee of success. That is why there are always more hunters than dead deer any given hunting season. Yeah, partly that is due to regulation, but part of it is due to the fact that sitting in a blind, waiting for a clear shot, doesn't confer a huge advantage on the hunter.
- ParanoydAndroid, on 11/25/2008, -0/+6In urban areas the sound of rifles going off all damn season would not only be maddening, it would also be potentially dangerous because it can desensitize the populace to the sound of gunfire.
In addition, a top of the line rifle has a range of well over a mile in the right conditions, an arrow has nowhere near that, so it's easier to keep track of your ammo to make sure you don't shoot someone you can't even see.
...Idiot. - MacParrot, on 11/25/2008, -0/+6Hey she gets really nasty, just knock the beer cub's mother off the bar. What's the big deal?
- inactive, on 11/25/2008, -2/+7Good. The deer population in many areas is out of control. Killing by hunting is far more humane than allowing them to starve, and in the process you're feeding people with the meat.
- FastZ, on 11/25/2008, -1/+6That's what I was going to point out as well. If you have never actually been deer hunting before, you really have no idea what you are talking about. Deer hunting takes skill on the hunter's part. You can't simply go sit in the woods with a rifle and come out in a few hours dragging a deer behind you. I wish it were that easy. I think a lot of people see these hunting shows on TV where guys travel from all over the country to these hunting "resorts" that are managed by a company that sells hunting leases for a butt-load of $$$. They make sure that their land has a large number of deer because that's what is funding their paychecks. If the hunter pays a large amount of money to hunt on their land, they are going to make sure that hunter gets a shot at a nice deer. In real life, it is much different. You have to depend on luck, skill, and most of all, patience in order to have an opportunity to shoot a nice buck during deer season.
- FastZ, on 11/25/2008, -0/+5They already make that stuff. Scent-Away shampoo and soap and garments that don't make noise when you wear them. Also charcoal impregnated clothing can be used to keep body scent from leaving the interior of the clothing.
- Lavarock, on 11/25/2008, -1/+6You're a ***** idiot. Deer can easily kill you.
- seltaeb4, on 11/25/2008, -0/+5This wouldn't be necessary if the deer weren't such a bunch of cheaters.
- holysin, on 11/25/2008, -1/+6Dug for the irony of for all intents and purposes a deer hunting article appearing in the New York Times. And for people whining about the advantages us mean humans get over the cute deer. In many cities there are just too many deer, to such an extent that there is hunting allowed in urban areas to cull the population. (By and large said hunting is bow hunting only, and with a special permit, but still, it's hunting :) ) No, I don't hunt, I just like venison and technology.
- Balath, on 11/25/2008, -0/+5Evolution has been doing that for them for millions of years.
- ElatedPanda, on 11/25/2008, -0/+4you really linked to a taledega nights clip?
- palehorse864, on 11/25/2008, -0/+4Forget that! We need to develop dayglo orange forests!
- c010rb1indusa, on 11/25/2008, -0/+4That was really interesting, I had no idea that a leopard have spots and tigers have stripes because of their hunting techniques. Evolution really is an amazing thing, it somehow manages to find a niche for almost anything.
- edebolt, on 11/25/2008, -1/+5hunters don't tend to use a shotgun because it deposits many lead pellets into the meat.
- Balath, on 11/25/2008, -0/+4Well, I'm sure we are at least learning some stuff about biological optics from the research. That could be beneficial for humans sight.
- hollywoodphony, on 11/25/2008, -1/+5Hopefully this doesn't also make you invisible to heart attack-prone vice presidents, either.
- Virgule, on 11/25/2008, -0/+41-brake harder
2-turn off the headlights (use one 'click' of handbrake if they are always on)
3-honk like a very angry chap. - rahulkolasseri, on 11/25/2008, -0/+4duct tape and a good bath
- yurishoujo, on 11/25/2008, -0/+4That guy does not have nearly enough blaze orange on.... good way to die.
- DotFreelance, on 11/25/2008, -2/+5Hunting for deer with knives from now on. Everyone knows you run faster with one anyway.
- diggopolous, on 11/25/2008, -0/+3 customize and filter out the sports, videos and the rest that annoy you and you won't see them anymore.
- shawcamera, on 11/25/2008, -0/+3Made me stop for a minute and think....who out there views us as deer? Hmmmmmm...... our vision is considered fairly limited also.....
- kenlaw, on 11/25/2008, -0/+3It's not as much sight as sound and smell, with deer. Remember deer hunter's are required to wear bright orange hats and vests! Turkey's depend more on sight. Controlled deer hunting is very important in areas like Missouri. We average over 10K car-deer accidents per year.
- tiklmahbawls, on 11/25/2008, -0/+3Deer are magnetically attracted to cars I think, one time when one jumped out in front of me on the freeway I swerved back and forth twice and it kept reversing with me and staying in my path, it ended up bouncing off the side of my truck and leaving a nice dimple.
- LastDitchHero, on 11/25/2008, -2/+5This is pretty neat. I have always wondered which camos work better on deer. I wonder if they can make it into a blaze orange vest so I can still meet my safety requirement.
- ZenMojo, on 11/25/2008, -1/+4Hence, why we invented octocamo, to give the hunters a "fair chance."
Sorry, but if dude's not chasing it down with a knife in his teeth or at least firing a bow and arrow, he's an *****. - MacParrot, on 11/25/2008, -0/+3I've already got an invisible suit to the human eye. It's really great and...well...I can't find since it got back from the dry cleaners
- kd1s, on 11/26/2008, -0/+3Actually in many areas deer no longer have a natural predator so every now and then a herd cull is necessary.
- DemDude, on 11/25/2008, -0/+3Deer 1: "Jeremy?"
Deer 2: "What"
"JEREMY?!"
"WHAAT?!"
"Did you see that?"
"See what?"
"I don't know, but I thought I'd seen something, like orange pixels or something..."
"Oh shi-" - DemDude, on 11/25/2008, -0/+2*honk* *wave arms like a mad man*
"LOUD NOISES!!!" - Homerr, on 11/25/2008, -1/+3I'm so damn tired of hearing "TAPPING INTO" and "TAP IT". ***** you Sarah Palin for popularizing this phrase.
- c010rb1indusa, on 11/25/2008, -1/+3You're a douche
- LastDitchHero, on 11/26/2008, -0/+2Deer hunting is also to keep population in check.
- Virgule, on 11/25/2008, -1/+3Evolution is purely consequential; it does not 'find' anything.
- Virgule, on 11/25/2008, -0/+2http://i37.tinypic.com/2co63w8.jpg
- WRXFiles, on 11/25/2008, -0/+2who cares that you didn't read the comment? goof.
- rabidbob, on 11/25/2008, -0/+2@jcounterman - I've never heard of hunting deer with a shotgun and slug rounds. Good info, thanks. How does the carcass hold up? Can it be a mess? I'd imagine the wound would be fairly large, but I don't know much about shotgun slugs beyond the fact that they exist and are next to impossible to get hold of in the UK. I don't think it'd be legal to hunt with them here, but don't quote me on that!!
- inactive, on 11/25/2008, -0/+2Why doesn't it just make them look like cars?
