- Skewler, on 06/22/2009, -2/+8This is incredibly important.
- max1001, on 06/22/2009, -0/+4Because consumers always know where their local supermarket's supply chain comes from.
- NuclearIsShit, on 06/22/2009, -2/+6And hence why you should be buying Canadian beef
- inactive, on 06/22/2009, -1/+5And hence why you should be buying American beef
- inactive, on 06/22/2009, -0/+3Greenpeace is using the MPF like the RIAA or Scientology is using the US justice system. It's not a question of justice, but of "punishing" those who have offended them while separating them from as much money as possible to be funneled into interests they support. It's a pretty common tactic for groups like that.
- sndream, on 06/22/2009, -2/+5Boycott all Brazil's farm product!!!
- HappyTux, on 06/22/2009, -1/+4No it is why you should be buying locally produced food wherever you may be.
- Skewler, on 06/22/2009, -1/+3Obviously it is the consumers that are buying the items they are selling.
This is an attempt to use litigation to curb illegal, highly destructive deforestation, fueled by the meat industry.
C'mon. Think a little. It feels good after awhile. - norman619, on 06/22/2009, -0/+1I say boycott stupidity.
- inactive, on 06/22/2009, -0/+1Fail! There is no such place!
- inactive, on 06/22/2009, -2/+3but... but... profits! and jobs! and economy! You have to let businesses do whatever they want! otherwise you'll hurt the economy!
- Spire3660, on 06/22/2009, -2/+3Dont know why you are being dugg down, you are spot on.
- funkywood, on 06/22/2009, -0/+1This is the sort of research and journalism that green journalists should be doing because it gets consumers and therefore businesses to change their bad practices. More please.
- Nekura20x6, on 06/22/2009, -0/+1Amazon.com has a rain forest now? Man - they really do have everything!
- bevegan, on 09/26/2009, -0/+1When the newly created pasture is no longer suitable for grazing, they grow soy crops on it. 80% of these crops are turned into feed for livestock, a lot of which is shipped overseas to Europe and others. So even if you eat local beef, you may still be contributing indirectly to Amazon destruction.
On top of this, livestock are the greatest emitters of greenhouse gases, more than all the transportation of the world combined. They emit methane, a gas which is 100 times more potent than CO2 over a 5 year period, but which dissipates out of the atmosphere quickly since it has a half life of 8.5 years, while CO2 can stick around for 100's or even 1000's of years.
To halt Amazon destruction, and to reverse global warming, we need to target short term GHG reduction to have an immediate cooling effect, which will buy us the time we need to figure out how to take care of the CO2. By reducing our meat intake, or going vegetarian or completely vegan, we can each do our part, more than changing lightbulbs or changing our cars. We can do those too, but remember that a vegetarian in a hummer has a lower carbon footprint than a meat eater on a bike. - overtoke, on 06/22/2009, -1/+2they also don't ask, except for the few responsible ones
- norman619, on 06/22/2009, -1/+1This comment made zero contribution to the discussion yet it got dugg up. LOL!!!
- Skewler, on 06/22/2009, -0/+0Well gosh mister, thanks for your little pearl of wisdom!
I contributed exactly what I meant to, which was to offer my simple opinion that this is an important story, in opposition to the batch of idiotic comments above. LOL!!!
- Skewler, on 06/22/2009, -3/+3But that's irrelevant. The point is that someone is trying to do something to slow down this wanton obliteration of an irreplaceable ecosystem. It's the only method they have: litigation.
Illegal deforestation is the real cash grab. Y'all just dont like feeling guilty. - Sanfranon5, on 06/22/2009, -3/+3hi im 12.
Isnt amazon in america? - CressCrowbits, on 06/22/2009, -2/+1locdogg: and this is a ... bad thing?
- norman619, on 06/22/2009, -2/+1Locally produced food usually can't support the population which is why various countires import food.
- EverybodyPanic, on 06/22/2009, -11/+6I like shopping at Amazon so I'm distressed that supermarkets are destroying it.
- inactive, on 06/22/2009, -10/+5FTA: "We want all companies who are part of this destructive economic chain to be responsible for their economic crimes."
In other words, "We're really looking to sue pretty much everyone who's ever even looked at a steak. It's a cash grab bonanza!" - inactive, on 06/22/2009, -8/+1Good, the Amazon forest is just full of huge overgrown cockroaches. icky
