- Wildthing, on 10/11/2007, -3/+79Now if only I could get a WRX STI that ran on recycled products rather than 18 mpg of premium fuel...
- diggless, on 10/11/2007, -1/+25I live near this plant and a friend of mine who attends Purdue university in the same town as the university says they have one of the best auto plant tours you can go on.
- TDot1980, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19Anyone else have a problem with the term "Partial Zero?" How the ***** does one get a part of nothing? : /
- tarnalberry, on 10/11/2007, -2/+18Unfortunately, not all dealerships know about the PZEV vehicles, and the corporate headquarters may tell you that they can't get them in some states.
When I decided to get an Outback (it was the most fuel efficient vehicle with it's clearance), and discovered through the EPA's website that they made PZEV's, I found it to initially be a bit of a hassle to get one in the Seattle area. After a number of calls, including exploring the option of going to California, where they were readily available, to get one, the local salesperson I worked with was able to get everything worked out and have one driven from Oregon. They didn't have any in the state!
I'm still glad I went through the trouble, however. - LotusWolf, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12amazing. makes me think...if all bars were required to recycle the glass bottles they just throw away.
- finista, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10No dump in three years? I wish us humans learn something from that.
- dropoutfilms, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Wait... what? Where do bars just throw glass bottles away??? Most places where people give a ***** about the environment - people pay an environmental levy on all drinking containers at the point of purchase 5-20 cents depending on the size of the container. Then, you can return it for a refund, or throw it on the street, and a trusty homeless bottle collector will be along shortly to collect the recyclable and help feed his addiction. It's really a wonderful system.
This story, and others like it, prove that the ability to be environmentally responsible exists.. but people need to have the will to actually do it. - ricksite, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9You say that as if the Subaru plant is run by aliens.
- slicky803, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Studies have concluded that the plant has produced a total of 1.21 JIGAWATTS!
- Philodox, on 10/11/2007, -9/+15Maybe if you wanted something other than a performance car you might have some luck with that.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8Actually, it's not 18mpg of premium fuel but 1/18th of a gallon per mile of premium fuel.
- herm1t, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Take THAT American automakers! (Who can't even build cars in America because it "costs too much.")
- FlakMonkey, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Like the 505-hp Corvette Z06 that gets 26 MPG highway.
- TDot1980, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I feel so alone... :`(
- Error601, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I suppose I could do the same if I just burned everything I'd usually throw away.
- speakingdreams, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3My wife is from Indiana. She said that it was a very good tour too.
- wolfmann, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Plant is in Lafayette, almost in Dayton...
Purdue is still West Lafayette
//Purdue Alumni still living in Lafayette. - speakingdreams, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Even if he wanted something other than a performance car, he still could not get an STI that runs on recycled products. Or, are you saying that if someone simply wants something that gets better gas mileage, then their car will get better gas mileage. That would be sweet.
- ebcreasoner, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3go away. . .
- DigitalRambler, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4300 hp and you expect better mileage? Drive about any other car with that many ponies and see what your gas mileage is.
- Dharmamooch, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2This is one reason I have driven Subaru vehicles for 16 years.
- CraigJ, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2makes me think I might want to get one of these instead of a FiT...
- earlycj5, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2What did they do? They've moved Purdue across the river into Lafayette or the Subaru plant into West Lafayette?
- ozid, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2A fit is PZEV and gets better 87 octane gas milage. While the plant might use the dump once in a while, you're burning less concentrated fuel, at a slower rate. That being said, I wouldn't stop you. Subaru makes a bunch of great (looking, and feeling) and safe cars. You just have to weigh the benefits ;)
- prisoner24601, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I just want to know what government regulatory genius ever came up with the term "partial zero" anyway. I think my grade school math teacher is rolling over in her grave.
Salesperson: "...and it's a partial-zero emissions vehicle too..." Customer: "Really? That's great! What percentage of zero does it emit? 10% of zero? One-third of zero? I'd really like to know." Is the EPA responsible for this idiocy too? I thought their job was just to make up those "EPA estimated MPG" stickers for car windows that are so far off from your real-world experience you have to wonder if they just made them up in the first place... - insanebrain, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2go away. . .
- evozero, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3awd turbocharged rally cars aren't really going for fuel efficiency.
however, awd turbo cars are a blast to drive. just not a blast to fill up with premium gas. - RevEng, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Not only that, but what bar do you work at? I worked at one nearby and I assure you that every bar in this city recycles their bottles. For one, as dropoutfilms mentioned, there's a 5-20 cent deposit on every plastic/aluminum/glass container. You can sure bet the bar wants that back!
As for the broken bottles, those aren't recycled, but then again I don't know anybody who would take them. - moofer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"This place is run by a bunch of ***** morons"
Welcome aboard, moron. I hope you enjoy your diarrhea tonight. I know I'll be enjoying mine. Try getting out of the bed on the other side tomorrow. Maybe you can be a more respected member of society without that sand in your vagina.
Welcome to my blocklist, assclown. Say hello to the other assclowns while you're in there. - CraigJ, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'm having a hard time identifying which cars are in fact PZEV on Subaru's website.
- KaptainKandy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1cam swap civic beating STi? funny. who said i was running a 2.5i...impreza series is 2.5i/rs,wrx and STi. Have fun with your fart cannon and 94' hatch back civic.
- Ramble, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2No dump in three years.
I strongly advise you to go and see your local doctor. - jeffiek, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1" not all dealerships know about the PZEV vehicles"
Partial is not ZERO and therefor not politically correct. I wonder why a company doesn't promote a vehicle that people obviously want but isn't politically correct. Hmmm..... politics? - HappyScrappy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Yes.
- CraigJ, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1do with what? Did you read the description of the article (let alone read the actual article, 'cause that's way too much work...)
- ozid, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1By the way PZEV is a strategy to avoid having to make a ZEV car (also more beneficial). The ZEV standard was thought up first, and they added the Partial later on. Figure if a car company makes 2 models of PZEV cars, its better off than making just one ZEV. With no emissions comes the need to use a different type of energy to fuel it, and the performance suffers for real world use (I can hardly get on the freeway in my PZEV 1.3L Mazda 3, just imagine a same weight electric car that has to conserve energy to get any kind of fuel economy).
The point is, the P was added later. Another name that never caught on is SULEV... Super Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle. - ozid, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Toyota also builds the new Camry's at this plant. So if you want to support the cause, don't just look at Subaru's. Toyota Camry's are ULEV (ultra low emissions vehicle), I think. And like I said, they are built at the Subaru plant in Indiana.
- moofer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1and emissions scrubbers are quite common now.
- griffin7, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I think that the clean operation of the plant, along with the clean operating vehicles produced by this plant is truly commendable.
More auto companies should be doing these sort of things. - violentvinyl, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Agreed, I dugg it, and wasn't really interested in the article, because I'd heard this before. However, I like to think that by digging this, I'm giving Subaru just that little boost of positive publicity in the hopes that other companies will follow suit. Using Digg to change the world one click at a time so to speak, by digging things that I feel are worthwhile causes.
- theysayjump, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Whilst other car manufacturers should take note of this, if they (Subaru) really want to help the environment they might want to reconsider the whole car-making thing.
Apparently those are bad for the environment. - mhuggins, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Transformers?
- ozid, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Since you knew they wouldn't use the trash for 3 years... 16 years ago. :)
- ozid, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The real ricers are the people that think they are smoking Civics in their base model Imprezas.
Any dual cam swap in any generation Civic would own you, son. - Gir9000, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Subaru owner and proud of it!
- ipfree, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0If they burn garbage to get energy aren't they just sending smoke and ash out the chimney instead of a dump ?
- centauri, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1where i live, its pretty common for people to burn their trash, at least subaru is generating electricity from this.
On a side note, i'd much rather see biodeisel taking off, Compared to most electric cars they're cheap, decently fuel efficient(could be made super efficient, i remember the europeans making a 100Mpg biodeisel car in the 70's) and hey, cheap/clean fuel anyone?! I'm not an environmentalist, i'm a pragmatist. Using biodiesel is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to not only become independent of big oil, but also move to a fairly clean form of fuel, sure it will take engineering, but last time i checked, car companies spent some serious change on engineering. So, all and all, thats my two cents. - Puppetfunk, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1RTFA! Always wanted to say that.
- iamjames, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I've worked at several bars in st. louis missouri and none of them recycled the bottles
