- scottvc, on 10/11/2007, -2/+38Steve Irwin made wildlife and education about animals fun to watch, and you always learnt something.
- fkr3, on 10/10/2007, -1/+28Steve Irwin was the man and judging by his show working with him would have been a whole lot of fun.
- felidaeus, on 10/10/2007, -2/+26Here's to Steve; may the Discovery channel make an annual Steve Irwin week in his honor.
- SilverBack101, on 10/10/2007, -1/+23Crikey! This paper is a beaut!
- Kronos6948, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11We miss you, Steve.
- Goaliemom, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Practice what you preach; learnt is indeed a word.
- McTendo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9you = blocked
- Baelorn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7I don't know about you but it was always pretty obvious to me that the man loved what he did and got paid as a bonus. Not all of us are as lucky...*goes back to the grind*
- UtopiaInTheSky, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Screw reports. Show me the last croc he wrestled!

Bravo on trying to make someone sound stupid... perhaps you need to go back to school - DrSnugglebunny, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4huge fat digg from this crocodilian researcher; poor sod
- Coffeedemon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4They probably understand the relation between currents and how their direction relates to where they're going. Its not an in depth knowledge of geographic landmarks but probably more of a 'knowledge' in tune with how the world functions at a baser level.
- jhourcle, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7Who else would do it? Lots of people, judging by Dirty Jobs:
- newzooreview, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Steve Irwin was a good guy, but scientists and grad students do this sort of thing all the time. Science is hard work, and often requires mucking about in messy and hazardous tasks.
msaleem needs to get a clue that most science is not about wandering around sterile faciltiies with a lab coat and pocket protector. - deathproof, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3People think they are so cool ripping on Steve Irwin while their fat asses sit at their computer and call him gay? I mean come on you ***** fat acne infested virgins. The guy wrangled crocodiles! What are you doing? Sitting here in your moms basement you'll never do anything as cool as Steve did. you probably wont even have sexual relations with a woman.
- darkstar808, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Dunno if it was Steve or the publishing company but:

Very cool - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3You're an idiot.
- atomicwedgie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Rest in peace Steve... you have surely left your mark on this world during your time and now your daughters. WE MISS YOU!
- emjaymj, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4There are apparently many migratory birds and fish who are "smarter" than you then...
- MaZAKaR, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I think you have mistaken Steve for the "Wild Boys" on MTV...
- designerutah, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Way to generalize and wind up sounding like an ignorant snob yourself.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Learnt
Incorrect, eh? - MagicCake, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2He, uh... he had a wife... I'm pretty sure that's, you know, not gay.
- lithuin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2For a second there I forgot I was on Digg. But then I realized that asking a friendly question will land you at least one insult per legitimate answer, and things made sense again.
- noahhoward, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Touchy.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yeah, you won't see me volunteering. Steve really was made for the job *hats off for the bloke
- spacecookie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1For those who have insulted Steve Irwin for terrorizing animals for entertainment purposes, have unfortunately looked with glasses that see only evil. Unfortunately for science and the protection of species and habitats, it is absolutely necessary to have serious field workers who have to actually interact physically with the animals they are studying. Without this necessary form of data collection, many more species and habitats would have already become permanently extinct. Steve was a fanatic and enthusiastic animal rights advocate. Yes, he was flamboyant, but if he were not, how many people would have turned a deaf and blind to the plight of the many creatures and habitats that he was trying to get us to know, love, respect, and preserve.
- rnwen2750, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2No one cares where you live and perhaps you should do a little independent research on the man before you denounce him. I say this as a person who thought much the same of Steve Irwin until I got over myself and took the time to really look at the facts.
- Stephiems, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I know this has been repeated many times, but Steve Irwin was one of the greatest advocates for animals the world has ever seen. With the money he earned through the shows, etc, he bought thousands of acres of land all over the world so that it would be able to stay undeveloped and be available for the animals forever. I believe that he put the animal above himself in every respect. Obviously the best thing for all animals is to never be handled by humans, but he made more people interested in learning and researching and respecting animals then anyone else, and I can't imagine the number of animals he has indirectly saved just by getting others to love animals.
By the way, the Australians who don't like him are stuck-up and full of themselves and just hate him because they think he has enforced the stereotypical Australia and they want to look like sophisticated elitists instead. The majority of the normal everyday Australians I have met (I live in Australia now) miss Steve just like the Americans. - cogit0, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3As for your grad student question, yeah, I'd make them do that. After tranquilizing the croc first, THEN attaching the equipment. Cause, ya know, that's the normal way to do it. Not everyone has the balls to do it WITHOUT tranquilizing the croc first.
- krackajap, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The fact is he did more for animals and the environment than most people could even hope to do. Not only was he doing work to help the environment and preserve endangered animals, he did it in a way that got the public aware of what was going on. You may have tuned into his shows just hoping to see him get hurt but eventually you did gain some knowledge and awareness about the subjects at hand.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I see what you did there... you bastard.
- djrocksteady, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I can't tell if the summary is being sarcastic, or not....
/sarcasm tags FTW - picsectionpleez, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1no. he was pretty damn cool actually.
- moxley, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1..and as I learned, by watching Steve - the method you suggest is problematic for the croc - they don't do well with tranqs, it's very hard on them.
- napsack, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Ha ha dug fir simple the humor in "I refuse to believe a crocodile is smarter than I am."
- scottvc, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1here, you ignorant *****. http://www.askoxford.com/asktheexperts/faq/aboutsp ...
also, since you seem to be the English expert, where is the apostrophe on 'films'? - coturnix, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0The original post is here:
http://scienceblogs.com/clock/2007/09/last_paper_b ... - lithuin, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3There's one thing that I really don't get about this. How did the crocodile that swam around the cape know it was a cape? If you fly me in a helicopter and drop me on the beach, I'm not going to know which way will take me around the cape even if you told me I was on a cape. I refuse to believe a crocodile is smarter than I am.
- intense321, on 10/10/2007, -6/+6He's just an ignorant American. Americans often think their way is the only way, and that they invented the English language.
- napsack, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1because everything on wiki is fact?
- coturnix, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Yes, all the papers on PLoS are Open Access.
- emjaymj, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Wasn't trying to insult you, just trying to point out how absurd it is to think that the ability of a crocodile to get its bearings has anything to do with intelligence.
If that really was so hard to figure out though, then maybe the statement wasn't actually too far off - gandhii, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I think it is possible that you are just jealous of a person that is more fun to be around than yourself. Even now ;]
- coturnix, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0No, the summary (which is mine, from my blog) is out of context and is a tribute to the guy - I know how difficult this was to do.
- mlagana, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1haha i love how much americans love steve. I bet most of the insults here are from Australia. I lost respect for him when he gave john howard props for his handling of asylum seekers.
- javip, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1It's a generalization, but that's because generally, what he said is true =)
- bitORlogic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Yeah, but it's usually less bad for the croc than the other way is bad for the grad student. :D
- picsectionpleez, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2I don't care what you say "learnt" is a retarded abomination of the word Learned.
- uknowwhoibe, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2I guess this was his final stab at a heart-felt paper...
