- johnwc723, on 11/29/2007, -1/+9The problem is I doubt the people in the country are making much money off of it, as usual the core countries are exploiting the resources of the periphery
- ZenMojo, on 11/29/2007, -1/+8You know, the whole deal with renewable resources is "renewing" them.
- geneticlemon, on 11/29/2007, -3/+8Palm oil is NOT healthy. When used, it's partially hydrogenated, like all trans fats, which means it can cause your arteries to harden and clog. US markets love to use it in their foods as a preservative, however. Compare your typical US brand Nutella to an imported jar of Nutella from Europe -- see the difference? It's disgusting.
- Desolite, on 11/29/2007, -1/+4if you really look at the pictures, 1985-2000 look very similar. 2000-2005 also look very similar. now look at 2005-2010: that is a HUGE difference! and 2010-2020 is an absurd difference! 1950-1985 is a 35 year difference, so it's understandable that there is a big difference in concentration but it seems like the pictures are using those for the basis of it's smaller incremental future concentration pictures. what type of trend is that? i'm calling *****.
- wtfmate112, on 11/29/2007, -3/+5Well live in poverty and rely on others or cut down some trees and make money.
- zizzo, on 11/29/2007, -1/+3mmm... Nutella
- ZenMojo, on 11/29/2007, -3/+5What American actually uses Nutella? We should check his papers.
- audioslavery, on 11/29/2007, -1/+3Palm oil is one of the worst fatty oils for you.
They need to stop producing it. - geneticlemon, on 11/29/2007, -0/+2Don't deport me, bro. :(
- thugok, on 11/29/2007, -1/+3Not likely, this is treehugger.
- inactive, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1Yes, but I find it strange that NONE of the tree huggers out there seem to object to this kind of MONO CULTURE insanity when it is applied to
so called global warming abatement schemes. I guess they discount the erosion of creditably their blind support for this myth is causing. - FortyCaliber, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1Sounds like a Senate Bill 1959 issue to me!
- snypa, on 11/29/2007, -2/+3Thanks for letting me know these are _sad_ pics, not the usual happy ones.
- Narrator, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1Let me spiritually channel the mind of the american elites for a second:
"You mean I can still drive my SUV, stop global warming, starve useless eaters in the developing world, and make money off of selling carbon credits all at the same time! Horray for biofuels!"
- momsshizzle, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1We use it in my family. Wife is from Thailand.
- jcaino, on 11/29/2007, -1/+2i wonder if this takes into account deforestation due to construction and other expansion...
- mpredosin, on 11/29/2007, -1/+2Opps, wrong comment & can't remove it.
- Synchro, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1I do. It's nummy. I got my first taste of it when I was an exchange student in Germany years ago. They even had this one that was made from almonds instead. It was even better, but I have been unable to find it since then. Problem is i cannot remember the name of the product.
- geneticlemon, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1I love Nutella, so when I found out what palm oil was and that it was used in the US brand of Nutella, I decided to make the effort of going to a European market and buying it straight from import. Trust me, the imported version tastes a whole lot better -- not as waxy.
- OneLess, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1Where does it claim to be satellite pics?
- JoshChan, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1Indonesia is like your hair
- earthwormzim, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1Industrialization...it means more people are living higher quality lives, and less people are starving to death on meager farms. Good for them!
- geneticlemon, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1srsly.
- inactive, on 11/29/2007, -1/+2Great satellite pics!!
/sarcasm - ltchimpo, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1Umm, there seems to be a monster leap from 2005 to 2010. I mean look at http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&tim ...
There seems to be a lot of liberty taken in those estimates. I mean, it's 2007 and the satellites are telling me there's a lot of forest that still has to be de'd in the next three years (assuming google's images aren't more than a year old).
Also, those projections were put together by the World Wide Fund for Nature (http://www.panda.org/about_wwf/where_we_work/asia_ ... ). So, you know, there's obviously no monetary reward for overestimating the deforestation in the coming years, I mean, the WWF wouldn't stand to gain anything at all from this, obviously making it a completely unbiased report. - Poovey, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1They're Trees! They will grow back eventually.
- ltchimpo, on 11/29/2007, -0/+0Indeed, and with images supplied by the World Wildlife Fund you know there's no financial motive. Not that the ppl working for the WWF want to have nice offices, good salaries, etc... after all, they are saving the world. But who am I to judge, I drive a hummer and own two log cabins.

- FortyCaliber, on 11/29/2007, -1/+1It makes good BioDiesel
- BluthBoy, on 11/29/2007, -3/+3Its saddening to think that there can never be a true balance... that if one group is prospering, another must be paying the price. And the sad reality of it is that its gonna continue.
- Dush, on 11/29/2007, -0/+0I wonder how they get to the projections for 2020?
In the five years between 2000 and 2005 there seems to be basicaly no change. - GvnMcCld, on 11/29/2007, -2/+2Probably not, I'm sure treehugger.com wants to make it as dramatic as possible.
- larcher01, on 11/29/2007, -1/+0Not EVERY problem is the result of global warming, but the ones that are are pretty serious.
Help to raise awareness: www.eradicatedcarbon.com - benitojuarez, on 11/29/2007, -2/+1It kinda sucks for borneo though, they have a really unique ecology, I beleive the komodo dragon is from borneo along with a ton of other unique species. holy crap, i can finally post comments in ie7 again.
- eyesmell, on 11/29/2007, -2/+0Theres a place called the rainforest that truly sucks ass
