- sheagunther42, on 05/08/2009, -0/+23Really cool, but my first thought was "skaters are going to grind the ***** out of those".
- mantis108, on 05/08/2009, -1/+13Very cool. I want one for my backyard.
- zeronationarmy, on 05/09/2009, -1/+12That would certainly get me outside.
- mojofomoro, on 05/09/2009, -0/+7We will call it the pornbench
- jasdf, on 05/09/2009, -0/+7When are we going to start to see solar powered street lights? A nice solar panel + a bunch of super bright LEDs would do the trick.
- billricardi, on 05/09/2009, -1/+7"how much would these things cost?"
Which means you don't know what they cost.
"No city could afford them except as a show piece"
How would you know, when you have no idea what they cost?
Logic fail. - JBSchweitzer, on 05/29/2009, -0/+5..... that would absolutely burn your bum
- inactive, on 05/09/2009, -1/+6did they think through the fact that if the benches are being sat on all day, how are the cells going to recharge when they're being blocked by ass?
- jasdf, on 05/09/2009, -3/+7Well, then the skater will go to jail where he belongs (if and only if he destroys property, I'm not saying that all skaters belong in jail).
- DireWolf11, on 05/08/2009, -3/+7how much would these things cost? No city could afford them except as a show piece, a la the cops on segways in dtown chicago,
maybe these would work best as in corporate parks around office buildings? - ZhiZaki, on 05/08/2009, -2/+5I'm typically against some of these ridiculous "green" ideas....but I love this one.... so simple and elegant.
- somnus, on 05/09/2009, -0/+3Off the top of my ass, I'd say benches are sat on less than half the time the sun is out. Maybe there's a "day in the life of a bench" YouTube video out there that will back me up.
- mikemehak, on 05/09/2009, -0/+3I can think of way more productive uses for green technology.
I don't think out door wireless routers are leading factors in energy drain.
Why not make solar bus shelters and the solar powers the lights all night?
Solar assisted traffic lights, road signs, etc...
But a solar powered wifi bench sounds silly to me. - Luigison, on 05/09/2009, -0/+2Instead of wires to each bench wouldn't it be better to have wireless WiFi repeaters?
- Knowa22, on 05/09/2009, -0/+2Cool idea!
This kind of everyday, small-scale integration of solar power is exactly what's needed. - somnus, on 05/09/2009, -0/+2Warning: not for nudist colonies.
- MadHarvey, on 05/09/2009, -0/+2"only if" ?
Wow, being a skater is AWESOME. - hereticoftruth, on 05/10/2009, -0/+1I would rather have those solar panels in the roof over the park bench protecting me from the summer mid day sun....and cold Perrier on tap please?
- billricardi, on 05/09/2009, -0/+1Fairly cheap to build. The panels themselves would run you about 75 quid. Frame, encasing, and Plexiglas would be about 100 (including weatherproofing for the WAP). Decent WAP about 30. Bits and bobs for plugging in the electronics and stepping down the power, another 20 quid. 50 quid for an L-A battery suite. So about 275 GBP per unit, plus infrastructure costs.
- Nrvana423, on 05/09/2009, -1/+2This is one of the coolest things I have heard of.
- jasdf, on 05/09/2009, -0/+1@MadHarvey
Unfortunately skaters cannot even follow this one rule. - PeachesTheCow, on 05/08/2009, -1/+2yeah, needs solar powered skater crasher
- mybad4990, on 05/10/2009, -0/+1Maybe we can power them with ass heat?
- bebemaster, on 05/09/2009, -0/+1Seating? Flat plexiglass. Check.
Power? Solar panels. Check.
Energy storage? Plenty of space for batteries. Check.
Light? Lower power LEDs. Check.
Wi-Fi access? Cheap wi router. Check.
Internet connectivity? Oh that just happens by magic.....
While its quite trivial to provide wireless access to the dead end of a park bench its quite another to then have some way of connecting to the internet. There are methods but the story completly leaves it out. You need some service provider and you need a connection to the bench be it wireless or wired. Having a wire go to the bench to provide the connectivity really defeats the whole purpose of having solar panals for power just run another wire. MANET or MESH networks do exists but it would be good to have the artical include something about what they were thinking instead of just saying it magically provides wi-fi. - slyzxx, on 05/09/2009, -0/+1Omg that's so genius porn outside my life is complete now.
- somnus, on 05/09/2009, -0/+1Considering that a lot of cities go with the cheapest possible concrete or metal benches these days, I'm going with DireWolf11 on this one. I'll bet these things cost more than a regular bench (battery, solar panels, WiFi, maintenance, R&D, etc).
- somnus, on 05/11/2009, -0/+1Maybe with flatulence turbines.
- gronkers, on 05/09/2009, -0/+1ever try to use a laptop in sunlight?
- stephhicks68, on 05/09/2009, -0/+1I will so be looking for one of these benches in my hometown!! Wifi access at the park! Solar-powered! Two of my favorite things.
- molochi, on 05/09/2009, -0/+1I don't know why you got dug down. Something like a pavilion with solar panels on the roof would be more sensible.
- Someb0dy, on 05/09/2009, -2/+2You're only going to get dugg down suggesting that to all these internet warriors.
I agree though. - Someb0dy, on 05/09/2009, -1/+1Now the park hobo has internet access before most of the world.
- scoottie, on 05/09/2009, -1/+1Should be gas powered
- ZetaMale, on 05/09/2009, -0/+0It shouldn't be far off. In my town we have solar panels on signs that have flashing lights (school zone, stop light ahead, etc.).
- ahhell, on 05/09/2009, -7/+6Jesus is that really necessary?
Do we really need internet access ***** everywhere?
I never thought i would say this but unplug for 5 secs and look around. - enozten, on 05/09/2009, -2/+1good to see more solar options, but of all the things i would want to put solar panels on a bench would be one of the worst. first, your ass would get warm, and why would you want them to be covered when people sit on them?? put them on the roof of a car or use them as a shade area or something. that would be much smarter.
- inactive, on 05/09/2009, -10/+4Hey...Where is the coin slot? I will tell all my Jew friends about this!
