- alapoet, on 07/03/2008, -1/+12Best news I've seen today!
- fdw2006, on 07/03/2008, -1/+10Anyone know which publicly traded companies stand to build these solar farms worth $40 Billion?
- wille1623, on 07/04/2008, -0/+7Dugg for the funny title, "Solar Power Goes BOOM in Nevada." Sounds like something a five year old would say.
- yaosio, on 07/04/2008, -0/+5BTW, within 5 years and possibly sooner solar power will be cheaper than other forms of power generation. As solar power becomes more advanced, areas with less sunlight will also be able cheaply use sunlight for power. Here's a picture showing how much energy is used and how much solar energy hits the planet.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Available_Energ ... - rhino_rampant, on 07/04/2008, -0/+5Alternate Titles which didn't make the cut:
"Solar Power Brightens Nevada Economy"
"Nevada: The Second Sunshine State?"
"Las Vegas: Sun City, USA"
...and if all else fails:
"xkcd" - Inflammo, on 07/04/2008, -0/+5Finally something beneficial, besides gambling and prostitution, from my fine state!
- gavinhudson, on 07/04/2008, -0/+4Solar's huge right now. This is good news.
- yaosio, on 07/04/2008, -0/+3Because you are a moron.
- ripple123, on 07/04/2008, -0/+3I think this may be the first ever incidence in which a joke sucks so much, that it makes people deeply and personally despise the person who wrote it.
- swicken, on 07/04/2008, -0/+2I was actually kind of sad that it wasn't about a mass mysterious solar panel explosion :(
Damn misleading titles!
It is good news though :D - jamie191817, on 07/04/2008, -0/+2yeah, i think i might invest in them also .....
- superkendall, on 07/04/2008, -1/+3Because as of yet we lack cheap solar panels. Otherwise, everyone would just put them on the house to save money - right?
But right now it takes a great deal of time to make back an investment in solar panels, it makes sense to wait for the price to drop a bit more before we really start deploying them in mass quantities. - inactive, on 07/04/2008, -1/+3Oil mafia is right there to stop it.
- yaosio, on 07/04/2008, -0/+2Actually they are being built in the USA. Good job making up lies though.
- tuxerware, on 07/04/2008, -0/+2Well that's the whole thing about solar panels, the solar energy isn't hitting the ground! The solar energy is being collected by solar panels!!
- inactive, on 07/04/2008, -0/+2OK, try ESLR, STP, YGE, FSLR, LDK and more, check TAN index as well.
- bsmeteronhigh2, on 07/04/2008, -1/+3Amazingly, John Ensign (R) of Nevada seems to hate solar and would rather see oil and gas companies receive subsidies. Thankfully, Harry Reid (D), a lifelong Nevadan, realizes that the sun does shine here in the Silver State.
- phreak79, on 07/04/2008, -0/+2And in the same week as the planning regulations for solar were relaxed again. Great news for the industry in America.
- ripple123, on 07/04/2008, -0/+2big coal then. same diff.
- int10h, on 07/04/2008, -0/+2How old are you ?
- sockpuppets, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1Something has to power all those hookerbots.
- FaithclubDotNet, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1I'm still very happy the BLM lifted the moratorium. I see solar energy as a rising alternative to fossil fuels for grid power and for hybrids or hydrogen cars.
- freeth1nker, on 07/08/2008, -0/+15
- bsmeteronhigh2, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1That's why I sold my boat that was docked at Lake Mead. Amazing how far the water has dropped. Of course, what is even more amazing is that the Las Vegas Wash, carrying all of the recycled waste water from Las Vegas, is upstream from the water supply inlets at Lake Mead!
- inactive, on 07/04/2008, -2/+3All the solar power in the world won't help residents of Nevada unless they can figure out how to get more water to the area. In last month's National Geographic the Nevada State Water Commissioner was quoted as saying "We're *****" in regard to the lack of water resources.
- tuxerware, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1how so?
- freeth1nker, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1I agree, wholeheartedly. That was awful.
- DR3MA, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1I believe there is a appeal to stop developing solar power on all the southwest part of USA for the next 2 years until "ambient impact" are measured, it was dugg recently
So, what BOOM ?. - yaosio, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1If only we had some way to remove salt from water. LOOKS LIKE BUSH WON'T RELEASE THE TECHNOLOGY!
- inactive, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1It's still a huge environmental disruption.
- Seidoger, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1Steve Jobs called, he wants his favorite word back.
- yaosio, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1Why do you ignore the fact that they ARE NOT DOING THIS NOW! Stop ignoring the truth.
http://www.ecogeek.org/content/view/1828/
The original was only for 6 states on public land though, no idea why ecogeek decided to make up a story and say it was the entire USA. - elpifco99, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1Oil is, however, used to move cars. And do a lot of other things that could be done with electricity, if it became cheap and non-polluting enough. you don't need a tinfoil hat to see that.

http://jeniya.info - inactive, on 07/03/2008, -1/+2Well Nevada has enough sun so why not take advantage of it. Florida, Texas, and the Southwest are also candidates.
- MorganMghee, on 07/04/2008, -0/+0They are being put together in the US, parts and manufacture are happening overseas mostly.
Yorktown Heights, NY, USA: IBM and Tokyo Ohka Kogyo Co-operate on Thin Film Development. Tokyo Ohka Kogyo Co., Ltd and IBM are collaborating to establish new, low-cost methods for bringing the next generation of solar energy products to market
San Jose, CA, USA: SunPower to Build New Cell Plant in Malaysia. SunPower Corporation will build its next solar cell fabrication plant in Malaysia. When fully operational, Fab 3 is expected to have a nameplate rating in excess of 1-gigawatt of annual production capacity.
Menlo Park, CA, USA: Signet Solar Expands Manufacturing Capacity with Indian Thin Film Plant. Signet Solar, a manufacturer of silicon thin film photovoltaic modules said this week, the company plans to locate its second manufacturing site in the Sriperembudur Special Economic Zone near Chennai, India.

Signet Solar - Industry's first ever Gen 8.5 (5.7 m2 ) silicon thin film solar PV module in May of 2008 at its new factory near Dresden, Germany
Advent Solar in NM, however they have been in business since 2003 and have yet to put out a product. In March they laid off their workforce and will phase out production until next year.
Suniva announced it will open it's plant in Atlanta GA, but again, no product from them yet.
The incentives and the market and in most cases the materials costs just aren't as good here. I'm sure there are some, but I think most of them are not here. - inactive, on 07/05/2008, -1/+1Why would oil companies be against this? Oil isn't used to generate electricity. Coal companies however...
- dagnome1984, on 07/04/2008, -1/+1Nanosolar makes cheap solar panels that are 1/10th the cost of traditional panels. The only reason why you can't get them here is because the demand is outrageously high. They currently have a 12 month waiting list.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=Rlb-WA9sEBQ&feature=rel ... - beauley, on 07/04/2008, -1/+1With Global Warming on many people's minds, do we have any ideas of the best way to lessen the impact on our future, or maybe a possible relief of its possible ravages or even a possible key to its eventual reversal. Many scientific experts have proposed

Solar Power, Source of Endless Energy - fireofenergy, on 07/04/2008, -1/+0I believe that solar thermal can (not only) provide all the energy needed in a post fossil fueled world, but also the positive albedo needed to make up for melting glaciers. Imagine seeing deserts covered with mirrors from space... They glisten with the PROOF that humanity can indeed stop GW. Not that the sun itself will be reflected, only the bright space next to it in the sky. Only when there is excess generation will the actual sunlight be reflected back, cooling the desert even more. CO2 still has to be sucked up from plants and soil to revearse GW.
Recently, I emailed the BLM to allow access (on public lands) for largescale solar thermal saying that "it is basicly our only hope of survival past post oil!"
I know that nuclear can surpass solar (only recycled in breeders since uranium is also finite) but not near the amount of people will go for it as for solar! All of the tech problems can be resolved such as powerline distribution to less sunny states, heat storage, ect.
Obviously, only the big oil guys and their partners, gov, ect can stop such a responsible thing to do for our future. Even if we didn't cause global warming doesn't mean we don't have to stop it. The main concern is the melting glaciers!!! - fakekevinrose, on 07/04/2008, -2/+1SUCK MY DICK
- allaboutdatiki, on 07/03/2008, -2/+1datiki needs to build a little hut somewhere in Nevada ...
- DiggStarFleet, on 07/04/2008, -2/+1Kudos to the "geeks" of Nevada who made this happen.
@slowmo - LOL, you're right. They have all the sun they need but they don't have enough water. - jmartin1117, on 07/04/2008, -1/+0Great news for Nevada, but there are a lot of other solar power friendly places that need to be tapped into as well. Solar currently provides only 0.01% of the country's electricity - if this is going to grow to a substantial level a lot of work needs to be done, and quick
- nowhereelse, on 07/04/2008, -1/+0Whoop-de-do. US taxpayers are subsidising the future monopolies.
- fireofenergy, on 07/04/2008, -1/+0The land should be free for all of us who want to live in a post carbon world. It won't happen if they had to pay for the land!!!
- SundayBrunch, on 07/04/2008, -2/+1yeah, good luck with all those green jobs, ***** in nevada and the west, let's see how long that ***** lasts.
- patpl22391, on 07/04/2008, -3/+2It's only going "boom", because it is highly subsidized. If it wasn't, only the rich could afford to install them.
- osmaker, on 07/04/2008, -5/+4I love to bash oil companies and Bush just like everyone else, but...
OIL IS HARDLY EVER USED TO GENERATE ELECTRICITY.
Sorry tinfoil-hat wearers, but there really is no big-corporation conspiracy that has prevented solar from catching on in the past.
Solar is catching on now because investors are willing to dump millions into it and oh yeah, the US government is providing large subsidies and giving away public land (and lots of it; solar farms aren't small things). - bincoder, on 07/04/2008, -3/+1I'm still slightly concerned about using BLM land for solar.
On one hand the BLM leases out land for cattle ranching and stuff, which you don't really notice while visiting those lands. A few cows are less noticable than acres of glaring mirrors blasting sunlight all over the place. When I go to the desert, I do like to see desert, not construction sites. Thats my enviro concern since jackrabbits and such will not care less about solar. Peeps worry that all the electricity is going to magically vanish, but they live in foreign countries or up north where coal is used.
I live in the desert. We have plenty of power, the price is no higher than it was when gasoline was cheap, due to hydro and nuclear power with some solar thrown in.
Solar can be made to cover the entire surface, but that isn't going to do a thing to reduce the price of already cheap and plentiful power.
What about power in the states that are still on coal? Solar here can't be transmitted to New England, even if it was obtained for free, so they will continue to use coal.
Another concern is why should the government hand over free land to developers who are already richer than god?
I think if they want to build things, let them do so by purchasing their own land.
Thats what everyone else has to do. Just because its about solar doesn't mean automatically give them anything they want. -
