- mentallyinhell, on 06/16/2008, -4/+114How much of a strokejob is he getting from oil companies? Seriously, you can't attack green energy, its just irrational.
- drake77, on 06/16/2008, -1/+72A senator from Nevada, one of the sunniest states in the union, fighting -against- solar power...
Please wake me when the craziness is over. - sk11, on 06/16/2008, -2/+53"In a scathing letter, later released to the press, Ensign accused the lobby group of squandering goodwill by accusing him of favouring "billionaire hedge fund managers" over job creation in Nevada."
"Ensign said that he opposed the bills because the funds for tax breaks would have been raised by increasing the burden on the oil and gas industry"
If he doesn't like the criticism, he shouldn't whore himself out like that. - Dralha, on 06/16/2008, -4/+38Just another big oil hack.
- inactive, on 06/16/2008, -1/+31Hes just mad cuz the solar lobby didn't offer him any money...
- TheCarDude, on 06/16/2008, -2/+29hopefully the Consumer First Energy Act and the Renewable Energy and Job Creation Acts are not blocked this time.
- carpespasm, on 06/16/2008, -1/+27That was my first thought as well. Nevada has hundreds of square miles of cheap as hell, flat, sunlit 90+% of the year land where solar farms would find as a great location. That would make people think of Nevada as more than "that place where Las Vegas is". What is the oil and gas industry paying this guy to get him to sell his own state so squarely down the river?
- hackiavelli, on 06/16/2008, -2/+26"Nevada solar executives had privately become increasingly unhappy with the Senator’s record of voting against bills containing the tax credits. Ensign said that he opposed the bills because the funds for tax breaks would have been raised by increasing the burden on the oil and gas industry. Earlier this spring, he co-sponsored an alternative approach, calling for tax credits without the corresponding offsets."
So basically he's another borrow-and-spend Republican. - drake77, on 06/16/2008, -2/+23Why not call him and ask?
http://ensign.senate.gov/about/contact.htm - Jexie, on 06/16/2008, -1/+21I'd love to know what this burden is he thinks is on the o & g industry, record profits while still receiving billions in tax breaks must be real tough to handle.
- piznut, on 06/16/2008, -2/+21Wow what a freaking baby.
He doesnt even discuss the merits or disadvantages of a tax credit for solar energy and whines like a spoiled child because solar energy lobbyists aren't kissing his ass just right?
He also mentions that using a tax increase for fossil energy energy industries to fund this credit would blunt the benefit to the economy, which shows that he is suffering from some sort of short term economy based tunnel vision.
What a horribly unintelligent person. - Thrilltone, on 06/16/2008, -0/+18It's disgusting how we tolerate these scumbags
who pretend to represent us,
while actually serving their corporate overlords. - inactive, on 06/16/2008, -1/+18He's so gonna get burned.
- LoveWidescreen, on 06/16/2008, -0/+17God damn it ... I'm a republican (in the liberal ocean of Digg ... go figure), and even I don't understand what the hell this guy is bitching about. The first part of "conservatism" is to "conserv(e)", which as far as I'm concerned includes conserving the environment. (One can be a conservationist without being an environmentalist whacko, after all.)
I support tax breaks just as a matter of fact, but furthering a tax break to help people to acquire a still-expensive method of harnessing power from a very natural and powerful source is exactly what we *do* need. It's idiots like this one (and other high-ranking politicians) who make the rest of us look bad. F**k 'em all. This guy's a RINO. - GhostWithToast, on 06/16/2008, -2/+19Isn't is sad that my first question upon reading the title was "I wonder if he's a Republican", and it was a rhetorical question...
- diggB, on 06/16/2008, -1/+17Attacking solar energy probably isn't the brightest idea ...
- inactive, on 06/16/2008, -2/+17First thing I thought was "Is this guy a ***** moron?" Not to mention he looks like a complete douche.
- mr_wej, on 06/16/2008, -1/+15Completely agree, when the first microwave wasn't cost-effective they should have stopped producing them immediately... all this "improve the design as we go" is insane.
Just kidding, you're an R-tard. - lostarchitect, on 06/16/2008, -0/+12is he really whining that these incentives increase the burden on the oil and gas industries? really? THAT'S the excuse? wow.
- PopcornDave, on 06/16/2008, -0/+12The burden is simply that the o&g industry can't charge you for harnessing sunlight.
- traveler1217, on 06/16/2008, -0/+12 You Nevada voters REALLY need to get your collective s**t together and vote this oil pandering sleaze out of office!
- freezeout, on 06/16/2008, -0/+11how much would it cost to surgically remove Big Oil's penis from Senator Ensign's ass?
- Liability, on 06/16/2008, -0/+11
What a *****. Sorry the lobbyists aren't gargling your balls at the right temperature you government whore.
Ensign said that he opposed the bills because the funds for tax breaks would have been raised by increasing the burden on the oil and gas industry.

- inactive, on 06/16/2008, -5/+15Well of course he does... why, this is what senator's do, isn't it? Especially considering how wonderfully last week went for any furtherment of environmentalism...
- DougieD, on 06/16/2008, -0/+10You do well in making yourself sound credible. LOLJKFU.
- Murrabbit, on 06/16/2008, -1/+11These solar energy freaks just want to drain money that rightfully belongs to our nation's mighty "clean" burning COAL technology companies!
- MakiNavaja, on 06/16/2008, -0/+10"Unfair burden on the oil and gas industry"?!
What a ***** tool. - dejay181, on 06/16/2008, -2/+11F**king Republicans. I love this when it says "....effect of “personally alienating” him and other senators"....wow...just says it all. I'm sorry that HIS feelings are hurt but doesn't he work for the people who put him in office? what about their feelings? But alas we have no one but ourselves to blame...give a**holes power unchecked and they run with it and they make sure they can keep it. One day Americans one day...one day i hope we realize we no longer live in a democracy..or in freedom for that matter and that we have the balls to do something about it...till then continue becoming oblivious and numbing yourselves with your electronics
- nextekcarl, on 06/16/2008, -0/+8Why not offer a reason why the OP is wrong?
- mentallyinhell, on 06/16/2008, -2/+10But he wasn't blasting them for food prices or ethanol, he was blasting them because the other senators didn't like him anymore.
- fyngyrz, on 06/16/2008, -0/+8That's fine as an ideal, but while the oil industry, a wellspring of profit, is getting huge tax breaks, doesn't it seem just a *little* unfair that solar is being shorted here?
- zenerdiode, on 06/16/2008, -0/+8Wow, what company do you work for Mr. EE. I sure as hell hope it's not a company I have stock in.
All your years of intensive EE education, training, and work experience tells you Solar Panels don't work at night? Jesus ***** christ...and I just bought a ***** of solar powered flashlights to use for camping!
Seriously, mr genius EE, there's this thing called energy usage pattern, where peak electric grid load and demand occur at around the times when the sun is high in the sky. ...exactly when solar arrays can supplement the grid. Or did you think that these companies were pushing solar to be the sole source of electricity for Nevada? - york2600, on 06/16/2008, -1/+9Most panels have a warranty for 80% output for 30 years so I'm not sure why they'd be in a land fill 20 years from now. Maybe 50 when they actually die.
- monoa, on 06/17/2008, -2/+10One thing the climate denial gang get right is the advice to "follow the money" - they just don't follow the right path:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2008/may/28/ ... - EricSchC1, on 06/16/2008, -0/+8Yeah, because there's no money to be made or economy to salvage in development and implementation of new techniques, right?
- JupiterLander, on 06/16/2008, -0/+8as time goes on I realize that if a republican is against something then it must benefit society and humans in general. If they favor something then it generally has a negative impact on the middle class and or society.
- EricSchC1, on 06/16/2008, -0/+7You can't tell from the pic, but he is wearing four OPEC-embroidered polo shirts w/popped collars under the monkey-suit.
- Qeveren, on 06/16/2008, -2/+9Food prices are increasing due to high fuel costs, not because of ethanol.
- dafragsta, on 06/17/2008, -0/+7I'm surprised people aren't more empathetic to his situation. He flat out said that solar energy had tremendous bipartisan support and the solar energy lobby is putting the screws to people who don't need any screw application at all.
Don't cheer lobbyists. Shame on you, Digg. Solar energy: good. Lobbyists: bad. - fremontdigg, on 06/16/2008, -0/+7Solar panels are there to supplement not replace. So wouldn't it be greener to use cleaner energy during the day and use other methods during the night?
- crzdmn, on 06/16/2008, -2/+9And another instance of a politician putting personal vendettas at the front and reason in the back
- mr_wej, on 06/16/2008, -0/+6We should stop blaming the congressmen/women and start blaming the people that keep putting these morons in office! I hope someone posts the email address of every constituent in Nevada so we can mass email them... firing these incompetent politicians will be the only way to enact real change! :-)
- DougieD, on 06/16/2008, -0/+6I agree with you on nuclear, but you make yourself out to sound like a very emotional engineer whose parents were murdered by solar panels or something. I also agree that 'green' is trendy as your tone is implied. 'Green' and wholefoods isn't going to save the world; but its definitely a step in the right direction towards decreasing dependence on just two primary energy sources. In a perfect world, we'd have access to geothermal wells in places other than Greenland, but thats not the case. What strikes me as bizzare is your strong emotional bias against solar panels. You should know all the advancements they've made in the past decade, and how production cost is dropping dramatically. Implementing supplementary power smartly and cheaply in the future sounds like a good idea, elaborate more on why you so strongly disagree.
- tightscrummy, on 06/16/2008, -0/+6Good for him. If there's one place where solar is completely impractical it has to be Nevada.
- frankb00th, on 06/16/2008, -0/+6If there's one place in the US where solar energy has a chance of being efficient first, I would think Nevada would be it.
If you add the alarming rate at which the reservoir for the Hoover Dam is emptying and pretty much the bulk of your State's revenue
coming from the place that needs the most juice I would "hedge" my support of energy production.
He doesnt even address any of these issues.
Just in case the "fuel efficient " engine is tardy.
I'm not from there and correct mer if I am wrong, but this guy is not event trying to even to keep even a pretense of serving
the people who voted him in office.
Wow. - atdigg, on 06/16/2008, -1/+7Did you call for me?
- rkogurl, on 06/16/2008, -0/+6As a resident of Nevada, the state long considered the nations nuclear waste dumping ground, its good to see our elected officials looking out for the states wellbeing. We have plenty of sunshine Mr. E. We probably should use some of it.
- pintomp3, on 06/16/2008, -3/+9i guess they aren't filling his coffers fast enough.
- comedianX, on 06/16/2008, -0/+6Ok, let's refute your points, then digg you down.
"Can't produce energy at night"
True, but what you can do is produce excess energy during the day and store it for use at night. Storage could be batteries or a water tank that would produce hydro power at night.
"Can't produce energy on demand."
True, but by analyzing historical patterns of demand you can predict energy spikes throughout the year and be prepared for it.
There are downsides to every power source, but solar is not wildly impractical -- especially for Nevada. -
