- mreade, on 06/30/2009, -0/+27But that would make Ben Affleck's character in Daredevil plausible... that can't possibly be right! :P
- AmazingA, on 07/01/2009, -0/+22Am I the only one spinning around in my cube making clicking noises?
- WunderTroll, on 07/01/2009, -0/+19If this weren't on Wired I wouldn't bother clicking it.
- JYoungest1, on 07/01/2009, -0/+18You see that dolphin in the picture laughing, laughing because he knows that pretty soon they will have the upper hand.
- arizonabay, on 07/01/2009, -0/+16Wait. That wasn't a true story?
- hasslinthehoff, on 07/01/2009, -0/+16Or you could just carry a dolphin around to make the clicks for you.
- Tahoo, on 07/01/2009, -0/+16This has been around for a while!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBv79LKfMt4 - sragland, on 07/01/2009, -0/+13i actually saw a video of a young teen that was born blind that learned how to do this he could walk around his house go up and downstairs, tell which person was in front of him etc all by making clicking noises
- lololol1, on 07/01/2009, -0/+12no.
- yacks, on 07/01/2009, -0/+9So long and thanks for all the fish.
- Snoogs, on 07/01/2009, -0/+9Screw that-- I'd like to learn to see the infra-red spectrum like bugs can.
- Barackalypse, on 07/01/2009, -0/+9Is there some kind of sonic emitter I can buy instead of making the clicking noises myself? That would probably produce a much more consistent sound than any I could make.
- womweasel, on 07/01/2009, -0/+8I think that humans may practice this on a limited scale already. Some people when entering an dark room or cave of unknown proportions will calm themselves by whistling or making some other noise. Perhaps the reasons this calms people (and Scooby Doo) is because the echo provides information about the size of the room (small, medium, large) and information = less unknown = less fear of the unknown.
- Hollowpoint, on 07/01/2009, -0/+6No we don't, that's a ***** retarded statistic that someone pulled out of their ass once which is definitely not 'how much of our brain' we use at all, which is in itself a stupid idea.
- jimbo92107, on 07/01/2009, -0/+6This is why I carry a kazoo on secret missions.
- inactive, on 07/01/2009, -0/+5He was amazing, apparently he has died RIP.

- CrazedLeper, on 07/01/2009, -1/+6Get in line, buddy...but not behind me.
- Hollowpoint, on 07/01/2009, -0/+5Until someone puts something on the floor for a minute and your dad faceplants.
- hicculus, on 06/30/2009, -2/+7Use the force!
- merdok, on 07/01/2009, -0/+4God I hate how much this statistic is used, even in official capacities, we do not only use 10% of our brains, we use pretty much all of it.
The statistic came from a study which showed that the average thought used only 10% of our brains capacity, but since the 'average' thought is probably 'What shall I have for tea tonight' its none too surprising. I would imagine that trying to solve a differential equation in your head will use a lot more than 10%. - ultraseamus, on 07/01/2009, -0/+4You hate when people are amazed at how humans can be so adaptive that they can develop abilities generally reserved for super heroes? Your anger is severely misplaced, I can guarantee that everyone I meet for the rest of my life would be absolutely amazed if I learned to place objects by clicking my fingers, and I am not blind. You are so worried about people being prejudice that you have actually come back around, and are doing it yourself. Someone says "Holy crap that person has echo location!" and you hear "Holy crap, blind people are not inferior? They can even walk up and down stairs?". Just to help you out even more, most people would assume some kind of walking stick would be used, it is the alternate solution that amazes them, not the simple tasks it allows blind people to preform.
- randypanda, on 07/01/2009, -0/+3Im sure your not alone. To be honest ever since that "Echo" the amazing crime fighting dolphin game came out when I was a child, I went to the pool everyday and practiced my echo location underwater. AND YOU WOULD BE A LYING ***** IF YOU SAY YOU NEVER TRIED IT AFTER PLAYING ECHO (the amazing crime fighting dolphin).
- Wuss, on 07/01/2009, -0/+3let's doeet in the rain so i can see ur nekkid body
- lebruf, on 07/01/2009, -0/+3My roommate's younger brother had a similar condition that left him blind since he was 3. He's been doing this for years himself, and pretty much moves around his house and the neighborhood without assistance.
I would've never believed it if I hadn't seen it in action. - LonelyTylenoL, on 07/01/2009, -0/+3Well if you can get yourself a melon, you're in the clear for echolocation.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animal_echolocation - Hollowpoint, on 07/01/2009, -1/+4Interesting point.
- FXNGLAS, on 07/01/2009, -0/+3FTA: "a skill that could be particularly useful for people who work under dark or smoky conditions, like firefighters"
YES. Because a firefighter inside a burning building will be able to hear his "tongue clicks" with the mask on... not to mention the sound of the fire burning the ***** thing down. WTF do they think it's silent?!
If anyone pays for this *****, they are suckers. Use a flashlight like the rest of the world if you need to see in the dark. - NiftyG, on 07/01/2009, -0/+3If your hearing is good enough, why not?
Pretty sure years of loud rock and roll have spoiled my ability to echolocate. - Snoogs, on 07/01/2009, -0/+3***** it... I'll make a pair of glasses that emits an ultrasonic tone and interprets the rooms echo data, to be projected into my eyes... That-- or I just played way too much Metroid Prime II in my day.

I made a set myself a couple years ago, it works pretty well. - 1hrSleep, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2200hz? That's kind of low.

- milkmage, on 07/01/2009, -0/+2flashlights are useless in a smoke filled environment. ever drive with the headligths on in tule fog? you're better off without the lights. the light reflects off the smoke/fog particles - you see nothing but glare.
- Kahnza, on 07/01/2009, -0/+2Thats not a dolphin, thats a porpoise.
- Philbert, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2Are you referring to Ecco The Dolphin the video game?
- Philbert, on 07/02/2009, -0/+1Uh the link in the article goes to a video of him. Ben Underwood.
- LeviTheSmith, on 07/01/2009, -0/+1CATSCEO2 was quoting the "We Didn't Start the Flame War" video by collage humour
- milkmage, on 07/01/2009, -0/+1VDUBSKI - this kid wasn't born blind.
is this him?

here he is on the news:
http://www.metacafe.com/watch/779704/best_video_of ... - vdubski, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1Your right ultraseamus. Perhaps I am just so used to it really just doesn't amaze me.
I was more referring to just the walking around the house and stairs bit though. I have known many people over my life that just don't "get it" and say things like that to me and it really pisses me off after a while. Some people just seem to think that blind people are completely helpless, while it's really the complete opposite.
Part of it comes from how independent my dad is and how he doesn't like special treatment. I guess when I see other people act that way to him it pisses me off too. - cran, on 07/02/2009, -1/+1It was sort of a cute picture, I thought.
- anthropodeus, on 07/01/2009, -1/+1x-rays, anyone?
- Phrea, on 07/01/2009, -1/+1I'm trying to figure out what the picture of the woman next to this submission is doing there...
- wicki1, on 07/01/2009, -1/+1Will be helpful in some movies in making the scene look like real.
- kd1s, on 07/01/2009, -1/+1Interesting about the dolphins, 200hz signals. So if we could do a 200Hz device a human could probably pick up on it a higher spatial resolution too.
- gutterboy, on 07/01/2009, -5/+4Ok cool enough article, but the only reason I clicked on this article was to see if the chick in the thumbnail was cute. Is that a girl? I think it is a girl. ***** A, I need a GF.
