- vagrantwade, on 09/17/2008, -2/+72Neat article. It was liking watching the movie The Village, except it lasted only a minute and I didn't hate life after finishing it.
- jggube, on 09/17/2008, -2/+66Do you have to grow a beard to be "eco-friendly"? I'd be terrible at that.
- inactive, on 09/17/2008, -6/+67I can smell the thumbnail
- phreak79, on 09/17/2008, -1/+61Wonder how long before they'll be taxed for something or other?
- biological, on 09/17/2008, -1/+59"When the pilot reported back, officials were unable to find any records, let alone planning permission, for the mystery hillside village surrounded by trees and bushes. They insisted the grass-covered buildings should be demolished."
because when i find a village i did not know about beforehand, i insist on its demolition.
that reminds me, i have des moines to conquer - dzneill, on 09/17/2008, -1/+53I wonder how much money was wasted on trying to get rid of these people.
- Ninh, on 09/17/2008, -0/+41And if they hadn't shunned stinger missiles, they'd live undiscovered ever after.
- ironhide, on 09/17/2008, -3/+32Why should the government involve themselves in what people build on their own property that harms no one?
- sockpuppets, on 09/17/2008, -0/+27Then I don't wanna be right.
- mchisari, on 09/17/2008, -11/+37
6,000,000,000 people can't live like this in a sustainable way. Great for them, but this is not a solution that scales. - sockpuppets, on 09/17/2008, -3/+26If you're monogamous with the same sheep for 10 years you're probably not going to catch any STDs.
- scythe33, on 09/17/2008, -2/+25Well, so much for that village. Onwards! There are more peaceful communities to ruin out there!
- mchisari, on 09/17/2008, -4/+26"when the cheap oil runs out, the 6 billion will drop to around 1.5 - 2 billion"
The sun dumps 8000x more energy than we use every year. Wind provides 18x more than we use.
You're extremely short-sighted. - Sp0rAdiC, on 09/17/2008, -2/+24I bet they're in better physical condition and have a better diet than most people that live normally. They'll probably live longer healthier lives since they're not ingesting chemicals all the time and probably live a pretty stress free lifestyle compared to the norm.
- Testiculese, on 09/17/2008, -7/+28How pathetic is the government to screw with these people. What blatant arrogance. ***** you, government.
- kwasmosis, on 09/17/2008, -11/+32Um, so your saying Amish is the way to go.
Log off now, I never want to see you on digg again. Please submit to your beliefs, if you don't, you my friend are 'lame'. - Sp0rAdiC, on 09/17/2008, -3/+24Since when can you compare a grass hut to a power plant?
- Sherman901, on 09/17/2008, -2/+21sounds more like masturbation
- wunksta, on 09/17/2008, -1/+18why is it that (insert any group here) believe that the law doesn't apply to them?
you think corporations and governments are inherently moral and law abiding?
people are people dude - daveluke1, on 09/17/2008, -0/+16This is awesome.. Its not even like they isolate themselves... Its just like camping to the extreme!!!...
- dumass4u, on 09/17/2008, -3/+18sweet, can I join?
- IphtashuFitz, on 09/17/2008, -1/+16It's not that they believe the law doesn't apply. It's just that they're ignorant (I don't mean that in a negative way) about the law. There are so many legalities about every aspect of modern day living that it's absurd. It sounds like these guys bought some farmland and started building their own private commune on it. They were simply unaware that even private structures built on their private land had to comply with various local/national laws.
Hell, an organization I'm involved with is doing a major renovation on a historical building that hasn't been touched in 30 years. The state & federal regulations are mindboggling, right down to the distance certain walls can extend, the diameter of water pipes, the capacity of a rainwater drainage system and size of the drains, the pitch of handicapped ramps, etc. Unless you know & work with various building related laws & regulations on a regular basis there's no way you can be familiar with them all. - Samurai77, on 09/17/2008, -2/+166 Billion can't live in any way on this planet sustainably.
- SpectreFire, on 09/17/2008, -1/+14Too much.
- oldhick, on 09/17/2008, -1/+14If the government can regulate it, tax it, and take it at will, its the "nation's property".
- wunksta, on 09/17/2008, -1/+12yeah, thats why they were hiding. they were forcing us to all live like them, eh?
- Sherman901, on 09/17/2008, -1/+12orrrrrrrrrr
it is about personal choice and responsibility? stop trying to make something cool into a negative thing, cynic - EtherGnat, on 09/17/2008, -0/+11But jawbreakerjon seems to be under the misconception that they want to be stone age. Wanting to be sustainable is by no means tantamount to wanting to give up all of life's conveniences.
- Testiculese, on 09/17/2008, -0/+11Wasn't their point or intention.
- PabloMac, on 09/17/2008, -0/+11Wait until after you hit puberty.
- jessehadden, on 09/17/2008, -0/+10Given the universe's propensity towards irony, the amount spent is probably roughly equal to the cumulative amount of resources that were conserved by this village.
- dersktic, on 09/17/2008, -1/+11YES - You also have to have at least 3 inches of pubic hair.
- omgwtflawl, on 09/17/2008, -0/+9What if they weren't terrorists, but actually secret werewolves from the future?
- arjie, on 09/17/2008, -0/+9How about this house? http://www.simondale.net/house/build.htm
- Bloodwine, on 09/17/2008, -1/+10I was pretty sure us landowners were just leasing the land from the government (in a sense). If they really want it, they'll get it. In that sense, nobody except the government owns land in the U.S.
- frostbyt, on 09/17/2008, -0/+9My precious!!!
- balibones, on 09/17/2008, -3/+11It would be of people stopped breeding. Every time I see a family with five, six, seven or more kids I want to punch the parents in the face. To me that's worse than a soccer mom driving an H1 all by herself while running a red light, sipping a latte and talking on her cell phone.
- Dereliction, on 09/17/2008, -0/+8Does anyone know the website addy for this group of people (as per the article)? I'm curious to read how and what solutions they came up with to the more major problems they encountered along the way, in terms of living ecologically sound.
P.S. ***** governments ... just gotta try and put their hands into every cookie jar they can find. Who is surprised? - Suricou, on 09/17/2008, -1/+9One minor problem: It doesn't exist.
- NotYourProdigy, on 09/17/2008, -1/+9I'd live there. And if anyone calls me a 'hippie' because of this, I won't do anything but thank you for your opinion.
- geneikillua, on 09/17/2008, -1/+9What are you talking about? This was in the UK, and the US allows people to live in retrograde communes. Ever hear of the Amish?
- DoctorQuigley, on 09/17/2008, -1/+8As far as the state is concerned, "might makes right". As far as I'm concerned, the state can go **** itself.
Only by accepting the arbitrary rule by a group which claims to have the right to use violence against anyone that violates its interests could we arrive at the absurd situation in which people who are peacefully living an eco-friendly lifestyle have to fight tooth and nail in a courtroom to keep their homes from being demolished for no apparent reason. - balibones, on 09/17/2008, -1/+8Why do people think technology and sustainability are mutually exclusive? So what if they watch DVDs. So what if they use solar panels. Nobody said they were trying to be cavemen. I guarantee, DVD or no DVD, these people will have less of an environmental impact on this earth in three decades than many of us will in a single month.
- Junior612, on 09/17/2008, -6/+13The Village IRL
- wunksta, on 09/17/2008, -2/+9I CANT BELIEVE PEOPLE WANT ME TO STOP POLLUTING! IM A GOD DAMN AMERICAN!
- bigtoes, on 10/16/2008, -0/+7It's not like some lost tribe . Some people just renovated a farm . It says the kids had part time jobs . If you look at the satellite image you can see buildings & roads all around that place . They make it seem like the pilot was going over the Amazonian part of Wales . If this was so wild and crazy it seems that the solar technicians or some cable man would have told someone .
- Key2gb, on 09/17/2008, -2/+9ridiculous that the first thing people thought of upon seeing this is how it negatively affects them and therefore why it should be demolished
- vilago, on 09/17/2008, -1/+8mine needs to be clipped
- balibones, on 09/17/2008, -0/+6Nobody said they wanted to "do it hardcore". In fact, they said they lead pretty normal lives - kids watching DVDs and parents working on their home-based business. You don't have to be a caveman to be sustainable. The only thing that's going to save this planet is if we embrace technology that helps us live modern lives without ruining the environment, and do away with technology that harms the environment. Modern living and sustainability are not mutually exclusive concepts!
- tschau, on 09/17/2008, -0/+6this is in Wales, by the way.
