- Hetman, on 06/24/2009, -1/+9I am happy they are doing this. However I hope they do not change its color like they said they planned on doing. The hancock and the sears tower stand out very well because of there black color. Changing it to look more like trump tower is just going a little to far if you ask me.
- kolding, on 06/24/2009, -3/+113,600 new jobs! Going green seems to be the new dynamo of the economy.
- Snoogs, on 06/24/2009, -1/+7Hell yeah Chicago! Now if you can get the CTA to operate under its own budget, I'd be thrilled. Hopefully this will lead the way for the rest of the city to go green
- MargotCross, on 06/24/2009, -2/+8thats quite an endorsement for sustainable building!
- saikyan, on 06/24/2009, -0/+4Sears is a company, but the tower sharing its name has evolved into an independent landmark.
It would be like renaming the Golden Gate Bridge to "Intel Bridge" or some equivalent corporate pandering.
It will be harder for them to change people's minds than it was for Comisky park, because it's so visible without requiring any media coverage. You can see the Sears Tower on a clear day from 20+ miles away. - Hetman, on 06/24/2009, -1/+5The olympics are not here that long. Meeting some more foreigners is not going to kill you.
- ToRoE, on 06/24/2009, -1/+5settle down boozer, having the olymipics, is supposed to give us a reason to FIX all that... (whether it does or not is another story.)
- yehaww, on 06/24/2009, -1/+4That's great. I'm sure people will come on here complaining about green retrofitting being a waste of time and money, but I for one am always excited to hear about large scale projects like this.
- Chmura, on 06/24/2009, -0/+2I'm pretty sure they haven't changed the name yet.
- Hetman, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1If you did not notice housing prices are falling. They are actually pretty cheap right now. They have been overpriced for a long time. That is what happens when anyone who makes 30k a year can get a loan to buy a 1/4 million dollar home.
- eliseville, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1Public transportation throughout the world depens on public funding. The higher you raise the fares the fewer people actually use it. But I also hope the visibility of this project helps people refocus on what is possible.
- hondaman, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1Who is paying for this remodel?
- WorldLeader, on 06/24/2009, -2/+3For being in a recession, the city of Chicago has been adding quite a few skyscrapers lately.
I approve! - ToRoE, on 06/24/2009, -1/+2yeah, I call BS. Yes the sears tower's getting a little old and could use a re-fresh, but lots of 'bits' in that article do not add up.
$350 mil. seems like a hell of a lot. In this market, you could buy a 50 story hotel.
we do not need anymore hotel rooms here, we are at 60% capacity YTD.
employ 3,600? is that 3,600 part-timers, as in only working 15 hours a week. that number is pretty high?
Where are thy putting these wind turbines? and I would be there is about 1,000 square feet of roof space available for this 'green area'.
(and I can see the tower right now... ) - DreKor, on 06/24/2009, -1/+2Stop whining. If somebody can get a cheaper product that fits their needs somewhere else, good for them.
- eliseville, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1I think it may mean something like the windmills don't kill birds and bats since scientific/ecological studies show that can be a big problem if not especially avoided.
- eliseville, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1boozedrinker needs to recognize public vs private spending. I think Sears will be using private funding and may improve your city. The CTA should be getting taxpayer funding. You complain of over-stuffed traincars, but if fares are raised ridership will go down and they'll cut routes. Get your politicians to raise income taxes to buy more cars and help pay for drivers/maintenance.
- DreKor, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1I shopped around for my house, my insurance, my food, my car, and everything else I buy. Why don't you?
- wakingrufus, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1this guy has a valid point, which is that the city of chicago is horribly mismanaged, teeming with corruption, and having major budget issues. these things need to be fixed.
king daley also just promised that the city will take all financial responsibility for the Olympics to the Olympics committee if the olympics fails financially. - eliseville, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1True "Green Roofs" are green with living plants. They save on cooling/heating, water run-off and provide cool garden space. I think it helps to have a flatter roof, so A-frames don't work so well.
- Bowserflash567, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1Sweet the greener my home city of Chicago can get the better.
- inactive, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1I can at least answer the wind turbine part, in that they just toss them on the roofs. They don't look like massive fans, more like small aluminum spirals. They are sprouting up all over the city if you look for them, they are specially designed for use on city buildings.
- cubicledrone, on 06/25/2009, -0/+0"Stop whining" sounds real bright until you have bills to pay. Where can we get cheaper houses? Oh wait, you mean it's only a free market for the rich? Bew hew?
- Hetman, on 06/24/2009, -1/+1Obviously the government s/ Not the private business that bought it.
- ArmenTamzarian, on 06/24/2009, -2/+2whatyoutalking'bout, willis?
- Mikey129, on 06/25/2009, -1/+1"Third New Deal"
- HolemCross, on 06/24/2009, -1/+1That's pretty neat. I haven't been up to the top deck in a while, but I know there's a crap load of offices jammed in there. This green stuff could do wonders there. As for the green roofs part, I highly doubt it deals with turning any part of the building the color green. They already change the color of the antenna with lights.
- boozedrinker, on 06/24/2009, -6/+5***** THIS. I live in Chicago and these ***** want the Olympics here but they can't even get people to work on a daily basis. We have a public transportation system that is choking, and starving for cash and this is what they spend the ***** money on?
They have the nerve to tell Chicagoans that bringing the Olympics here is a good thing, but all I see are overflowing trains during a NORMAL workday - I couldn't even imagine if the public transportation had to take 2 million more people around. People need to get off this green ***** until real problems are fixed. Instead they do stupid ***** like this and we, the travelers, have to foot the bill in ***** fair hikes. I'm so sick of this hippy green ***** that's going on lately when bigger problems exist. Just like Obama spending over a quarter of a billion ***** dollars WE DON'T HAVE to buy over 14,000 "green" vehicles for the government. - shibatoman, on 06/24/2009, -2/+1Why do some people CAPITALIZE words RANDOMLY while spewing their venom?
-block north on Wacker - askantik, on 06/24/2009, -2/+1...
So we have "eco-friendly," "green," and now... "bio-friendly"? This project sounds pretty cool, but I want to know what exactly does "bio-friendly" mean? Why can't we stick with one word: moving towards sustainability? After all, that's what all those things mean, except they don't sound as "gimmicky." - GnomeProfit, on 06/24/2009, -6/+4What is this Sears Tower you speak of?
I only know the Willis Tower
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sears_tower - bakedpajamas, on 06/24/2009, -3/+1The twin towers had 1 years worth of "Elevator Work" done just prior to 9-11. So if the Sears Tower comes tumbling down ,at free fall speeds, just as the work is finished, I would say it's just coincidence.
- anthropodeus, on 06/24/2009, -4/+2to which clause does the sarcasm apply? if it is the first, you should have written "/s", not "s/".
also, /s comes from </s>, which is derived from html. <s/> means nothing. if the following content contains sarcasm, <s> would be the logical code. - mGARANDEUR1, on 06/24/2009, -6/+1Great. The grass growing on the roof will cause it to rot faster, costing more money and building supplies.
- cubicledrone, on 06/24/2009, -9/+1They didn't mention the $12 billion to ship the building to "Anywhere but America(tm)" to get the actual work done. Can't have Americans employed you know.
