- pedigreechump6, on 04/29/2009, -2/+153I love my fish but I'd be happy to switch to another fish or cut down entirely if it means I can still enjoy cod and chips when im 80
- freshgrease, on 04/29/2009, -0/+99The Japanese will not be happy.
- inactive, on 04/29/2009, -3/+93We're running low on Sea Kittens?
- inactive, on 04/29/2009, -6/+76Sadly, if this does happen, there will be people who will pay big money to get the fish, thus creating a "fish black market"
- Sucka27, on 04/29/2009, -2/+68Sounds like an easy thing to enforce.
/s - weatherlsp, on 04/29/2009, -3/+49Nah, they'll just do it anyway and call it scientific research.
- Homerr, on 04/29/2009, -11/+52Time for world population controls. Sorry government haters, but left to our own devices we'll destroy this planet and ourselves.
- pingpants, on 04/29/2009, -4/+31An awe-inspiring effort to try and organize.
- carbonetc, on 04/29/2009, -1/+26Give a man a fish and you've fed him for a day.
Teach a man to fish and you've fed him for a lifetime.
Smack a man when he starts gorging himself like a pig and you've fed his children and grandchildren too. - Bhima, on 04/29/2009, -2/+27I don't think it's impossible to sustainably farm fish... so this ban would put a lot of pressure on developing sustainable aquaculture practices... which is the only way either of us is going enjoy either cod & chips or sushi when we're 80.
- haastyle, on 04/29/2009, -7/+31This will never happen
- Dumbledorito, on 04/29/2009, -1/+23Somehow, I don't think the "fish black market" will have access to those mammoth fish trawlers that effectively strip-mine the water of everything organic as they pass.
- StaticThunder, on 04/29/2009, -5/+26Of all the things happening in the world, the state of the oceans makes me the saddest.
- ArtificialAnus, on 04/29/2009, -3/+24Low on fish?
Club more seals!
(...preferably with clubs made out of pigs) - MixMastaKooz, on 04/29/2009, -0/+17Actually, there was a 6 (4 if you count our involvement) year moratorium on industrial fishing last century: it was called World War 2. Tuna and other fishing stocks went way up: who the hell wanted to fish in the deep sea when you could be boarding or torpedoed...
- toshimonkey, on 04/29/2009, -1/+18Uh, fish and chips? Delicious.
- Jawbone54, on 04/29/2009, -0/+16What about the fishing industries in some of the under-developed nations of the world?
Regulation is the key; we just haven't figured out a way to enforce it yet. Fishing for sharks solely for their fins (then dumping the immobile, still-living bodies into the ocean to die) is a huge industry that still hasn't been properly tackled by the major nations of the world. - sodade, on 04/29/2009, -3/+19Seriously. It is one thing to overpopulate and force me to foot the bill for your kids, but ***** with my sushi supply? That means ***** war.
- fury420, on 04/29/2009, -0/+14there are a wide variety of fish that are referred to as "cod", many are quite delicious. it really does depend on the species, source, freshness, etc...
there is a huge difference between atlantic cod, ling cod, and black cod for example - JasonCox, on 04/29/2009, -0/+14I blame Sea Puppies.
- inactive, on 04/29/2009, -1/+14So we can destroy all the fish in 2/3 of the oceans?
- Homerr, on 04/29/2009, -2/+15The Japanese won't be happy with a zero fish diet because they are all extinct.
- CaptainPlanet, on 04/29/2009, -1/+12the fish black market already exists, its huge and we are all apart of it. 33% of the fish caught world wide come from illegal pirate fishing operations. almost all grocery stores have no way of telling whether the fish they sell is pirate or illegal. huge reforms are needed in fisheries management.
- inactive, on 04/29/2009, -2/+13If we don't do something about overfishing people will starve, numbnuts. What are they gonna eat when all the fish are gone?
- sodade, on 04/29/2009, -4/+15The real cause is too many ***** people, not being omnivorous. If I had to choose between eating tasty meat and being able to support a larger population that is forced to be vegetarians, guess which one I'd choose. What I don't get is why the ***** would anyone choose option 2?
- fury420, on 04/29/2009, -0/+11sounds like a great idea, however people really like to eat fish, so it seems like a tough sell.
we need more fish farming, preferably closed systems located on land, to stop the devastating effects of traditional ocean-based fish farming on local fish populations, while still supplying fish - kilroyy, on 04/29/2009, -9/+20Yet another item in the List of Things That Will Never Happen.
- Zomgondo, on 04/30/2009, -2/+12When fish is outlawed, only outlaws will have fish.
- Maxjan, on 04/29/2009, -0/+10what about a blackfish market?
- JiveRabbit, on 04/29/2009, -3/+12Racist
- SocialPoison, on 04/29/2009, -2/+11Don't mistake cynicism for apathy.
- EtherGnat, on 04/29/2009, -0/+9"if everyone was a vegetarian there would more than likely be shortages of those foods"
Meat is hugely inefficient. One estimate I've seen is that it takes 20 lbs of corn to "create" one pound of beef. That number may be too high (and other meats such as pork and chicken are more efficient) but it's still far more wasteful than a vegetarian diet. And of course feed isn't the only resource used in raising livestock.
That being said I could really go for a BLT right now. - Midtowner, on 04/29/2009, -1/+9It won't happen. Responsible countries would probably sign onto the deal but fishing corporations would just relocate their assets to countries which lack the ability to enforce the law.
This'd be a completely unenforceable mandate and it would only serve to ship more 1st world jobs out to 3rd world countries. - catalysis, on 04/30/2009, -0/+8http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fraction_(mathematics ...
- XZanatos, on 04/29/2009, -0/+8With guns.
- StaticThunder, on 04/29/2009, -0/+8"Also, I'd think agrarian societies would still have pigs around even if we weren't eating them."
Why? They're useless for anything but destroying farm land and eating. There's no market for pig milk or pig eggs, and a pig can't pull a plow.
Swine flu is almost certainly a consequence of farms with pigs for food in close proximity to humans. Of course, it all could have been avoided if Mexican authorities had acted more quickly. - sodade, on 04/29/2009, -0/+8"Too many people?
Are you insane?"
WTF? Isn't it pretty obvious that a farmed out ocean is a direct result of too many ***** people? - fullzer0, on 04/29/2009, -0/+7What do You Mean Blackfish market?
- spongya77, on 04/30/2009, -0/+7That's it!! You got the answer! Arm Greenpeace with Russian attack subs!
- govsucks, on 04/29/2009, -6/+13Heres to hoping that it is your wife that is forcibly given an abortion by government first.
- asskicker32, on 04/29/2009, -0/+7I like tilapia. Its a nice, versatile, sustainable, flaky and flavorful fish.
- thesonofdarwin, on 04/29/2009, -0/+71. 1,001 Low-Fat Vegetarian Recipes (Sue Spitler)
2. How to Cook Everything Vegetarian (Mark Bittman)
3. Veganomicon - The Ultimate Vegan Cookbook (Moskowitz & Romero)
1 is more for fancy dishes that take forever to prepare. 2 and 3 offer more daily meal recipes and also meet your requirement for not tasting like *****. 2 offers the best explanations on how to prepare and use the uncommon ingredients used in vegetarian recipes and would be my recommendation out of the three.
Honestly though, the best thing to do is experiment on your own. I've been cooking my own vegetarian meals since I was 14 and diet variety is key. Lately I've been experimenting with a vegan lifestyle and, although I've been off dairy easily for a few months now, it's much more difficult to avoid eggs. - inactive, on 04/29/2009, -1/+7I think the fact that people really like to eat fish is a major selling point here. Either we do something now, or there won't be any fish left to eat.
- dafragsta, on 04/29/2009, -0/+6Well, that does it, the dolphins are gonna say goodbye now and fly off into the sunset.
- hogfoot, on 04/29/2009, -0/+6ummm...you need fish to feed the salmon.
- Pssdoff, on 04/29/2009, -1/+7I took the free market approach and just quit buying seafood altogether. Less demand = less overfishing. On the plus side, I'm most certainly consuming less mercury now...
- imikedaman, on 04/29/2009, -0/+6Once you're done with that 2/3 you can just wait for the fish in the banned areas to swim over.
- nwogoldberg99, on 04/29/2009, -1/+7@ bratterscan:
Try replacing your statement, "...for saying things not grammatically correct?" with "...for saying things which are not grammatically correct?"
