Scientists - Would you bet your own money on Global warming?
crikey.com.au — "It's the most pure, untarnished and open market alive. Everyone's an expert. Mums and dads might end up knowing more than the meteorological weather experts," says Centrebet's Neil Evans. Or put another way, no-one's really an expert either – and nothing makes a betting house happier.

- greenfyre, on 07/20/2008, -1/+16Actually climatologist James Annan offered to bet climate skeptics $$$ on their claims about climate. Michaels, Jaworowski, Corbyn, Ebell, Kininmonth, Mashnich and Idso all refused and Lindzen wanted 50:1 Odds - which gives you some idea of how much faith they have in what they say.
The Russians Galina Mashnich and Vladimir Bashkirtsev did take him up for $10,000, but no other takers.
He is still looking though, so if any Deniers feel like losing their house or retirement fund you can get in touch with him.

- greenfyre, on 07/20/2008, -1/+6Damn, actually forgot I'd already posted about Annan http://digg.com/environment/Betting_on_Climate_Cha ...
- esteskid, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1I want me some of that extinct species action
- greenfyre, on 07/20/2008, -1/+3What odds on humans? Right now they look like a long shot to survive
- floatingorb, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1Yea, but that's not because of the 'climate change' so much.
{Today will be partly cloudy with a 40% chance of scattered flashes of light, winds variable to 900 mph, and temps to 10 million F.} - greenfyre, on 07/21/2008, -1/+3fo, either the science or take it to the religion section (you're the one who flashed credential, so don't blame me if you get held to that standard)
- floatingorb, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1Gluhhhh? Which is the bigger threat, and especially for the immediate future of mankind? Throwing nukes around absolutely everywhere ("a WW2 every second, for the length of a lazy afternoon" -- Carl Sagan) or a little bit of 'change'?
Sagan discusses nuclear war:
http://digg.com/world_news/Carl_Sagan_discusses_nu ... - floatingorb, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1p.s. I redact my claimed 'credential' and will make sure to display more conventional aspects of myself if ever *flashing* something! -- It's meaningless for educating anyone about anything that will actually matter with stuff I know to be bad but they will do it anyways. Besides, no one likes an *I told you so*.
- greenfyre, on 07/21/2008, -1/+2OK, nuclear war is trumps, but as far as I know we have not actually got anything in the pipe at the moment,
whereas the climate change solution train is pulling out of the station and we have very little margin to catch it
as for redacting, sorry dude, you forgot to take the 5th and we got it all on tape ;-) - floatingorb, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1"at the moment"
But they are there ----
well we all go down
to our caverns underground
and in our backyard caves
we'd hear the sirens sound
and we took it very well
when then black rains fell
when the dust came down around us
we were safe and sound
it was baby needs shoes
the pta and barbeques
and it was two-handed touch
out on the white house lawn
and we were nobody's fools
fillin' in the swimming pools
we poured concrete and steel
when the neighbors had gone
now we all live here together
yes we all live here as one
now we all share the comforts of a hole in the ground
and we all remember livin' in the sun
here in the shelter
we heard nuclear freeze
we heard first-strike strategies
we heard how to pay the taxman
when the big one falls
we heard good guys and bad guys
we heard little lies and big lies
about who comes out the winners
and it's not that bad at all
{BUT} when a madman gets a gun
he's gonna point it at someone
if it's up in texas tower
or over there across the pond
and if you step on his pride
or if he hurts somewhere inside
he might let one fly
when his nerves are gone
now we all live here together
yes we all live here as one
now we all share the comforts of a hole in the ground
and we all remember livin' in the sun
here in the shelter -- Planet P

- floatingorb, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1I would *bet* that we will get an oppressive tax on the output of carbon and that this won't change anything because corporations and governments are not going to scrap their trillion-dollar production infrastructure (coal) and industry still needs more and more energy. They will find a way to pass the cost along to the 'little guy' (as with all taxes). Some people believe that is, in fact, the plan -- to use the restrictions as just another control structure to help further tyranny.
There needs to be more emphisis and incentive to make available clean energy. Just taxing carbon is not the answer. - MoniqueMoniCat, on 07/22/2008, -1/+1I agree with shearyadi who said on 07/20/2008 "Crazy! People betting on environment and animal extinction, oh dear..."
It is also sad to see the entire USA obsessing on one aspect of the environment too, when all day long chickens are bashed into cement walls, wings and legs torn off whilest they're alive, and cows are electrocuted and pigs' ears are cut with scissors whilest they scream in horror and agony, all of which arrives to our meat section in the supermarket as diseased and unhealthy for human consumption. Laws are not followed and no one checks into this because they know what a million dollar industry it is.
And THIS is our meat industry? This is what we are eating? And then they want to offer us healthcare? For what, to fix illness caused by eating murdered and strangled animals? Even the bible forbids eating animals that were murdered or strangled or killed by wild animals. And by the way it also says not to eat PIGS they are UNCLEAN, did you know the cells normally found in a clean animal's colon are not only found in the pig's colon BUT ARE FOUND ARE ALL THROUGHOUT A PIG'S BODY INCLUDING THEIR MUSCLES? Yes, that is why pigs are not fit for human consumption. So keep eating filth and keep going to the doctor?
Folks, as long as we eat diseased meat products we are going to continue to have no healthcare in this country, yet ANOTHER FRAUD: healthcare for all. More like SICK CARE FOR ALL.
I don't believe any of the politicians give a shi* about global warming or any other environmental conservation on this planet. All any of them care about is MONEY and power and the fact that they are involved in global warming tells me there's a hidden agenda from making it one of their concerns. Whether there is truth to it or not, you can best bet they won't get anything done about it, oh sure, they use us environmentalists and animal people to fuel the passion needed to mask their real intentions.
Do you REALLY believe that Nancy Prosac Pelosi or Barak O'Drama give a shi* about the animals or about the environment? If you do, you need to do much more research on really what actually the polititicans are trying to do. IF they cared they wouldn't be the biggest sponsors of the Naked Empress Pharmacutical Drug companies who sponsor fake experiments and fraudulent science called VIVISECTION and that's just on the LEFT folks.
But mark my words, it AIN'T TO HELP ANIMALS OR THE ENVIRONMENT.
The politicians are just USING US TO GET THEIR AGENDA THROUGH.
They are liars and there is no truth in them.
It's just another way they are using animals for profit ONCE AGAIN.
