San Francisco Mulls Fines for Leaving Lights on at Night
thedailygreen.com — The first-in-the-nation rule would impose the commonsense energy-saving practice in a draconian way, with fines of $50 to $250 per offense, depending on the frequency of the problem.

- socialpyramid, on 03/26/2008, -3/+13I've always found it maddening that so many skyscrapers and offices leave their lights blazing all night.
- BigManOnCampus, on 03/26/2008, -2/+4Relax, they often dont. It's the cleaning people and security people at night who are walking around doing things. Personally I would have a problem working as a cleaning person in a hi-rise and have to see dark rooms everywhere I went
- DeskFlyer, on 03/27/2008, -0/+5Not everyone has a 9-5 day job either.
- doctechnical, on 03/27/2008, -0/+4Perhaps you should get a hobby and learn to relax.
- ltchimpo, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1And vote as a freedom loving patriotic American, not as an ignorant emotionally fueled slave to social trends. We must never forget what this country stands for. And those things don't change with time. The passage of time does present different obstacles that can be addressed as we reach them, but the freedom to do what you please when you please must never change. We are independant creatures and must stay that way less we become slaves.
And I can't think of anything worse than placing my life in the hands of an idiot. When it comes to what I choose to do with my life, everyone is an idiot. My heart beat, my body, my time, my past, my present, my future. Death to those that would take it.

- crazydiode, on 03/26/2008, -1/+6if this gets to VA, the first office to be fined would be the Capital One building right off 495. A pure waste of energy.
- watamelon03, on 03/26/2008, -0/+9Would these rules only apply to businesses and skyscrapers? Or would they also be extended to homes as well?
- doctechnical, on 03/27/2008, -0/+3Take a guess. The term "slippery slope" comes to mind.

- WiseWeasel, on 03/26/2008, -10/+3Looks like SF is hard up for cash... With the relatively high concentration of hippies, look for a tax on SUVs, cigarettes, non-organic anything, and Italian suits any day now.
- Nerve55, on 03/27/2008, -0/+5It must be hard to count to see which floor the lights are on!
- queenmoweeny, on 03/27/2008, -1/+2I think there should be fines... the money a lot of companies and homeowners would save
- MikeL123, on 03/27/2008, -2/+7If this law gets passed, the boogie man has already won.
- a6n28f, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2Would that prompt a War on Boogies?
- lickmylovepump, on 03/27/2008, -6/+3That's friggin' gay.
- PatNolan, on 03/27/2008, -1/+4Who is going to fine the city? The mayor's office light tends to be on more than it is off, isn't it?
- DEaDIRiS, on 03/27/2008, -0/+4Issuing fines is the LAZIEST form of legislation. How about putting together a package of incentives to encourage companies to conserve.
- ltchimpo, on 03/27/2008, -2/+5Don't some people work late? Don't some places work third shifts? Don't we live in a land of freedom where people pay energy companies for electricity to use as they please. when they please? Who are they the say that there is a "bedtime", who are they to say "lights out"? I'll answer that: wardens. That's who says. Wardens that would press people into boxes at night, to report to work the next day, so they can purchase things on the weekend, so the political system keeps churning. Why? What is the ultimate goal of the unending government churn?
Power. That's what. Why spend time solving problems. When the problems are solved your niche ability is used. You're done. But if you dedicate your time to staying in power, by say, talking about a never arriving future where, through bloated government programs, politicians and the web of characters that attach themselves to a candidate can maintain a strange hold over people.
Example 1: I am a politician. I create Feverplace. A government program that insures all tax payers have access to their services. So, let's start off: we need an office staff of say 20 people. We'll need people to run our offices in other counties. Okay, how about printed materials. Hmm, okay, we'll need couriers, oh and office space, utilities, we'll need committees, chairs, coffee machines. We will buy it all with tax dollars. And all those people we employ, and everyone that is dependant upon them and of voting age will vote for me. Why? Because I created thier place of work. I control the amount of funding that runs through that place. I am effectively expanding my voter support base by creating people dependant on the government.
One day you and I are going to wake up. Pull out the photo album, and the world we will see in the pictures will be so far and away different from the world we now live in. Our notion of freedom, democracy, of republic as we know it will be long gone. We won't depend on our own paychecks, rather what the state gives us to live on in exchange for work. There is this socialist movement going on in the States that must be stopped! - coffee200am, on 03/27/2008, -3/+1Not only lights...but pop vending machines, snack vending machines...Then there's the problem of those nasty power plants. They should be turned off for at least one to two hours a day...to begin with. Only Hospitals and Government buildings should have electricity during those hours supplied by generators that run off used cooking oil and solar. They need to teach the IndustialMilitaryBushGlobalWarmingComplex a lesson!
- noseeme, on 03/27/2008, -2/+2Not a bad idea. On this scale, it is worth it.
- ltchimpo, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1Thank you president of electricity. Comments like this can be summed up with the "Digg This: or "Bury it" buttom. Hahah, sorry. I am a jerk.
- xshepx, on 03/27/2008, -0/+3Wouldn't it make more sense to conserve with the lights off during daylight instead?
- SteelChicken, on 03/27/2008, -3/+3Dont you love liberal wankers? They force you to tolerate gay parades, non-traditional marriages, and love to kick out military recruiters, but heaven help you if you leave your ***** light on.
- minoss, on 03/27/2008, -1/+2Aren't they already paying a "fine" by actually paying for the electricity? This is stupid. People do work at night too. Maybe we should just fine or ban that too.
- MajorJJH, on 03/28/2008, -0/+2I've always found it frustrating that massive buildings and high-rises just leave their lights on during the night... tell me, how long is that janitor working?
