- inactive, on 02/01/2008, -22/+118If you've ever been stuck in London on the same street with an SUV then you'd agree with me that 50 bucks is not really enough. These guys are not only polluting the city, they're making it a horrible place to live in.
- Hermiod, on 02/01/2008, -5/+70This has largely come about as a result of extending the Congestion Charge zone in to Chelsea and Fulham where hundreds of mothers drive their children to school every day. The result is, effectively, something akin to a German Panzer division moving towards the area's schools at 8:00am every morning - the cars they drive are certainly big enough to be called Tanks.
These people were given fair warning that this was coming when Livingstone won the last Mayoral election. - inactive, on 02/01/2008, -18/+76i can't think of any reason someone would drive an SUV in the middle of london. If you feel the need to drive your compensation mobile down oxford street, you can deservedly pay 25 pounds.
- inactive, on 02/01/2008, -11/+52My problem with SUVs isn't so much their fuel economy, but how they block the ***** view in front of me. Did any ***** SUV owner ever ask themselves the question before they bought their giant mechanical pig mobile how it would affect other drivers when they are on the road? ***** SUV drivers (and the ones with the biggest SUVs) are the slowest most pain in the ass drivers around. They remind me of fat ass people who have a hard time walking. Me in my lil 4 cylinder car just zips on right past them usually with me pointing the finger at them (usually a dumb soccer mom).
- sicc, on 02/01/2008, -17/+57LOL I Agree, not sure what use 4 x 4 power and Bull Bars are on Primrose Hill.. It's a safty issue as well with the built up areas and the bull bars at a childs head hight. Not a fan, ill stick with a Hot Hatches :)
Sicc - frem001, on 02/01/2008, -2/+39Oxford and Regent street need to be pedestrianized, it's impossible to walk at a decent speed through all the tourists. I don't know why people bother to drive in london, it's really slow!
- inactive, on 02/01/2008, -3/+36When did Ken start charging in dollars?
- ghm101, on 02/01/2008, -1/+34I haven't driven up to central London for years - because of the congestion charge, the cost of car parking and the time it takes for me to get anywhere by car in London.
I just find it easier, cheaper and less stressful to take the train and the tube. - inactive, on 02/01/2008, -3/+33I don't understand a one word you just said.
- signal15, on 02/01/2008, -2/+29The SUV isn't useless. However, it is unnecessary for most of the people driving them.
They make plenty of sense if you haul things around all of the time, tow trailers or boats, or regularly need 4WD. I don't need one at this point in my life, and I get irritated when I see some stupid blonde bitch in an Escalade barrelling down the road on her phone. - NJank, on 02/01/2008, -3/+25ok, then let's rephrase: "the most misused vehicle created by man"
- inactive, on 02/01/2008, -1/+22so is every other embassy. most diplomats appear to be major douche bags. Remember the 300,000 in parking tickets in New York embassys didn't pay? It's one of the pluses of being a diplomat that makes everyone else hate you.
- sonaboy, on 02/01/2008, -4/+25They should just call it what it actually is - A Vanity Tax.
and yes, i think it's a great idea. - inactive, on 02/01/2008, -12/+31good ole pos3r, you are truly a scared little jerk.
oh ekk the muslims are here! oh there are some black people in my neighborhood!! oh my is that a jew walking a dog! time to move! stop being a racist fear mongering bushie.
you make me wish the 30 percent of this country who think like you should be shipped over to the middle east to learn the hard way that they are people too. you stupid simp... go out and win a darwin award! - chris9902, on 02/01/2008, -11/+30If you are driving a Chelsea Tractor then you deserve to be fined (and beaten?).
- Alpione, on 02/01/2008, -9/+28How are they useless? They carry a lot, can go offroad, etc... The fact that you don't like them doesn't make them useless...
- monospaced, on 02/01/2008, -3/+21We need an "English" translator.
- Del129, on 02/01/2008, -32/+50Down with the SUV! The most useless vehicle created by man.
- chris9902, on 02/01/2008, -0/+14bull bars are illegal here anyway.
- atomicwedgie, on 02/01/2008, -6/+20I think there should be a heavy "Soccer Mom" tax here in the US for SUVs. Of course there is a whole new group of SUV jerks buying them up and tossing on their 42" wheels. Driving on the parkways behind these things is a pain in the arse. Yea, I know, digg me down for this rant but I am for anything that helps dissuade more SUVs from being sold.
- artisresistance, on 02/01/2008, -8/+22I wish they'd do something like this in parts of the US. They should charge the poser pickup truck drivers too.
- Neiliosullivan, on 02/01/2008, -1/+14I saw a guy with a Suburban in London, figured he was a fellow American and decided to say hi. He explained that he was a businessman that had moved to London and he missed his big ol' truck. Believe me this thing looked HUGE on a London street. Frankly I wonder if he was trapped.
- inactive, on 02/01/2008, -4/+17you do know that the US constitution does not apply to places that aren't in the US right? And that London is not in the US? Please tell me you know that.
- inactive, on 02/01/2008, -1/+13the idea of someone being frightened of a jewish person walking a dog made me laugh heartily. Oh noes it's a yamulka!
- kingmanic, on 02/01/2008, -6/+18Pay to be selfish. Seems fair. There is only so much oil SUVs drink up a lot more then cars and 90% of the people who get a SUV aren't getting it to cart around camping gear. In fact most SUV I see are some guy in a completely empty car. My GF falls into that as well. She wanted a useful utility vehicle and got a Lexus RX350. I highly doubt she will ever consider loading it up with camping gear and driving into the woods. I raz her about it but she doesn't drive it very much and we mostly take my civic.
- PhillyMJS, on 02/01/2008, -4/+15"***** SUV drivers (and the ones with the biggest SUVs) are the slowest most pain in the ass drivers around."
Unless it's raining or snowing, then they drive like they're exempt from the laws of physics. At least up here in the northeast. - sjbdallas, on 02/01/2008, -11/+22I've only been there once and I would have to agree that SUVs would add way too much to the congestion. I'm on board with the fee and wish it were here too.
- MattBlackCat, on 02/01/2008, -5/+16The US embassy is getting away with it by claiming diplomatic immunity for all so they can avoid taxes.
They also use the same dodge to ignore parking tickets and speeding fines - razorsedge555, on 02/01/2008, -3/+14We'd make a mint with that law here in Phoenix. I also seem to remember that London streets are kind of narrow and winding. I can imagine an Escalade or an Expedition might be unwelcome there.
- usrlocalbin, on 02/01/2008, -7/+17Please stop your whining.
You should have taken it all into consideration before procreating.
Teach your kids NOW to use public transportation, so in the future they won't feel the need for an overly huge vehicle. - marioday, on 02/01/2008, -9/+19I second the notion.
- darny, on 02/01/2008, -6/+16Minivan != SUV
SUVs usually are more powerful and have bigger engines and thus burn more gas. Do you really need a 4x4? It's all in the chassis. Turn it down man! - kiwiboyus, on 02/01/2008, -5/+15After driving all over Ireland last year and surviving I know now first hand how narrow the streets are in Europe. Considering how much trouble we had in the small Ford Focus we rented anyone that actually chooses to drive an SUV in the cities there is an idiot.
- negativefx, on 02/01/2008, -0/+10bull bars = front racks for protecting your front bumper when you run over people/cattle (see: cow catcher)
primrose = urban area
hot hatches = you lost me on this one... i'm guessing a hatchback sport compact. - LogicBomB, on 02/01/2008, -1/+11So you think that $1500 a month isn't enough? Almost 20k a year? Quite frankly a ban would seem more reasonable.
- Antixian, on 02/01/2008, -3/+13wtf? you lost me after LOL.
- sparr, on 02/01/2008, -0/+10They ARE penalizing the CO2 emissions. If you bothered to read the article...
"Vehicles in band G, those that emit more than 225 grams of CO2 per kilometre, will pay a whopping £25($50) every day to enter the congestion zone" - inactive, on 02/01/2008, -3/+12... but it's the other 99.9% of SUV's that everyone drives
- lucasmaximus, on 02/01/2008, -5/+14Funny enough most cars come with five seats the last time I checked. My mum never had any problems getting us into a mini-metro.
- removesstains, on 02/01/2008, -15/+24Wish they did that here in Texas.
- Haecceity, on 02/01/2008, -6/+15Having children can be expensive. You didn't know that?
- minoss, on 02/01/2008, -3/+12Sounds like a pretty good commons law actually since it's applied based on emissions.
- inactive, on 02/01/2008, -3/+12As a cyclist, can I just say:
I ***** hate SUVs. They're about a foot wider than every other car, and I only ever see ***** with bluetooth headsets on in them. Look, I've got 2 sets of LED front lights flashing at you. For ***** sake, move over and let me pass you *****. - 4rp4n3t, on 02/01/2008, -8/+17***** great. About time too. No one needs to drive a vehicle that big in London, and it pisses me off that they do, taking up all my lovely road in their over-sized, overpriced gas guzzling, kid killing, cycle crushing behemoths. Oh wait. If they crush cycles maybe there *is* a practical reason to drive them around town...
- sjbdallas, on 02/01/2008, -7/+15You can drive your SUV where ever you want, but if you want to drive it down narrow congested streets, it's going to cost you. Sorry if you can't deal with it.
- mancat, on 02/01/2008, -1/+9Um.. The average mid-size SUV and minivan sold in America are typically equipped with comparably-sized V6 engines. Compare a Ford Explorer or Chevy Trailblazer to a Dodge Caravan or Ford Freestar. They all come standard with a V6 engine in the 3 to 4 liter displacement range. Smaller vans and station wagons are typically also in sync with comparable 4-cylinder engines fitted to small SUVs like the Toyota Rav4, Honda CRV, or Escape. SUVs do not automatically have larger engines
- Hermiod, on 02/01/2008, -0/+8Residents are entitled to a 90% discount.
- inactive, on 02/01/2008, -1/+9Teach your kids NOW to use contraception
- Jude007, on 02/01/2008, -2/+10You obviously aren't aware how much money is in London.
- sportbikepilot, on 02/01/2008, -3/+11you must be a transplant like me :)
