- Crosshare, on 10/29/2009, -0/+26A much better version of this story:
http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1717 ... - Arrhenius, on 10/29/2009, -0/+20The purpose of the project is irrigation.
Use the link on the bottom of the ecofriend page to get to the Telegraph original story, which has more details.
Also, see
http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1717 ... - atroxodisse, on 10/29/2009, -1/+21Didn't we see this on an episode of Futurama?
- barasawa, on 10/29/2009, -0/+14He's NOT building glaciers, he's saving meltwater for later irrigation in a stable, non-moving location.
A glacier is a river of ice. It moves.
This doesn't move.
It's like a pond of ice/icewater.
It is NOT a glacier.
Stupid 'reporters' really need to get and use a dictionary. - Iamien, on 10/29/2009, -1/+14Think "Indian" is used to state what country he is from, not his race. If you were American, of any color it would probably read "American" or if British, "British".
- luftrofl, on 10/29/2009, -0/+13blogspam. buried
Original article (mentioned on blog): http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/environment/globa ...
Also, what's with the misleading titles? This plan doesn't save glaciers or fight global warming- it's designed to provide much needed irrigation water to farmers. - BossKey, on 10/29/2009, -0/+10If he ever gets hired by somebody, his new boss's name will be Slartibartfast.
- thecheatah, on 10/29/2009, -1/+10Who said this guy wasn't white? He is just Indian.
- Mujokan, on 10/29/2009, -0/+9Sounds like a sad story, with all the troubles he faces. Reminds me a bit of the movie Swades. Maybe he will take comfort from Gandhi: "Hesitating to act because the whole vision might not be achieved, or because others do not yet share it, is an attitude that only hinders progress." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swades
- ultraseamus, on 10/29/2009, -0/+8Exactly my thought, the title is wrong, as are most of the comments so far. He is storing water to save farms, this has nothing to do with slowing down global warming.
- wiggles, on 10/29/2009, -0/+6If you read the article, he's not. He's creating lakes of meltwater that freeze in the winter and melt in the spring, providing more irrigation water for the next growing season. This has nothing to do with creating persistent glaciers.
It's really no different than the reservoir system used on much of the US west coast for their fresh water supply... - Peggles, on 10/29/2009, -0/+6Acurate and legitimate journalism is pretty much dead and has been for a while. What a farce this headline and content is. Great idea for water supplies in a region that doesn't have dependable sources. Creating a glacier? Epic fail.
- junyamint, on 10/29/2009, -0/+5When a country is so terrible at collecting its taxes that's all they can afford for non-essentials.
- rmxz, on 10/29/2009, -1/+6Would a "pics or it didn't happen" be appropriate here?
- mercano, on 10/29/2009, -0/+5Glaciers? I happen to like them, and I'm old fashioned enough to think that they give a lovely baroque feel to a continent.
- regeya, on 10/29/2009, -1/+5Whether or not you're a skeptic (I tend to lean that way) everyone has to admit that it's amazing to see large-scale geoengineering within our lifetimes. I mean...I realize it's been going on for decades, but I didn't think I'd ever hear of anyone CREATING GLACIERS.
- Mujokan, on 10/29/2009, -3/+7You're expecting him to actually read an article?
- ajsmth, on 10/29/2009, -3/+6But can he play Crysis?
- Peggles, on 10/29/2009, -0/+3it's not a glacier, plain and simple.
- afewbravemen, on 10/29/2009, -1/+4You saved the water and from what I understand it freezes "until" Summer then what?
It all melts and runs away, if so then it has all melted! There is no more ice and the consequences are the same.
Not using energy so no CO2 emissions, but it is not reducing them either.
An interesting thought, couple it too energy prodcution for a flowing river and you have a nice seasonal energy supply once a year for local inhabitants.
Saving glaciers no :(
Water supply for agriculture and potential seasonal energy source yes:) - Puppytwo, on 10/29/2009, -4/+7Regardless of what causes it, slowing it down is the best course of action
- eh123, on 10/29/2009, -0/+3This story has nothing to do with glaciers or climate change. it's about storing meltwater for irrigation.
- FeloniusMonkey, on 10/29/2009, -1/+4They could be made from baseball gloves and sofas.
- Jeff901, on 10/29/2009, -0/+3Solar and wind would likely be the most feasibly source of electricity. Gas would be difficult to move into the areas he works on a regular basis.....and would be an expense on a limited budget.
Using wind and solar into a stored energy bank (batteries) would be the most feasible....he IS an engineer, I'm sure he though of it. - flyinfoofighter, on 10/29/2009, -0/+3Would you like glaciers in your drink? Freshly made by my Glacier-o-matic, also known as an icecube tray...
- suavivity, on 10/29/2009, -1/+3To be fair, the glaciers he's building are meant to replace the water lost from the natural glaciers receding due to climate change.
- DankBuddz, on 10/29/2009, -2/+4You better hurry up and put that in an envelope and send it to someone, you might have a breakthrough.
- EnderSaveUs, on 10/29/2009, -0/+2You say glacial melt, I say hydrologic cycle. Tomato, tomato. Potato, potato, let's call the whole thing off.
- Ferretman, on 10/29/2009, -0/+2Well...it's an interesting enough bit of engineering but I don't see much practical value. I suppose it may help them even out any snowmelt a bit and that's positive, though I'm wondering if they couldn't accomplish the same thing with a couple of new wells and some conservation measures.
Still, hats off to the engineering side of it! - diggduggDOOM, on 10/29/2009, -2/+3Not all leather jackets are made from cows.
- illitique, on 10/29/2009, -0/+1Inspirational story!
- SplashBot, on 11/25/2009, -0/+1Thank you. Now I understand what this guy did. The title here and that article is so fukced you cant understand wtf guy actually did...
- jwblackwell, on 10/29/2009, -3/+4"The Indian government has allotted Norphel £16,000" - That is an insult!
- darksydxx, on 10/29/2009, -1/+2yo CHIIIIIIIIIILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
- regeya, on 10/30/2009, -0/+1So, smartass, where DO glaciers come from, the glacier fairy?
I mean...I just figured the things started when large amounts of frozen water build up in an area. Sounds like what this guy is attempting to do...it's sad to hear that Christian Science Monitor got it so very, very wrong, though, if Mr. Random Digg User is a more credible source that is. - askantik, on 10/29/2009, -1/+2True, but I've never heard of any leather used in jackets made from any animal besides cows.
- Thuktun, on 10/29/2009, -0/+1He's mimicking glaciers by holding the water that would have otherwise melted and run downriver. This won't do everything a normal glacier would do, like buffering the climate by absorbing heat through melting (as glaciers are already doing) or by reflecting sunlight.
- askantik, on 10/29/2009, -1/+1...
- DankBuddz, on 10/29/2009, -2/+2Why would you specify the norm?
- majordanger, on 10/29/2009, -1/+1Okay... here it comes... wait for it......
"THAT IS SO COOL!" - stunner21, on 10/29/2009, -1/+1I'm not gonna argue for or against the ecological side of things here but glaciers look damn cool so if hes gonna make more of em GO FOR IT!!!!
- hereticoftruth, on 10/29/2009, -1/+1Reporters getting people arguing on what isn't the facts is the most perverse form of propaganda. WE DON'T NEED IT OR DESERVE IT!
- ummagummas08, on 10/30/2009, -1/+1F'in hipster.
- hereticoftruth, on 10/29/2009, -1/+1Basically it is a dam that is filled with melt water that freezes to some degree in the winter. It is a good idea, not a stupid idea like the idiot reporter made it sound like. I wish these reporters were not so damn proud of sounding like retards! Fire them and hire some decent help!
- artfiend77, on 10/29/2009, -1/+1Haha, I so read that in Dwight Shrutes voice!
Question: Troll much? - ummagummas08, on 10/30/2009, -1/+1Reminds me of that novel 'The Old Man and The Glacier'
- diggduggDOOM, on 10/29/2009, -1/+1Lamb/sheep is the only thing that jumped to my mind, but I'm sure there are others.
- PeppermintPig, on 10/29/2009, -4/+3I don't have enough information to argue for or against, so go for it.
