- tiresias2, on 04/08/2009, -4/+13Good to see this happening! Now if only the U.S. could get on board...
- inactive, on 04/09/2009, -1/+10Can the U.S. be the leader in something other than fat people, tooth decay, and weapons production for once?
- AZBioDsl, on 04/09/2009, -0/+7it still baffles me how we in the US are so far behind on implementing this technology.
- tidu, on 04/09/2009, -1/+7Where did you get the internet in 1950? Get back in your time machine before someone notices
- cubicledrone, on 04/09/2009, -1/+7"Maybe we ought to see how well solar and wind power would do without getting heaps of tax money?"
Oh look, here comes the free market just in time to deprive the new idea of its capital. Wow. That's original.
Next you should say something like "nobody is entitled to a job." - JigoroKano, on 04/09/2009, -0/+6I noticed lots of panels throughout the countryside last time I was in Spain. It's a beautiful country for those who have never been there... especially up near the Pyrenees.
- mjklaser, on 04/09/2009, -3/+8yay, Espana!
- bal00, on 04/09/2009, -0/+5In total capacity the US is just ahead of Germany. If you look at the per capita generation or wind power as a percentage of total electricity generation, there's still some catching up to do.
- tezla, on 04/09/2009, -0/+5why, can't find it on a map?
- SpinningHead, on 04/09/2009, -0/+5Now if we can just get those "America first" folks with the flags hanging off their SUVs to start saying, "We can kick their ass in renewable energy development".
- chickenloco, on 04/09/2009, -2/+6I wonder why the US isn't up there....
Oh, because senators like Dianne Feinstein fight to stop solar projects in the middle of the ***** desert.

Unbelievable. - inactive, on 04/09/2009, -0/+4It's really sunny in most Spain but not in large parts of the US?
- failedpimp, on 04/09/2009, -1/+5What, no Princess Bride fans?
- cubicledrone, on 04/09/2009, -2/+6Because America has contempt for leadership, original thinking, initiative, the middle class and a real work ethic. This contempt is a recent development. It was just the reverse in the 1960s, which was the last time America gave a *****.
- 32bytes, on 04/09/2009, -0/+3But without deployment of existing technology there wouldn’t be more research on new technology.
- failedpimp, on 04/09/2009, -0/+3and leading inquisitions.
...too soon? - biruta, on 04/09/2009, -0/+3Checking wikipedia's list of largest photovoltaic power plants in the world:
"As of January 2009, (...) the Parque Fotovoltaico Olmedilla de Alarcon (Spain, 60 MW), the Moura photovoltaic power station (Portugal, 46 MW), and the Waldpolenz Solar Park (Germany, 40 MW)."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photovoltaic_power_st ... - tiresias2, on 04/09/2009, -1/+4Ironically, the same could be said of power from fossil fuels. Far more of your tax dollars go into subsidies for that than go into renewable energy.
If you really would like a free market, then I assume you'd also welcome paying 20 or more bucks at the pump for a gallon? - inactive, on 04/09/2009, -1/+4there's a huge difference between people from spain and the puerto ricany kind
- 32bytes, on 04/09/2009, -0/+3No, Spain is the leader in layoffs.
I'm talking about a 15.7 percenf of unemployment rate. - Swivelstick, on 04/09/2009, -0/+3But the rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain??
- nullcodes, on 04/09/2009, -1/+4They are not the leaders in development, they are the leaders in deployment.
They aren't researching cheaper solar energy technologies, they are deploying existing technology.
Dell isn't the leader in operating systems technology. - TrentDeux, on 04/09/2009, -1/+3Are you the one they call the Spaniard?
- 32bytes, on 04/09/2009, -0/+2Did you know that Spain is not part of South America?
- Barackalypse, on 04/09/2009, -2/+4Because conventional electricity is dirt cheap here, just like gasoline. Why pay more money for solar generated electricity now when conventional electricity is cheaper and the solar panel prices continue to fall?
- Frostek, on 04/09/2009, -0/+2Some of us got it.
- inactive, on 04/17/2009, -0/+2now thats an insightful solution to our energy security...did you come up with that all by your self
- chickenloco, on 04/09/2009, -1/+3Where do you expect them to put them if they can put them in the middle of the desert?
Saving our planet needs to come before saving a few species.
Anyways, if proper precautions are observed, the species may not be hurt all that much. - AZBioDsl, on 04/09/2009, -2/+4 we are number one in making and selling solar panels, we just sell them to europe.
- tidu, on 04/09/2009, -1/+3Wow, you're ignorant.
- tidu, on 04/09/2009, -1/+2Solar still has a good amount of time before it's more efficient and cheaper, I think they're planning to officially announce a 50% efficient solar cell within a few years (http://www.darpa.mil/sto/solicitations/VHESC/%29. Although it's good to see initiative, I think we need some more funding and time spent on the technology before we start blanketing the country with them.
Hopefully the stimulus helps with scientific research and gets some more American students into engineering. I really don't know where we went wrong. Plus, sex can wait. - tidu, on 04/09/2009, -1/+2Give it a few years.
- cubicledrone, on 04/09/2009, -3/+4Meanwhile the United States is the leader in layoffs. We would have asked a middle manager for a quote but they were too busy humping Powerpoint and rubbing their ass with bailout money to answer.
- inactive, on 04/09/2009, -2/+3The California desert is home to many unique landscapes and endangered species. It should be protected from the runaway development which has plagued so much of the state. If anything, Dianne should be applauded.
- ampdj89, on 04/09/2009, -1/+2Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the U.S. the leader in Wind Power?
- knotboy, on 04/10/2009, -0/+1Next you should say something like "nobody is entitled to a job."
I'll say it. It's true. Where does it say anyone is entitled to a job? - inactive, on 04/17/2009, -0/+1"I wonder why the US isn't up there....
Oh, because senators like Dianne Feinstein fight to stop solar projects in the middle of the ***** desert"
God forbid any one should look at the consequences of an action before doing something. What's really important is that YOU get what YOU want now! ***** my/your kids and future generations.Thinking about others is obviously not a republican strong point - TexMexRex, on 04/10/2009, -0/+1First they come up with spanish fly, now this?
- professor357, on 05/15/2009, -0/+1Nothing like telling half the story. All this adulation of Spain's alternative energy program has been subjected to a cost benefit analysis by the Spanish authorities.
http://www.powermag.com/issues/departments/speakin ...
Each "Green Job" created cost about $770,000, and most of them are construction-related, and will not last.
For each "Green Job" created, 2.2 jobs were destroyed in other sectors of their economy due to the increase energy costs produced by depending more heavily on wind, solar, and mini-hydro.
And despite the wind and solar generation capacity, Spain did NOT materially reduce their carbon dioxide emissions.
So much for the promise of alternative energy. Spain and Denmark are now both demonstrating that the cost doesn't justify the benefits. - inactive, on 04/09/2009, -1/+1I didn't have a problem with that.
- inactive, on 04/17/2009, -1/+1this would be us if the Greedy Old Party of oil interst didnt block anything that would keep the oil comanies from making record proffits year after year
- inactive, on 04/09/2009, -2/+1Because you think America always has to be #1.
- TrentDeux, on 04/09/2009, -2/+1And taking a 2 hour nap in the middle of the day.
- rogdabbit, on 04/09/2009, -5/+2¡Andale!
- failedpimp, on 04/09/2009, -7/+4No good, I've known too many Spaniards.
- inactive, on 04/09/2009, -6/+2Yes, and the U.S. leads the world in Chevy Volt development.
Solar is merely one piece of the puzzle. - arpad, on 04/09/2009, -6/+2We already did with a bunch of ***** projects none of which was worth the money.
Maybe we ought to see how well solar and wind power would do without getting heaps of tax money? Oh right, they both suck and no one would put their own money into these misbegotten tributes to the self-indulgence of lefties. - alanocu, on 04/09/2009, -8/+2Good to see Spain doing something besides hating Jews.
