- borninda818, on 10/12/2007, -6/+32yeah, but if i turn it off, the new episode of family guy won't be done downloading when I get back.
- netferret, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15get them improve bittorrent speeds then we can shut it down earlier :D
- valkyries, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13i just use the PC to heat my room well im sleeping, well during the winter. during the summer in arizona the air heats the computer...
- didymus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Yup. P2P is the only reason I keep (at least) 1 pc on permanently at home.
Mind you I have noticed a fair difference in power consumption since I started spinning down unused hard drives..... - ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10BitTorrent
QED - Daedalus17, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9In other words instead of bitching about people contributing to global warming on Digg turn off your computers you bunch of hypocrites!
;) - maffiou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Same here...
It's also folding some molecules in its spare time as P2P is far from using all of the CPU cycles... - drakethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Not everyone can and everyone has heard this obvious fact. People know that they can save energy especially on digg since we've seen 20 articles about it. Some people have no choice but to have them on because they serve purposes beyond surfing, etc. Also those who just leave them on for the hell of it are dicks but telling them it saves energy probably won't make them turn it off since they already know.
- pcool, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It's not about reducing global warming but it is about reducing the speed global warming
- itsxtian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6do what you can, doesn't have to be with your computer, but make an effort elsewhere then if you need your computer on so bad!
- gill1109, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6but what about the increased chance of a hardware failure and hence pollution by dead computers through switching on and off more often? i often wonder about this. also regarding light bulbs...
- adfsj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4One could blame ssh.....I know I leave all my computers available on the net (file xfers, etc)
- Itkovian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Our machines are almost never idling. Turning them off is simply not feasible because of the experiments that are running on them.
- gehlm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I started turning my machine off at home about 3 months ago to help "save the earth". I've replaced two fans and lost a hard drive because of the daily power cycling. I'll do my power saving another way, thank you.
- Tiak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well, it depends, which would you rather have, skin cancer, or alzheimer's?
- cruzlee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3As for bittorrent, here is a useful product that might interest you. http://www.gizmodo.com/gadgets/wireless/asus-wl700ge-wifi-router-builtin-160gb-drive-itunes-and-bittorrent-193470.php
By the way, asus is not the only company producing such a thing.
This will greatly reduce the energy costs because of BT. Also from a financial point of view!
On folder@home: please reconsider the costs in terms of energy and carefully examine the balance between that and the scientific progress that all these Gigawatts brought forth. I am not saying you should stop contributing, but do consider the balance for yourself...
This counts all the more for SETI@home, there is no point in detecting alien life on other planets if we have screwed up our own planet before reaching them. - TheTankengine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What has a larger benefit to mankind?
Reduced power consumption or my (many) contributed work units to folding@home? - smartyhall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I leave one computer running to serve some small web pages and run my BBS -- an "old fashioned" Synchronet BBS available at http://www.nakedweasels.com or telnet://iqland.no-ip.org. Also, all of the Windows PCs I own run the Prime95 client from the GIMPS project at http://www.mersenne.org or the BOINC distributed computing platform, so I'm improving encryption or finding gravitational anomalies with Einstein@Home.
- miaow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1nice blog and some great links
- Kelmon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1At the company that I work at (very large multinational based in the US) we are instructed NOT to turn our computers off at night because our IT department wishes to have the option to push updates to them overnight. At home, however, I try to turn everything completely off that I can with the exception of my laptop that is put to sleep instead.
- Philbert, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's actually better for your computer to leave it on all the time. I do have one that I leave off a lot of the time since it's rare that I'm using both desktops at once. Frequently mine is rendering when I'm not actually sitting at it. Plus how else are my scheduled shows going to get recorded while I'm out / sleeping?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thank you so much for the link! I am an avid environmentalist unaware of the Terrapass. And now I am. And now I just bought it. :)
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6The first thing you need to do is to learn some critical thinking skills, I believe.
- targetX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1http://www.andybrain.com/archive/mb/turning_off_pcs.htm there ya go
- justahuman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1there are thousands of industries out there polluting earth... just shut that down.. not the fukin computers
- pilgrim3970, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hmm...
I wonder if we will someday look at global warming like the idea that the earth is flat?
Before you starting digging me down - I don't doubt that some sort of global warming occurs, I just have doubts about the conventional view on its nature and extent. I am more inclined to believe that this is a natural cycle for the earth and all the hysteria is simply just that - hysteria.
Granted, I'm not a scientist but I don't hear anyone being allowed to field other ideas without being ridiculed - could this be because there has been so much political momentum built up behind this? - mariusaz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I pay for my electricity. I'll use as much of it as I want.
- coit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1How many digg articles on turning off your computer can there be in one week.
I recommend saving power by posting fewer articles telling people how to save power. - Kevin108, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4There's no such thing as global warming.
- nyx210, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2That's 30 billion kilowatt hours extra to waste on something else...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+6I find it funny that huge companies and corporations (not referring to the site that hosts this article) give tips to the viewer/reader on how to remedy global warming.. but when was the last time they stepped in and did something? Fox is a multi-billion dollar company.. when was the last time you heard of them donating to the cause?
Sure, they can tell us to turn off our lights when we're done using them.. but how far does that really go? It takes money to make things happen in this world.. money that the average Joe doesn't have.
There's plenty of sources of free energy, and we DO know how to harness them.. but we don't because the oil companies have the world by its balls. Without oil.. the economy is *****. And the people with power will fight to the death to make sure that doesn't happen. They use these tactics like this to make people think they are helping, when really all they are are corporate marionettes.
The problem isn't our computers being on.. it's everything else. - pirotess, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2It's not wasted energy if its used for personal convenience. Besides, global consumption isn't an issue until limited production is the norm.
- bulletstorm, on 10/12/2007, -11/+6"An Inconvenient Truth"
We need to do all we can in this battle.

What is Digg?
