http://www.usps.com/communications/newsroom/2008/p ... - Cattywampus, on 03/18/2008, -1/+23The USPS gets very little money from the govt. It is "an independent establishment of the executive branch of the Government of the United States," and generates most of its revenue from postage and products. It gets reimbursements "for carrying congressionally established categories of free and reduced-rate mail ."
According to its Web site, the postal service last received an operational subsidy in 1982. - rokinroj, on 03/18/2008, -3/+21I'd like to mail my old 21" CRT...is that free too?
- DrediKnight, on 03/18/2008, -0/+11"Postage is paid for by Clover Technologies Group, a nationally recognized company that recycles, remanufactures and remarkets inkjet cartridges, laser cartridges and small electronics."
- mrbojangles9211, on 03/18/2008, -3/+11A great idea. Everyone benefits, including the environment.
- kentifer, on 03/18/2008, -3/+10I hope people realize they can sell their broken ipods on ebay for a profit.
same goes with some cellphones. - Ajajadude, on 03/18/2008, -0/+6Indeed. I have several old computer parts I've been holding onto because I don't want to just toss them in the trash. I'd love to drop them off, or mail them to, some sort of electronics recycling center but I haven't been able to find anything other than companies that deal with businesses in my area. It makes me wonder why I now pay a tax on any electronics I buy here in California.
- inactive, on 03/18/2008, -0/+6First order of business: recycling the Scientology website's servers.
- Archee, on 03/18/2008, -1/+6just take your ink jet cartridges to a staples or office max and get $3 for it
- FinestCall, on 03/18/2008, -0/+4why recycle when you can sell it on ebay?
- antdude, on 03/18/2008, -0/+4Some retail stores buy your used printer cartridges for a buck or so.
- trius, on 03/18/2008, -2/+6sweet now i can throw my old junk away
- digindrivefast, on 03/18/2008, -0/+4So it can be shipped to China so the (non-persons un-people) can tear it apart and burn it up and pollute the air so horribly that World Class Athletes do not want to participate in the Summer Olympics....
- tjfloyd24517, on 03/18/2008, -2/+6You and people like you need to go to hell. There are not a lot of things that I care about, but the environment is one of them.
- Gonasadude, on 03/18/2008, -0/+3They offered me $7 for a fully working N64. ***** that.
- huckabee, on 03/18/2008, -0/+3Listen kids, if they weren't going to make money off it, they wouldn't be doing it. Not paying you for doing something that is somewhat convenient is just a way to cut costs. This is just one option. Go ahead and find the one that's most convenient and profitable for you. If you're a busy person and going to the post office is part of your routine, do this. If you have time to deal with someone else who will also pay you, do that. Everybody's a little greedy. It's your responsibility as a consumer to lessen the environmental impact of your consumption.
- ssevern, on 03/18/2008, -0/+3Old cell phones, empty inkjet and toner cartridges, and broken/old electronics can all be sold for cash on ebay. Accepting them for free is really not that generous of them. A company REALLY concerned about the environment would pick up those old 15" CRT monitors, old TVs, and refrigerators for free.
- eyloni, on 03/18/2008, -5/+8That's great. Let's hope there will be such eRecycling centers all around the country so you can ship it locally.
- leexy, on 03/18/2008, -0/+3I got no problem with it sitting on a shelf. It's the bastards throwing mercury-laden devices in nature that gets on my nerve.
- Motobike_man, on 03/18/2008, -0/+3where exactly should that $25 come from?
- MLisa, on 03/18/2008, -2/+5A comment on the Computer World page says that cellphonetradeins.com will let you ship for free and will pay you for cell phones and iPods that you send them. ♥ ♥
- Cattywampus, on 03/18/2008, -2/+5And then the mercury and other toxins leach into the ground, and into drinking water.
- inactive, on 03/18/2008, -0/+3paid ***** for it is more like it. $53 for an NDS in perfect condition? You could get more at a video game store.
- xexx, on 03/18/2008, -0/+2It's funny, because I just bought 10 black third party ink cartridges for my pixma Ip3000 for $1 each, who needs color and good picture quality anyway when all you're doing is printing text and rebates...
- fkr3, on 03/18/2008, -1/+3Throw in a few of the old full-size tower cases back when they actually used metal in those things instead of cheap plastic and flashing lights?
- ebcreasoner, on 03/18/2008, -1/+3Don't forget lead.
- MentalHazard, on 03/18/2008, -4/+6Next step: Futures markets for yet-to-be-discovered resources.
- jkramlich, on 03/18/2008, -1/+3http://www.gigoit.org helps you give/find reusable items in your area; electronics included. I've personally had someone come pick up a broken blender of mine to use for parts, so if the USPS won't take it perhaps you can find someone locally who will.
- k1down, on 03/18/2008, -0/+2Old Ink cartridges and cell phones are worth money. Don't be a lazy sucker!
- iNONYMOUS, on 03/18/2008, -0/+2Anyone heard of Craigslist? There's always someone out there that will buy your junk AND take it away...gee give the Gov't the money or keep the money in your pocket!
- phenolholic, on 03/18/2008, -0/+2(insert generic enthusiastic in-agreement word here).. no thanks, i'm not going to give it to some company that's going to profit from refurbishing then reselling it to wholesalers who sell it on ebay or ship it to third-world countries. my aged technology belongs in a trash can.
- Deathshead1941, on 03/18/2008, -0/+2Recycle?, you mean taken and RESOLD for profit?
- Cattywampus, on 03/18/2008, -3/+4Yeah, but there's all kind of toxic stuff like mercury in electronics, which end up in the landfill and leaches into the ground, and possibly drinking water.
- BradBrown, on 03/18/2008, -14/+15When the USPS becomes self sufficient, then it'll be free. As long as my tax dollars are paying for it, it's not free.
- shortyjacobs, on 03/18/2008, -1/+2Why does always seem like the craziest nutters in the butter are the least effective at articulating their arguments?
- Truzseeker, on 03/18/2008, -0/+1let's turn back the clock where kids were really learning something...good idea, a good throw away scheme for junk distraction electronics :)
- MasteRR, on 03/18/2008, -2/+3There may be a computer/technology recycling center in your city. Most major cities have them now. Do so Googling for your city name + computer recycling and see what comes up. Also, the following site has a list of a few places you could take it to.
http://www.epa.gov/epaoswer/hazwaste/recycle/ecycl ... - m85476585, on 03/18/2008, -0/+1The USPS is self-sufficient. Why do you think you have to pay for stamps!
- SlimFastForYou, on 03/19/2008, -0/+1Didn't they teach you ***** in economics class? There Is No Such Thing As A Free Um ChicKen Sandwich! :(
- SACubeMonkey, on 03/18/2008, -0/+1I wonder if you can fit a VCR in one of those envelopes...
- NonLeftistDiggr, on 03/18/2008, -2/+3You need a big dump load, then hide the monitors under tires, boxes, whatever, you have to hide it well, at least in CA
- ecobites, on 03/22/2008, -0/+1Whilst you are recycling - don't forget to recycle your food. Check our Recycle dining that is becoming trendy at www.ecobites.com
http://ecobites.com/content/view/782/48/ - Ajajadude, on 03/18/2008, -1/+2I've been looking for info like that. As much as we're told it's bad to toss electronics in the trash, there isn't much in the way of recycling (at least, a comprehensive recycling center). I know the city I live in has events about once a year for that sort of thing, but it would be great if I could recycle my electronic garbage whenever.
- phenolholic, on 03/18/2008, -0/+1the packaging (and funding for the postage from budgets so you don't incur them), the outsourcing for 1,500 post offices to create routes to deliver the goods, the added weight of all the packages being sent continuously and its effect on fuel costs, etc. makes this a not so environmentally friendly proposition. funny how these ad weasels disguise a market for your old goods into third-world countries as a contribution to the enviroment.
- aserer511, on 03/18/2008, -1/+2free.....
you should be partially reimbursed!! - k1down, on 03/18/2008, -0/+1WTF dude...
are you a disgruntled postal employee? - MasteRR, on 03/18/2008, -2/+3I am a Ron Paul support as much as anyone, but is it necessary here, in the comments of an article that has nothing to do with politics at all? This just makes us look bad. Please stop.
- mahdaeng, on 03/18/2008, -0/+1Yes, but do we get a tax deduction?
- freebundles, on 04/07/2008, -0/+0Definitely worth a digg on this one!!!
