Recover Heat from Water Going Down the Drain

greenbuildingelements.com — A drain water heat recovery unit (DWHR) transfers heat from water running down the drain to cold water going to the water heater. This preheats the water so that the heater is starting with warmer water, and thus needs less energy. A DWHR unit can save as much as 25-30% of the energy used for water heating.

  • allaboutdatiki, on 05/30/2008, -0/+2Interesting idea ... the big question is the payback time when incorporated into new construction (retrofits would likely be a PITA). The house would need to be designed so that the showers are close to and above the water heater to avoid adding crazy costs to the plumbing installation.
