- 1plant1world, on 06/17/2008, -1/+12Want biofuel? Hemp is the best alternative! Stop with the raping of our food supplies and rainforests! Hemp will grow anywhere.
- davidhallstrom, on 06/17/2008, -3/+14I don't like palm oil and I don't like biofuel. Now I have more reasons not to like them. Thank you.
- kindpastor, on 06/17/2008, -0/+8I hate to break this to you, but the destruction of the rain forests will likely send the price of orangutan through the roof.
- supermanky, on 06/17/2008, -0/+8There is also the option of sustainably harvested palm fruit and palm fruit oil.
- Emmo213, on 06/17/2008, -2/+10I'm pretty sure we blamed this on the girl scouts about a month or so ago.
- bootfail, on 06/17/2008, -1/+7Total Annihilation was AWESOME! Robots fighting robots, brilliant!~
- GiveMeCookies, on 06/17/2008, -7/+12We keep destroying the life. How much time will it take us to proceed with this total anihilation, I wonder.
Sometimes I'm ashamed to be a human. - bashar2, on 06/17/2008, -2/+7I'm not too worried about it. I only use palm oil when I'm making orangutan stir fry.
- stienster, on 06/17/2008, -5/+9palm oil is in virtually EVERY food item. I've been trying to avoid it for the past year.
- kindpastor, on 06/17/2008, -3/+7"Powerful" means the story really tugged at your heartstrings.
Which means it was primarily emotionally based.
Which means reason didn't necessarily enter to the equation.
Which means its a load of *****. - speedk0re, on 06/17/2008, -5/+9There's a place called the rainforest; it truly sucks ass.
Let's knock it all down and get rid of it fast.
You say, "Save the rainforest," but what do you know?
You've never been to the rainforest before.
[Chorus]
Getting Gay With Kids is here!
To tell you things you might not like to hear.
You only fight these causes 'cause caring sells.
All you activists can go ***** yourselves!
[Bridge]
Someday if we work hard, boys and girls,
There'll be no more rainforests left in the entire world!
World!
[Chorus]
Getting Gay With Kids is here!
To spread the word and bring you cheer. Yeah!
Getting Gay With Kids is here!
Let's knock down the rainforest! What do you say?!
It's totally gay! It's totally gay! - bensone1, on 06/17/2008, -4/+8we need to find a better way to be able to tap into this source without causing so much collateral damage to the surrounding environment (perhaps find some way to farm it). palm oil can be a very good product, especially with its high amount of beta-carotene and oleic acid, and using it as an alternative fuel source offers the potential to expand... but we have to do whatever it takes to keep from endangering those who reside in the rainforests as well as keeping a vital manufacturer of oxygen.
- MidnightRealism, on 06/17/2008, -1/+5Rainforests are home to a wider variety of life than any other biome on this planet, so it wouldn't be "a few species," dumbass. To address your question directly, many of these species could potentially have medicinal or chemical benefits for mankind (see the horseshoe crab) that would go completely unresearched if they're eradicated before anyone has a chance to examine them. But hey, your name is kindpastor, not smartpastor, so I guess it's a stretch for you to consider that sort of thing.
- reef, on 06/17/2008, -0/+4for more information, from the article:
http://redapes.org/wp-content/uploads/2007/08/bosp ... - lagannt, on 06/17/2008, -3/+7Dugg down for automatically dismissing palm oil as evil because of saturated fat. Studies have shown that even foods with high amounts of saturated fat can be part of a well balanced diet. It's all a matter of how much you eat. Soybean oil can be just as harmful if people consume a large amount of it, like many do anyway. Don't put off an oil that has been used for hundreds of years just because the latest generation gorges on it and gets fat and is now cutting down forests to get their hands on it.
I hope the orangutan issue gets solved though. Some proper planning and conservation can at least fix the situation to an extent. - DooM, on 06/17/2008, -7/+11I have yet to have a single point! I have no facts or logical arguments in my head but I just love trolling Digg. Worship how I waste my time and that last brain cell that still fires!
/Another JimmySpaza Waste of Space Rant - TheMightyDane, on 06/17/2008, -4/+7Dugg for the monkey-image.
- ausfahrt, on 06/17/2008, -0/+3"Necessarily" means it may also have entered the equation.
Which means you disproved your own point.
Which means you are an idiot.
Which means you FAIL. - MisterEX, on 06/17/2008, -1/+4Buy soy.
- MidnightRealism, on 06/17/2008, -0/+3Just because you're too lazy to get off your fat ass and go see something beautiful doesn't mean you should assume the same of everyone else. Moron.
- Arcesius, on 06/17/2008, -0/+3Ahhhh yeah... good times... good times...
- inactive, on 06/17/2008, -1/+4In the Philippines on Luzan Island there is one road around the island 99% of the population live within 1000 yds of this road, the rest is vast mountainous jungles and a huge desert plain in the middle that could be farmed for palm oil for Bio diesel ,cooking oil lamp oil and skin creams with the right irrigation equipment.
- kindpastor, on 06/17/2008, -0/+3Making money on the internet isn't as easy as the books make it look.
I recommend legitimate reading. - waspbr, on 06/17/2008, -4/+7you shouldn't boycott something just because of an FUD article like that, granted that it is informative to the dangers to some extent, but this doesn't mean that all palm oil producers are bad. it would be a good article if it would provide the something like a list of responsible producers or derivative products that follow that line of thought. Just switching to soy is just going to mean the same problem in another industry.
- MisterEX, on 06/17/2008, -0/+3Unnecessary.
- Shawkab, on 06/17/2008, -2/+5Boycott Palm Oil.. check..
I swear all I do now adays is boycott stuff.. - tierneyb, on 06/17/2008, -2/+5No joke, every once in a while you hear this "save the rainforest" bs. Do you have any idea how vast our forests still are? I for one have no clue, but I'm guessing there is a lot of oil left in them. Plenty for all.
- DooM, on 06/17/2008, -2/+4The fact that I chose to pick on JimmySpaza shows that he trolls the site enough that I recognize him and the idiocy that is ALMOST always spewing from his keyboard. I think I fell off my chair once when he had a decent, well-supported point.
Nice strawman, tho - you'll be trolling Spaz-Style in no time rolling like that. - superasu, on 06/17/2008, -1/+3"There have even been reports of these animals being used for prostitution and in some cases being buried alive."
Ok, orangutan prostitution is one thing I did not know about. - kindpastor, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2Instead of palm oil? How am I supposed to fry stuff in soy? Your advice is ludicrous! Ludicrous!
You're a terrible person too. - MacBookForMe, on 06/17/2008, -7/+9How human could be so very intelligent, yet so very stupid considering its own future, nature, animals and plants?
- inactive, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2You just can't have both...
- kindpastor, on 06/17/2008, -2/+4Why do you think the rainforests are a "vital manufacturer of oxygen"?
90% of our oxygen comes from sea plankton so....
How did you come to the conclusion that losing the rainforest will have us all gasping for breath? - kindpastor, on 06/17/2008, -2/+5The stress caused by trying to avoid palm oil for a year has likely already shortened your life more than the consumption of said palm oil.
The stress you continue to inflict upon yourself with your irrational dietary concerns is slowly churning away at your body's cell production centers and speeding you towards demise.
You will die 5 years short of average life expectancy, surrounded by health foods and holistic cures.
I have spoken, thus it shall be. Amen. - kindpastor, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2You must be a member of the Palm Oil Lobby.
- MidnightRealism, on 06/18/2008, -0/+2"Cure for cancer?" That's one that YOU yanked out of thin air, not me, so I don't really see any reason to continue that branch of the discussion since your head is too far up your ass for you to be reasonable. The rainforest is far from being studied to death; most research thus far has been done on population dynamics to see if there's any chance anything can survive in fragmented habitat in the long term (short answer: probably not) and via satellite to observe changes to the forest's makeup. But hey, some know-nothing ***** like yourself is clearly more qualified to make decisions on something you don't understand than the greater scientific community. What do they know, right?
- DooM, on 06/18/2008, -0/+2AN encyclopedia is a better source than a dictionary because we're talking about two different things. But, just to be fair:
American Heritage:
A made-up version of an opponent's argument that can easily be defeated. To accuse people of attacking a straw man is to suggest that they are avoiding worthier opponents and more valid criticisms of their own position: “His speech had emotional appeal, but it wasn't really convincing because he attacked a straw man rather than addressing the real issues.” - kindpastor, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2Why not use animals for our needs? Like food, and clothing and other *****?
By that logic, if killing an animals gives us food, it's not wrong to kill animals for food.
Hence its not wrong to Kill Orangutans for palm oil. - stinkypyper, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2The growth in the industry appears to be fueled by using it as a alternative fuel source, which it is a poor one at best. I don't think demand for it is a food product is high enough to warrant this kind of destruction.
- monsterette, on 06/17/2008, -6/+8...great info on the use of palm oil....
- DooM, on 06/18/2008, -1/+3L M F A O !
A straw man is a logical fallacy, you ***** twit (see? That was an ad hominem attack). "A straw man argument is an informal fallacy based on misrepresentation of an opponent's position."
Read up and then YOU won't have to feel so dumb.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straw_man - Andrwmorph, on 06/17/2008, -1/+3***** the rain forest. You can't take three steps without tripping over something that will violently kill you.
- TheMachine1, on 06/18/2008, -0/+2Who are you to question billions of years of evolution.
- kindpastor, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9zLK70K-_w
- ChiefShaman, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1Listening to the majority of these replies really shows how selfish man is. The real problem in this world is man, he is arrogant, selfish, greedy, and just plain stupid! Most of the worlds problems could be solved if we just got rid of man - at least all the arrogant, selfish, greedy and stupid ones - that would be about 80%. Then we would have no more over population problem and that would resolve most of the world issues!
- MidnightRealism, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1Apparently reading is a strain for you. The "fat" is based on your apparently insatiable demand for processed food product, the "lazy" is based on your total lack of interest in broadening your horizons, a characteristic that I assure you is not present in everyone, and the "moron" is an accusation leveled at the absence of anything approaching a sensible thought in your head. Would a diagram make this easier?
- kindpastor, on 06/17/2008, -1/+2You're also a goddamn hypocrite.
I don't like you either, dugg down for being a goddamn hypocrite. - kindpastor, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1Back when we tribes of primates fighting to survive, predators were everywhere. Those who could quickly identify and act against predators lived to pass on their genes to us.
Now, we have no natural predators, but that doesn't stop our powerful, predator-finding brain from doing the one thing it was programmed to do by years of evolution...find predators.
Corporations, gays, atheists, drug users, minorities, Wal-Mart, any irrational, unjustified, or emotional-based fear is just a manifestation of this ancient drive.
The people who take up these "causes" the "activists" are nothing more than beasts, allowing their basic instincts to overcome their reason. Beasts! Beeeeeeasts! - D0m0kun, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1ROFL! I know how you feel.
- baylat, on 06/17/2008, -1/+2...oh god...
