- kenvsryu, on 11/09/2007, -14/+544Whoa nipple slip.
- BassMastr, on 11/12/2007, -13/+385Sure is bright for being 1000 feet down...
- jmkiii, on 11/12/2007, -36/+264It's been Photoshopped. The reflections are all wrong.
- bobfrancis, on 11/07/2007, -2/+156A few facts about this photo, some of which bust it as inaccurate.
- These are urchin skeletons, the spines are gone. I particularly like how the dead urchins are manually positioned, with the small one set on top - the photographer was going for that natural look I guess :)
- I shoot underwater - even if it was 1000 feet down (which it ain't, it's probably about 6) the spotlighting would look absolutely nothing like this.
- These are pencil urchins, a type of urchin that has fewer, and much thicker, spines.
- last fact, I am a dork for taking the time to leave this comment on a Sunday morning on Digg, fo' sho' - cheesehound, on 11/07/2007, -5/+159Daaa da da da da da da daaaa da daa... KATAMARI DAMACYYYYY
- eltrev, on 11/06/2007, -4/+123This is the dead shell of the urchin, the spines are gone. For example: http://www.dkimages.com/discover/previews/742/5049 ...
Stupid, misleading headlines for photography sure do bug, especially when it relates to the natural world. Oh, and a 1000 feet under? Yeah, nice lighting for that ... - wispygalaxy, on 11/05/2007, -0/+99That would make a sick paperweight :D
- burke, on 11/06/2007, -11/+71Not Photoshopped, but not a Sea Urchin under 1000 feet either. This is what they look like after they die and all the readily decayable material.... decays. This is like a skeleton.
- Appox, on 11/05/2007, -15/+66Any driver going that deep will take a light with him.
- sipps, on 11/07/2007, -2/+50Wasn't that a guy in Dragon Ball Z?
- meridian300, on 11/05/2007, -5/+52A diver 1000 feet below you say?
lol. - praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -5/+49Looks like a Mandelbrot set.
- Kanidia, on 11/06/2007, -3/+45Somehow, the "wow" as the first post has almost a 50/50 chance of getting dugg up/down. If the first 10 people digg them up, it ends up being dugg up. If the first 10 people digg it down, then the rest will digg it down too.
The beauty of the digg society lies in the conforming community. Wow. - ByteGuerilla, on 11/05/2007, -1/+40Toyota Hilux
- CrazyRussian, on 11/07/2007, -12/+43hooray for sarcasm?
http://xkcd.com/331/ - shablog, on 11/05/2007, -2/+28Y'all are reminding me of YouTube commenters.
- Roger, on 11/05/2007, -6/+31Its the funk!
- Hoxie, on 11/05/2007, -0/+25That is actually the "skeleton" of a sea urchin. It is the shell left over when the creature dies.
- clickwir, on 11/05/2007, -0/+24He said DRIVER. Not diver.
- BassMastr, on 11/05/2007, -10/+34Also any diver that deep would be dead...
- mobius3d, on 11/05/2007, -0/+22The caption says it was "discovered" at a depth of 1000ft, not necessarily photographed there....
The photographer states in the comments "it's part of a small collection of nautical artifacts that I have at home."
http://www.flickr.com/photos/jurvetson/751085804/# ... - dbxz, on 11/06/2007, -2/+23this is a dead sea urchin... google: "sea urchin test"
"The test is the urchins external skeleton and is all that remains after the urchin has died and lost its many sharp spines" - Jugalator, on 11/05/2007, -2/+23Alright, someone diving with the essential hardware would. Happy?
- Lixie, on 11/05/2007, -0/+20It looks like my dog's chew toy.
- kkDonut, on 11/05/2007, -2/+22Its the BugBait from Half Life 2!
- ffejrey, on 11/05/2007, -3/+22What exactly are they driving 1000 ft deep in the sea? I want one.
- elmphlemp, on 11/05/2007, -3/+20A: We are Devo
- OsiVert, on 11/05/2007, -0/+15I bet they brought it to the surface and took a picture of it in a tank.
- Appox, on 11/05/2007, -1/+15yeah, censor ass, save the children
- mathmanjeffy, on 11/05/2007, -0/+14Yes you do.
- EvaMonkey01, on 11/05/2007, -0/+13sigh, another post complaining about a topic posted on Digg. take your bitching, go look for a topic you're interested in and stop ruining our good time.
- KokomoNYC, on 11/07/2007, -0/+13Vaguely nostalgic: http://www.crazypet.com/news/Bumble_Ball.jpg
- SyntraFTW, on 11/05/2007, -0/+13I smell xkcd.
- jambox, on 11/05/2007, -1/+11Ha, just showed this to my boy (he's two) and he said...
"Mmmmmm.... cake!" - Oomsoup, on 11/05/2007, -0/+9If you go back in Flickr and look at the comment: "The little sea urchin on top is quite unusual. It was discovered by a research vessel near New Caledonia at a depth of 1000 ft. "
So the little one was found 1000 ft under but the picture was not taken there. - bobfrancis, on 11/05/2007, -0/+8I think he meant that the spotlighting needed for 1000 feet wouldn't look like sunshine in 10 feet of water - it's a different type of light.
eltrev FTW - jmkiii, on 11/05/2007, -0/+8Sarcasm is so much more fun when some people don't get it. I will never again use "the sarcasm tag."
- shagen454, on 11/05/2007, -1/+9They're still at church.
- TVarmy, on 11/05/2007, -1/+9It's dead. Sicko.
- Ajajadude, on 11/05/2007, -0/+7The sun?
- latrosicarius, on 11/05/2007, -1/+8Hi, Welcome to the Internets.
http://xkcd.com/331/ - Dylan16807, on 11/05/2007, -0/+6Are you serious? It's called diffuse lighting. The light is generally coming from above, and no the area 2 feet behind it is not going to be dark.
- TheRealToma, on 11/05/2007, -3/+9Hi, Welcome to the Internets.
http://xkcd.com/331/ - m0laria, on 11/05/2007, -1/+7It is also clearly dead as sea urchins normally are covered in purple spines.
- TheRealToma, on 11/05/2007, -2/+8Hi, Welcome to the Internets.
http://xkcd.com/331/ - Roblodocus, on 11/04/2007, -2/+8And it would be normal if it was alive?
- bbardlbradd, on 11/05/2007, -1/+7If anyone here doesn't believe this is an act of god, you all obviously don't know how much god likes nipples.
- Ninjapope, on 11/04/2007, -1/+7I don't know. Maybe they brought a really bright light with them.
- clickwir, on 11/05/2007, -1/+7No one said it was a diver. Could have been a deep water sub. They do have camera's on those.
- Jugalator, on 11/05/2007, -1/+6I hope so.
