- Mightbiteyou, on 01/06/2009, -9/+63by invading Iran of course
- inactive, on 01/06/2009, -2/+49I went to Hawaii and saw the protected lands. I am very grateful that he passed the act; the lands are absolutely beautiful and full of the most unique life forms I've ever seen.
- erik22h, on 01/06/2009, -5/+46A positive article on Bush???? On Digg???????????? My head feels like it's going to explode.
- comfortssimple, on 01/06/2009, -24/+59Bush is that desperate for a legacy.
- binky79, on 01/06/2009, -4/+37How do you protect a volcano?
- dekuscrub, on 01/06/2009, -5/+35There is nothing he could do that would satisfy his critics.
Bush could literally cure cancer tomorrow, and nobody would give him credit.

Environment at risk: President Bush starts last-minute deregulation push
http://www.nydailynews.com/money/2008/10/31/2008-1 ...
The White House is working to enact a wide array of federal regulations, many of which would weaken government rules aimed at protecting consumers and the environment, before President Bush leaves office in January.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/artic ...
In his waning weeks in the White House, U.S. President George W. Bush is drawing more fire than ever as he presides over a steady stream of environmentally unfriendly regulations meant to last into the Obama administration.
http://www.reuters.com/article/environmentNews/idU ... - wendelgee2, on 01/06/2009, -8/+26No, his environmental policies have been horrific. He hasn't enforced the clean air act. He's loosened restrictions on mining and logging. He's let recreational vehicles into sensitive areas. He's gutted the EPA to the point that Christine Todd Whitman threw up her hands and quit. And worse, he's had an energy policy that promoted the consumption of fossil fuels and stalled real progress toward energy independence.
He's done TWO good environmental things: Both just cordoned off already remote marine regions that he and his business buddies weren't using anyway. - honeybrass, on 01/06/2009, -11/+28Too little, too late
- pbarney, on 01/06/2009, -2/+19It's interesting that we have to read this in a British newspaper.
- diskoh, on 01/06/2009, -6/+21"...by giving them a protective coat of oil."
- stklaw, on 01/06/2009, -0/+13I sure will remember him even if he doesn't protect the fish.
- lifeandtimes, on 01/06/2009, -2/+14If he has some kind of motive here to try and cover his ass or create some long term image for himself...I don't care. This is a good thing.
- NCSUspoon, on 01/06/2009, -1/+12Yeah, that Teddy Roosevelt guy was a total douche to the environment /sarcasm
- iveywk, on 01/06/2009, -10/+21There must not be any oil there...
- pintomp3, on 01/06/2009, -2/+13As the decider guy, he's allowed to. It's in the Magma Carta.
- oldhick, on 01/06/2009, -0/+10Bush isn't pressing charges against the shoe thrower, the Iraqis are.
- upeneff, on 01/06/2009, -13/+23If Bush is so desperate to do some good, why not first try and protect this gulf?

http://dsc.discovery.com/news/2006/10/20/deadzone_ ... - oldhick, on 01/06/2009, -4/+14So lets use his desperation to our advantage! I for one hope his desperation leads him to do as many positive things as he can before he leaves.
- fearlessfx, on 01/06/2009, -1/+10Not sure how to protect one, but you can please the volcano gods by sacrificing a virgin into it.
- tolbs, on 01/06/2009, -0/+9Wow, not one, not two, but three spam links....thats enterprising.
- inactive, on 01/06/2009, -2/+11i bet bush actually will somehow end up being remembered positively in the books -- never underestimate a fundless doctoral candidates ability to carve a niche in academia for himself by going against straight forward understanding of history. Cowboys and the U.S. cavalry went from brave pioneering heroes of the wild west to merciless Indian exterminators within the span of a generation of scholarship after all.
- garryw, on 01/06/2009, -3/+12Humans and fish co-existing peacfully
- NCSUspoon, on 01/06/2009, -1/+9They won't. You still call ex-presidents 'President (Name)'.
- fleischner, on 01/06/2009, -7/+15"As part of a bid to improve his record."
This, my friends, is what you call an op-ed disguised as news. Nowhere in the article does it state anything to support the author's *opinion* inserted into the subtitle. If you didn't notice it, you're probably one of those who still claim there's no liberal bias in the media. - Anzat, on 01/06/2009, -1/+9He doesn't have a tolerable environmental record. He has done a couple good things, but only because it's easy, and he's trying to cover for all the horrible ***** he's done elsewhere.
- bigballerrob22, on 01/06/2009, -0/+7well considering he didn't press charges against the shoe thrower, you are wrong. The Iraqi government is pressing charges. That is out of the U.S. jurisdiction.
- inactive, on 01/06/2009, -0/+7"...part of a bid to improve his record on the environment before leaving office."
huh? didn't he just move to screw with the Endangered Species Act? - Natitude, on 01/06/2009, -4/+11well at least he's trying to protect something...
- Thud, on 01/06/2009, -1/+8Blame it on the headline.
The protection applies to an AREA. The area contains, among other things, reefs and volcanoes. - nmezib, on 01/06/2009, -2/+8I guess he was right... humans and fish CAN coexist peacefully!
- Gemfinder, on 01/06/2009, -23/+29He's actually done it before. He created a huge marine sanctuary in Hawai'i's northwest uninhabited islands a few years ago.
Even a broken clock is right twice a day. Bush's social policies suck rocks but he has a tolerable-to-fair environmental record. - gearhead364, on 01/06/2009, -1/+7You cannot directly associate a President to the economic status, a good economy does not mean a good president and same for the reverse. He has consistently been a poor president for the last 8 years because of all his other decisions.
- Surferess, on 01/06/2009, -5/+10yeah, his reputation.
- Witchdoktor, on 01/06/2009, -0/+5Nixon*
- Antimatter85, on 01/06/2009, -1/+6How much do you think he can do in the next 14 days (minus weekends)? I'm betting it's not enough to make up for 8 years of deception, war, and wrecking-ball style policies.
- azikrogar, on 01/06/2009, -0/+5I think your comment went awry when you downplayed the fish, the water, and the molten lava. There's actually very little protection of our ocean's habitats compared to the land protection we have today. It's a good move, but I agree that he should have done more for our rights and the constitution.
- mcquitty, on 01/06/2009, -1/+6Tommy,
The economy was in a recession when Bush took over. It was a small one, but one nonetheless. Remember the dotcom meltdown? Remember the stimulus package?
That's part of the reason Bush won. "It's the economy, stupid." - Ysabetwordsmith, on 01/06/2009, -14/+19If Bush is really serious about helping the environment -- which I sincerely doubt, because this looks like plain old ass-covering -- then he'd do better to cancel all his *other* initiatives aimed at destroying it. I am not fooled by this shenanigan. This move may be beneficial, but he might as well try to put spackle over a bomb crater.
- jimfeet, on 01/06/2009, -3/+8Protected lands? I thought the area north of Hawaii was a marine preserve. I was also under the impression that no tourism was permitted in the protected area.
Bush is willing to set aside marine sanctuaries because no oil companies are looking to drill in the Mariana Trench. He's apparently willing to protect any areas that are nearly immune from development. - TommyTikal, on 01/06/2009, -6/+11That...or maybe Clinton left the country with a decent economy?
- IKORKYI, on 01/06/2009, -4/+9i think that if you consider his environmental policies, even in just the pacific, this like a beauty mark on rosie odonnell
- JeremyGrieves, on 01/06/2009, -0/+5Did anybody mention that that is the area of the plastic soup vortex?
http://www.independent.co.uk/environment/the-world ... - 3tcp, on 01/06/2009, -0/+5what is nore?
- inactive, on 01/07/2009, -0/+4The difference, in my very humble opinion, is that you really can't compare Amero-Indian liquidations to other forms of genocide fairly. Many tribes were nomadic, they were very small in number, and most Amero-Indians were wiped out by plagues brought over by the Europeans unintentionally long before the foundation of the U.S. anyways, not by the barrel of a gun.
I don't know, I just don't see the point of vilifying my own countrymen and culture. Self-hatred just seems like a waste of time to me. - inactive, on 01/06/2009, -4/+8GTFO
- inactive, on 01/06/2009, -0/+4Oh it will not end then
- zombiedepot, on 01/06/2009, -0/+4According to a Gallup Poll in 2007, 58% said the initial attack was a mistake. According to the NY Times poll in 2007, 61% said we should have stayed out of Iraq.
"arm chair quarterbacks?"
Wouldn't the correct term be "arm chair president"? Last I checked Bush wasn't a quarterback or even a football player. -
