- cconger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+22Because they allow access for a man to climb down to do maintenance.
- rejoined, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19Nice Manhole Cover pics.
Question: Why are they called Manholes?
I understand they're access to Maintenance Holes, but in that case they should have been named 'MainHoles'.
Anyway, a nice tidbit from Wikipedia:
"India has become the world leader in manufacturing manhole covers, driving many manufacturers in other countries out of business. Its extremely low labor costs have overcome even the cost of shipping such heavy objects." - quakerorts, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17I found manhole covers in my town that had typos on them. Wouldn't you think someone would double check spelling before casting it in steel? I need to take pics of those.
- Bigcat151, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12As a Civil Engineer I find this interesting.
As a regular guy this is boring as hell. - geekchic, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10"I found manhole covers in my town that had typos on them"
You study them enough to notice such things? - johnn11238, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Doesn't the word "Manhole" make anybody else think of gay porn?
No?
Nevermind, then. - johnn11238, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Yep, I live in NYC and almost all of our manhole covers say "NYC Dept. Of Sanitation" and under that, "Made in India".
- MrSketch, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8I'm not entirely certain, but I'm sure it has something to do with clicking the 'Digg it' button. Further research, of course, is necessary.
- photozz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6**Why are manhole covers round and not square?**
Pfft. they are round so the cover can't fall in and kill someone working down there.
**Question: Why are they called Manholes?**
Cause calling them "Woman Holes" would be sexual harassment. - diggface5000, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7leave it to france to make elaborate manhole covers...
interesting site - orangester, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Wow, coincidentally i'm wearing a teenage mutant ninja turtles shirt.
- punchinelli, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5This was one fascinating story! Those manholes were simply insane. I can't believe the diversity of manholes in the world. Unreal. The time and attention put into these manhole covers must have been earth-shattering. It's not every day you get a consolidation of all of the world's beautiful manhole covers!
- DonutGuy, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8That's an ... interesting hobby you has there.

- pbaehr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Not Tied Securely From Wallaby.
- ohsin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4i used to play a videogame called "DeusEx" even in that all the manhole covers read "made in india" .
- Ventolin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Woops.... heh, make that:
http://manhole-covers.net/galerie/photos/p118.jpg - brstilson, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Every Manhole cover I've ever seen is made by East Jordan Iron Works in northern Michigan. If India puts them out of business then that's it for that corner of the state.

Of all the man holes, the view from 69 was probably the best. It's clean and well maintained. Not to mention It hardly smells, even late at night. Good job Canalisation Mulhouse. =] - dyreschlock, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2none from neenah :/

- uppedbyhiggins, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Needs more Triangles:
"Nashua, New Hampshire may be unique in the U.S. for having triangular manhole covers that point in the direction of the underlying flow."
from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manhole_cover - miriclaire, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I can imagine a time in the far future when archeologists or space visitors will be gathering these up and trying to decipher the meaning in the elaborate workmanship.
- chriscj, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Odd hobby thats for sure..
- Glansbourg, on 10/10/2007, -5/+6Chicago Manhole - SFW

- josearce, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1i thought it was a porn magazine, shame on me...
- Stegg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1But the real question is: Why are manhole covers round?
- inked, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Agreed!
- bozzel, on 10/10/2007, -4/+5Almost all manhole covers are round. This prevents them from falling into the hole.
- inked, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Sounds like a lot of people here with gay tendencies
- A2TrueBlue, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Because if they were square you could lift 'em up, turn them diagonally and drop them down.
- miriclaire, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Because otherwise you would not have seen it.
- PAlacrosse, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1id like to see one that looks like a decending ladder.

- spearce, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Questions.
Why is there a website devoted to man hole covers?
Are there man hole cover enthusiast in the world? - Ventolin, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2http://manhole-covers.net/galerie/slide.php3?f=0
