- dadrox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+42I think lightning struck the server...
- econoar, on 10/12/2007, -6/+39I didn't host it, dickstain. I found it on stumble upon.

Working image mirror. - jhnewt, on 10/12/2007, -4/+32I think Digg needs a "Lightning Pictures" section.
- konstantinos88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25How the hell does one know when this is about to happen? The chances of snapping the photo at the right time....
- vroom101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21@econoar, that is a way cool picture! You just know stuff got fried in that house. Hope the photographer was OK. Alright, look at these two lightning pics, call them "Grandpa" and "Grandma" Giant Lightning Bolt, which are probably related to the pic you posted:
http://chamorrobible.org/gpw/gpw-20061026.htm
I read somewhere that there was a frying of certain electronic equipment at the air base after this lightning strike. Don't know if the C-130 Hercules or the control suffered any damage. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17I don't see any houses in this picture. Just trailer 'homes'. I hope Brittany Spears is ok.
- sxtxixtxcxh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13@konstantinos88: you leave your shutter open for a long time. when the lightning strikes, it exposes itself, but not long enough that it overexposes entire scene. it's not like the camera redraws the dark places once the lightning dissipates .
- OsiVert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11@konstantinos88
If you do a google search for Kane Quinnell (the guy who took the picture), you can get a backstory behind it. Long story short, he was using a 4 second shutter speed and took him a couple of blank attempts before the bolt struck. - idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11scabbers is now a stain on my blocklist
- spatznick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8The good part: thunder noise was instantaneous.
- PoopSalad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8gordon, do you understand how a camera works? a four second exposure would capture the lightning bolt.
- ihate2regist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Photo here. http://img.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2006/09/lightningST_600x450.jpg
- davecor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Why do I get the feeling that I could post a photo of my dog in the backyard and some nitwit would call "fake"?
- vuke69, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7A 4 second exposure will tend to do that.
- mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3A lightning bolt is perhaps as wide as your thumb (Re: Resnick/Halliday/Walker physics book). Exposure might exaggerate it though.
- spatznick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I wish I saw the same picture just 5 seconds later, after the strike.
- mrgeekguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4When God wants you dead, he really wants you dead.

FSM FTW! - siliconentity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was pretty close to a lightning strike once, about 30 feet away (it hit the flagpole in front of the building while I was standing out front watching the lightning show). What you don't necessarily realize when you look at these pictures is, as impressive as the flash is, the main impact is the noise. I think it was the loudest explosion I've ever heard in my life. And it's not like thunder, a rolling sound that maybe gets louder and softer. It's just an enormous, sudden, incredibly loud BOOM! Exactly like a bomb going off in your face. It almost knocked me over, and my ears were left ringing. (Actually, the EM pulse set off the fire alarm in the building, as well as burning out lots of our equipment, so that was part of the ringing sound.)
- plague, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I guess because i didn't reply to the first comment just to get mine to the top and everyone got annoyed that there were too many links to mirrors.
- sonofagunn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Where does he claim to be the source? I see he stated he found it on stumbleupon.
- Workage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This happened to me and my family once. The satellite dish which was ungrounded and the standard antenna received the electricity. Its kind of sad when you just loose anything plugged into the house via AC. The only thing that survived the current may have been the Deep Freeze and something else. I believe the current entered through the satellite receiver from the dish, totally fried it; then exited through the power cord connected to the rest of the house to do the same.
Check your warranties because acts of God, may not be covered. Don't forget to ground your satellite either, or do one better and unplug the power it consumes from the wall during a thunder/lightning storm. - SwissCamel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Damn son, that house got ***** UP!
- davecor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yep... I stand there for hours and get rained on. Usually you photograph the storm as it approaches, so you see the lightshow before the rain arrives.
My current camera only takes exposures 15 seconds - but my film cameras could stay hours for hours. You take HUNDREDS of photos and get a few keepers.
It's part experience and a lot of luck - most of my best lightning photos are on film and not scanned - here is one that is handy -

I WISH I could get a shot from that close - I've been within a few hundred feet, but never with a camera... dammit. - Jozer99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is this one of those "positive" lightening bolts? It looks a lot bigger than a normal negative bolt, which are only an inch or two in diameter. It could just be overexposure washing out the area around the bolt.
- kb0x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"(Does anyone know if I can ask for the main topic URL to be changed?)"
Yeah, You can ask... It wont happen though.
Just do what everyone else does, plaster that page with adsense, Sit back and think about the money. - cuoops, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1heh, i submitted this 6hrs earlier...oh well
- sonofagunn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To me it looks like it could be hitting a tree behind the house.
- Medusausi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's AMAZING how that metal trailer just ripped that lighting bolt right out of the sky!
- Akronos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.glowfoto.com/static_image/02-162321L/1448/jpg/03/2007/img3/glowfoto
- giveaphuk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2FYI, this photo was taken in australia, saw it in one of our papers about 3 months ago..
- weister42, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I always wonder how peopel take photos of lightning strikes, do they stand there for hours waiting for something that happens in less than a second? How did he not go deaf from the thunder?
- ampersand2001, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2lightning bolt! lightning bolt!
- zjbird, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If this was real, are there photo's of the house afterwards?
- Vandelay797, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1^ you gotta ban this guy
- vroom101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@jhnewt, how about "The Best of the Lightning Pictures" section? Rated: Digg.com

- davecor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lighting is about 1/2 in diameter and is surrounded by a corona of ionized gas that is about 10 feet wide.

Photo and story of what happened - PoopSalad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Most of the lightning pictures I've seen are from long exposures (anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes) from cameras tripods pointing towards a storm.
- ncapone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0(°o°) That was A-Mazing!!!1
You know, not every picture is amazing! Or incredible...or shocking... - jockser, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i see you came here with your ferrari
- xSEED, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1pwnage
- vmstat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's totally hitting a tree. You can see it glowing.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1WAR OF THE WORLDS
- gurp13, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Why would anyone dig this down? It points to the story behind the photo. Though, you *do* have to scroll down and click a link, I don't think that's enough reason to digg it down. Besides, there's lots of other cool stuff on that page.
- bstew22, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1buried as duplicate.
- bridow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i think i see a pod (as in war of the worlds) :]
- Zappam, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Fake. I can do it with Paint Shop Pro X tubes, or something like that.
Why all the lightning pictures are violet? -
