- roedood, on 07/10/2009, -0/+29Take me down to the Paradise City where the grass is green and the girls are pretty.....No seriously folks, pollution is bad. Give a hoot,
- NiftyG, on 07/11/2009, -0/+11I was out there a few months ago. Trippy place. Kind of a 1960's ghost town. Lots of old waterfront resorts and homes from that era that are now abandoned and 50 feet from the water because the sea is evaporating.
As for the pollution - it's kind of hard to flush out the toxins when the Salton Sea has no outlet. Once toxins enter, they don't leave, and the evaporation just concentrates them more. - kingofinternet, on 07/11/2009, -0/+8wow, i thought vice was only good for hipster soft core porno.
fascinating documentary.
also: mushrooms on her ***** lungs?! - Nerolus, on 07/11/2009, -0/+7Unfortunately they were not 1UP mushrooms :(
- Shirleycakes, on 07/11/2009, -0/+6That place is awesome. Nothing like beaches covered in dead tilapia yet still the locals find the time to go fishing. The place absolutely reeks, Bombay Beach is like something out of "The Hills Have Eyes" and it's bordered on the east by the innocuously named "Chocolate Mountains", (which may sound like something from Super Mario World) which are a USAF live bomb testing range.
- Nerolus, on 07/11/2009, -0/+5It's an old school tactic used to get rid of old crops, weeds and weed seeds and re-new the land for new crops. Usually the fire department does it. It's also called a "controlled burn" or "slash and burn".
It ***** up the air when the crops have pollutants in it. Today they use other methods to get rid of old crops, but its usually more expensive and way more work. Except in weird cases like this place, though. They seem to not care for whatever reason (they being the local government). - womweasel, on 07/11/2009, -0/+5What I learned: "it's a valley because it's surrounded by mountains."
- kingofinternet, on 07/11/2009, -0/+5He seems pretty intelligent for a skater/rocker, and his barbecue technique was good.
- jrm125, on 07/11/2009, -3/+8Host looks like a (more) redneck Johnny Knoxville.
- BC200, on 07/11/2009, -1/+5I was interested in watching this until that guy started talking. Like, like, I dunno.
- MCA2142, on 07/11/2009, -1/+5I thought this was about Val Kilmer...
- Encephalon, on 07/11/2009, -0/+3He's right about the usage of orange juice to marinate carne asada. Citrus breaks down the meat and tenderizes it. Next time you prepare a steak, marinate it overnight in a fresh-squeezed orange and you'll be amazed at how tender it becomes.
- TooMuchPizza, on 07/11/2009, -1/+3He had to have said the word "like" at least 50 times in the first three minutes!
- bedake, on 07/11/2009, -0/+2http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slash_and_burn
- morepowerr, on 07/11/2009, -0/+2This would be a good place for land reclaim project.
- KingHarvest00, on 07/11/2009, -0/+2VBS does some good stuff. Wish they had the brains Rev3 does and let me subscribe on iTunes.
- Shirleycakes, on 07/11/2009, -0/+2People are trying. It's kind of a lost cause, but if the sea dries up then it turns into a giant dust-bowl that will cause unknown hell for the nearby communities, including Palm Springs.
- roddack, on 07/11/2009, -0/+2Garry the no trash cougar says give a larbage, throw out your garbage
- JinnRikki, on 07/11/2009, -0/+2Was interesting 'til dunebuggy guy says, "uuuhhh, I don't believe in global warming, 10,0000 butterflies,er, farts, uuuhhh. See ya!"
- darklich14, on 07/11/2009, -0/+2I think he was talking about mold. Maybe somewhere lost in translation that mold == fungus == mushrooms.
- Encephalon, on 07/11/2009, -0/+2I have a friend who travels the country on a regular basis and he told me that I should go visit Slab City sometime and chill out with the locals. Amazing people, he says.
- Shirleycakes, on 07/11/2009, -0/+2It's a cycle of death. The lack of oxygen in the water cause the fish to die either of suffocation or botulism, which gets spread to the birds that feed on the fish.
What part did you go to, or did you circle the whole thing? - inactive, on 07/11/2009, -3/+4Yea i know the perfect place for us to dump ***** RETARD W'S ranch in crawford and maybe your backyard you seem to be a sensible type UR you would'nt mind.
- d3dm, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1Best use of pigeons in a film ever.
- algorythm, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1That's where I buy my meth...
- eanbowman, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1Red == redneck.
I'm not from the US. :P
Reds are rednecks.
Also, who is focusing on one issue other than the aformentioned man? I was just pointing out a funny character in a documentary.
Swivelstick: At least I'm useful. ;) - eanbowman, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1"the environmentalist"?
Who are these environmentalists? - Swivelstick, on 07/11/2009, -1/+2I see a dick. I call it a dick.
- inactive, on 07/11/2009, -1/+2It doesnt refertilize the land, but it definitely does promote growth. So you are partly right. When i lived in the yukon, they would sometimes burn some of the paths in the woods to have it grow back with native, nicer looking plants.
However, burning every year is pointless. Actually burning is basically pointless unless you are infested with weeds or pests.
http://www.grit.com/Landscaping/Burning-Field-for- ... - Shirleycakes, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1I'd love to see the pictures, you has a flickr or something?
- user500, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1or in case of the locals why would one move next to a toxic sea then complain about it?
- NiftyG, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1Circled the whole thing as a photography project. Started before dawn to catch the light. It was amazing.
- MoonwalkingBird, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1The music makes it feel like a David Lynch movie.
- tcop, on 07/12/2009, -0/+0we need wastelands tp be able to appreciate paradise :)
- mrsinister2424, on 07/12/2009, -1/+1What the *****. I was expecting to see something with Fallout 3.... I'm disappointed. :(
Every time I see "wasteland" and "toxic," I think of fallout. - user500, on 07/11/2009, -1/+1the environmentalist in IL DEMAIND that the prairie grasses get burned annually. Want to save the planet kill the econuts.
- SquigglyP, on 07/12/2009, -2/+1red?
***** you, blue.
And for the record, focusing on just the one ***** issue - CO2 emissions and global warming - isn't going to help places like this at all. They're being polluted by chemicals and sewage. ***** global warming has nothing to do with it. In fact, most places would be helped more by preventing chemical pollution and water pollution than lowering CO2. CO2 can be dealt with by the planet. That's what trees are for. You want to help slow or eradicate global warming, go plant some trees. You want to help people living in areas like this, then fight to stop real pollution and stop wasting your efforts. - inactive, on 07/11/2009, -1/+0No UR im being honest have you been to that part of texas trust me its a ***** hole .....and you seem to love industry so you wouldnt mind an dump in your back yard.....or do you think your any better than the people who live next to the toxic sea ?
- URnotheonly1, on 07/11/2009, -3/+1Oh I know, why don't we just end industry so we don't have to deal with this? You like that?
- eanbowman, on 07/11/2009, -5/+2I seem to recall something about natives doing this to refirtilize the land. Is there any truth to that?
- eanbowman, on 07/11/2009, -6/+2So you bury me without answering my question? ***** you too. :C
So where did the practise of burning fields come from? - eanbowman, on 07/11/2009, -6/+1Wow, love the grey haired red who fully admits that instead of just nature now we have another huge source of CO2 production yet he doesn't put it together in his mind that more is not necessarily better. XD
I mean I'm not going to run out into the streets and say the sky is falling tomorrow but his logic is flawed. :|
I see a spade. I call it a spade. - inactive, on 07/11/2009, -9/+1Hey look a river! Piss in it yeah!
- URnotheonly1, on 07/11/2009, -10/+1buried. Not everywhere can be clean. World needs places to put *****, so deal with it. You have to have real expectations. Not everything can be like it was the day you found it.
