- novaneil, on 10/12/2007, -9/+36I've also heard that dihydrogen monoxide (DMHO) is incredibly dangerous for you as well. It can also be found everywhere.
- econoar, on 10/12/2007, -5/+24Flame retardants? If they give me the ability to walk through fires, I'm in!
- dawheelo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16In a related story, rates of spontaneous combustion has dropped dramatically . . .
- drbroccoli, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13It's a major component of acid rain.
- music2play1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@econoar
asbestos does that too - bremstrong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5From the article:
"After exposure to the flame retardant, the animals showed changes in motor activity and impaired learning, as well as decreased thyroid hormone levels in their blood. Thyroid function can affect metabolism and organ function throughout the body."
Any evidence of "impaired learning" in people? I've met some, hard to say the cause though.
The reasoning in some of the above posts is more evidence of "impaired learning". - wwjdwwmd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6The article doesn't state it at the end, but Apple has also banned PBDEs in their products.
http://www.apple.com/environment/materials/ - desu43fnoc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5That was the whole point of the article. This stuff is relatively modern (from the 70's, and has been increasing dramatically in use since), therefore we have yet to see the long-term effects of it.
The same thing happened with asbestos and lead paint. People thought it was fine for quite a while, but later saw that it was quite harmful. - LLeonard, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Also watch out for FMA's (Fear Mongering Articles)........they're everywhere
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Its impossible. Apples are "cool"
- desu43fnoc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Well I suppose the more technological we get the more dangerous chemicals we encounter, but that also means our medical systems get better as well. We will soon reach a point when we can no longer keep up in the medical department though...
- eam52guy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Only that they're harmful if present in sufficient quantities. Like just about every other chemical, synthetic or naturally occuring.
- Vision2098, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2PDBEs give me the heebie jeebies.
- michelrose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Doubtful info... I'm surprised.
- jcaino, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6@novaneil
yea, that stuff is REALLY dangerous. Too little and you die. Too much and you die. A few milliliters can kill you.
It's responsible (both directly and indirectly) for numerous deaths each year.
We need to start a parents watch group! Think about the chillun! - lindapuzhgena, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Quite strange Things like this happen everywhere. http://fishtalks.blogspot.com
- biddessa, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Impossible! I've never thought it is for real. http://teapedia.blogspot.com
- wwjdwwmd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4
- yakizz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Very useful. Such things make me a bit crazy
- dacheetah, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Wait, didn't an apple laptop spontaneously combust? (I know at least two dells have, but I thought an apple did as well).
- JWGunn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Did anyone else get the "Babies were born to be breastfed" ad.
wikipedia article, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PBDE
about.com article, http://chemistry.about.com/cs/medical/a/aa102603a.htm
And who are http://www.hearstcorp.com/ and http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/ - MrSpookyPants, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1so has anybody gotten sick or died from this stuff? if not, then what's up with the panic piece?
- futureisours, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1oh and here I thought this was satire, apparently not, just a fear-mongering article. very silly as we all know the real threat is terrorists that are in your schools and bombing your kids.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0OMFG! PBDE! DDT! TNT! HH0! C02! O3! CYA! IMHO BTW, LMAO, NM, BRB!
PFFFFFFFFT!!! - MasterChi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Hmm PDBE's could be at a toxic level for us in 3 to 5 years from what the article states, interesting. I say we also ban Cigarette's, they have been killing us on a regular basis for over 50 years. IMO a ban and closure of all cigarette's and cigarette manufacturer's will save millions and help decrease pollution and the waste of cigarette butt's on streets and sidewalks and anywhere else those lazy bastards throw them when they finished their puff.
- dacheetah, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1FTA: "One firefighter says he can smell the smoke and contaminants in his clothes -- even his moustache -- for hours or days after a big blaze."
So? I can smell the foul smell of cigarette smoke on my clothes for hours, even days after going to a pub, and the smoke in a pub is fairly thin. After a camp-fire the smoke smell stays in clothes until they are washed. The kind of fires that firefighter battle are going to have a LOT more smoke, so of course you'll be able to smell it for a while afterwards. I don't see what this has to do with PBDEs though.
And so far I'd suggest that more lives have been saved by PDBEs than have been negatively affected by them. I'd prefer to know that if I have to escape a burning house my clothes are not going to ignite like petrol soaked rags, even if it means that a chemical, that so far has not proven to have any negative effects has built up to a slightly higher level. (Sure there is evidence that when they DO burn they release carcinogens, but so does plastic, as well as MANY other things used in everyday household objects. As long as you don't burn them they are safe. And isn't the entire point of a flame retardant chemical to reduce the chance of fire?) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1That would explain the alarming decline in cases of spontaneous human combustion!
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1A ban on doing anything vaguely dangerous like driving or talking to strangers would save millions of lives a year! Let's get on it! I need the police state to tell me what to do, I'm afraid of life!
- Samsong, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Sissies....
- DscHmi3, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1This is great! In a few years stop, drop, and roll will be a thing of the past.
- jhnewt, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1I don't see how having more PBDEs could have any negative consequences.
- eskador, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0Cool, fireproof people.
- greenlight2001, on 10/12/2007, -16/+8Thats been beaten to death already. Water. Yes, very funny.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -15/+4it's too late, you people are digging him up so now I'm going to start using that to teach you not to pamper childish humor.
