- fabkebab, on 02/12/2009, -6/+24This article implies that oil companies have recently "changed thier tune" - but this is innacurate -
A report was published by the National Petroleum Council (www.npc.org), a group led by all the big names in oil and gas in 2007- One of their primary conclusions was to introduce carbon trading and encourage vehicle efficiencies.
I am sure I am going to get buried for even mentioning this party-pooping story - but go and see it for yourself - the chairman for the report was the former CEO of ExxonMobil - Nauree, on 02/12/2009, -1/+18Oil Industry, "Now that we have established various methods for conservation we will implement them asap."
50 years later...
Oil Industry, "We are now ready to implement energy conservation." - martoq, on 02/12/2009, -3/+19"...to work with President Obama to tackle global warming."
I just that into babelfish and had it translate from ***** to english.
"...we no longer have the support of the White House to rape its citizens dry and are now adjusting our direction to continue our unholy rapeage." - chkdg8, on 02/12/2009, -1/+16The words Oil Industry and Tackle Global Warming in the same sentence is the biggest oxymoron.
- anexanhume, on 02/12/2009, -2/+16Ladies and gentlemen, we are all seated upon a gigantic chimney, and the oil execs are blowing and blowing.

- Spartacusprime, on 02/12/2009, -3/+15This is just opportunism. The political winds are changing and they want to keep making sure Washington does what is best for Big Oil.
- SilverBlade2k, on 02/12/2009, -6/+15They just want a more "green" image, when their only product (oil) is not green by nature..

Forgive me for being just a tad skeptical when it comes to the oil companies claiming they are supportive of this endeavor - climatemaven, on 02/12/2009, -3/+11While I'm glad to see the oil industry coming to grips with climate change (and a few have been real leaders, investing in renewables, etc), I am cautious of Exxon's new move away from skepticism and towards a carbon tax. Much of the academic economic work on a carbon tax suggest it would be set far lower in the US than necessary to halt emissions, in part because 'tax' in the US is such a lightening rod. I don't see new found concern for the environment so much as a careful planning to ensure the policy impacts them as little as possible or fails entirely.
Still - this should lay to rest some concerns that climate change is a plot by a few kooky scientists. Exxon clearly understands anthropogenic climate change is real and happening - they're just not terribly concerned with making sure they're an energy company of the future, low-carbon economy. Sounds a bit like Detroit frankly. - QsheiK, on 02/12/2009, -1/+9Yea. Cause heaven knows they got the money for it.
Damn crooks. - cheezintern, on 02/12/2009, -1/+9and by tackle global warming they mean they're gonna partner with the coal industry to make lots of commercials saying how green they are.
- inactive, on 02/12/2009, -7/+14***** Big Oil and the SUV they rode in on.
- Nerys, on 02/12/2009, -1/+8Bull *****. Explain why Chevron REFUSES to license the Large Format NIMH battery patent that GM sold to them for Electric Cars ?
Nough said. - jackdaniels06, on 02/12/2009, -1/+7I remember a quote from CEO of ExxonMobil and I'll paraphrase it as this. "The only green we care about are greenbacks." Something to that effect. It was a feature article I read either in Forbes or Fortune in the last couple of years. Google Search it.
- davidg11, on 02/12/2009, -2/+8What do oil companies do best?
DRILL
What source of energy is cheap, green, closed loop, no emissions or pollution that requires drilling?
Geothermal.
This isn't rocket science. Drill into hot deep water aquifers instead of oil and let that steam turn tubines.
You're welcome oil industry. I've saved you.
If interested, look at RZ or ORA to invest in. I'm sure an oil company willy buy them out one of these years once the lightbulb goes on. - davidhopkins, on 02/12/2009, -1/+7And take their own sweet time doing so. They want to be part of the discussion, so they can control the agenda.
- Trent1492, on 02/12/2009, -2/+8Your asserting it is not does not make it so.
- Dweller99, on 02/12/2009, -3/+9Of course you have a citation for that, right?
- thethingisgav, on 02/12/2009, -2/+7Of course! They just want some of that massive green energy fund.....

- orlyfactor, on 02/13/2009, -0/+5Just like the tobacco industry had those ads to fight teen smoking? rofl.
- 2Serve, on 02/13/2009, -1/+5What a joke. These people buried so many innovative technologies to keep us on oil, yet, they want to make themselves out to be part of the solution to todays problems caused by their products. Seriously, once a liar, always a liar. As far as I can tell, the other economic super powers are trying to break-away from fossil fuels and going Renewable -- China, Japan, and many European countries are trying to make the right kind of changes; for this, I applaud them. The oil industry can put up as many commercials as they want in attempt to sway my view of them -- it's useless. To me, they will continue to be the scourge of the Earth.
- IKORKYI, on 02/12/2009, -1/+5if they didnt increase fuel efficiency, alternative energy would carry more and more support, and oil wold die. i doubt they did it for the environment
- Shellius, on 02/14/2009, -0/+4Of course they SAY that, but they are pushing the faux "clean coal". Have you noticed all the ads lately? They are also calling coal -to liquid gas "clean!" Don't trust them!
- CYCLEORDIE, on 02/15/2009, -0/+3dugg for douglas adams ref
- TheMoniker, on 02/13/2009, -2/+5There are no proofs outside of a few areas of logic and math. With that said there are unfathomably large mountains of data clearly showing that anthropogenic global warming is very real. I refer you to any peer reviewed journal on the subject (e.g. Geophysical Research Letters, Journal of Climate, etc.).
- Swivelstick, on 02/12/2009, -2/+5Which means nothing if it wasn't introduced and that this was nothing more then a PR stunt otherwise they would not of bitched and moaned when other countries introduced such a scheme but now that wind has changed in the US..
- CYCLEORDIE, on 02/15/2009, -0/+3we have the technology to provide all out energy needs via renewable sources. The free market won't fix these problems because the major players are heavily invested in current infrastructure. The industry lobbyists inhibit political solutions to these problems. They could be sincere, but I sincerely doubt it given their recent history of greenwashing their image through advertising. We need government to step in and regulate the ***** out of our power grid. This goes against popular opinion as people fear socialism. Remember that it took government stepping in after so many people died from the windshields of cars and lack of seat belts. Like it or not the oil industry is very comfortable in its mega profits and won't change unless government forces them.. which means we need to force the government.
- CYCLEORDIE, on 02/15/2009, -0/+3Oil execs to obama " Hey mr president, green is the new black. we're changing for sure. You should reward us by opening up oceanic drilling"
- bobhiggins, on 02/14/2009, -0/+3Is that the same global warming that they have spent millions denying in advertising or paying "scientific" shills to deny for them?
- Nerys, on 02/12/2009, -1/+4Your logic is flawed. My explanation is not crystal clear or directly analogous but it should give the right idea.
There is no "DIRECT" viable alternative to bullets that is also SUPERIOR to bullets.
THERE IS a direct superior alternative to OIL and the oil companies ACTIVELY get in the way of these technologies. Such as when GM sold Texaco/Chevron the patent for large format NIMH batteries and they now REFUSE to license them for any electric car usage or any usage that might be convertible to electric car usage.
so in this case the logic fails. Big Oil "IS" responsible partly for the end result of there products because they ACTIVELY take steps to PREVENT the mass adoption of technologies that CAN in fact replace oil are can be SUPERIOR to oil that would NOT cause damage.
SO if you come up with a cheaper better superior alternative to bullets and then GET IN THE WAY of using that replacement intentionally then YES you would hold SOME responsibility for the damage those bullets do.
The gun industry is not doing this
big oil IS. - kindpastor, on 02/13/2009, -0/+3Most regulations that affect a specific industry are molded and shaped by members of that industry since these specific issues are not zeroed in on by the voting masses, but are systematically targeted by the industries lobbying and law-making efforts. It's not uncommon for members of an industry to even WRITE some of the legislation that effects that industry.
- dnacid, on 02/14/2009, -0/+3And in other news, pedobear states that he is ready to tackle the little kids.

- Thex1138, on 02/13/2009, -1/+4Desperado's trying to stave off the hydrogen and renewables industries...
Next up will be the coal industries head on the block! - Axeman2063, on 02/13/2009, -0/+3Joel Bakan said it best in the book "The Corporation: The Pathological Pursuit of Profit and Power".....
I'm paraphrasing, but he basically states that the sole purpose of the corporation is to maximize profit for the shareholders, with all other goals being secondary. In this situation, the environment is one of the hot button issues of today. Oil companies are seeing that and know if they at least make a show of green policies and initiatives, their popularity - and profit - will increase regardless of how effective these same policies are in reducing global warming.
Call me a skeptic, but this is all lip service. When the environmental movement disappears, so will the corporations plans to change. - chinaman1212, on 02/12/2009, -2/+5That would be a wise idea on there part.
- pumanegra2012, on 02/13/2009, -0/+2Sing with the tune
- Nerys, on 02/13/2009, -0/+2And thats fine they are ALLOWED and ENCOURAGED to think that way. They are a for profit corporation it is the american way.
I do not have a problem with that.
but you should not be allowed to USE the system to INHIBIT advancement to keep your existing profit source.
If you can make YOUR tech competitive with it fine but to buy up bury or propagandize other tech to RETAIN your tech's advantage should be illegal. - Nerys, on 02/13/2009, -0/+2You are evil then buddy Chevron is the only reason we do not have electric cars right now :-) (ok your not evil but chevron is :-)
- Nerys, on 02/13/2009, -0/+2Because sometimes its better the get shoved asside by the bull than take one of the horns straight on.
