- newmedusa, on 11/10/2008, -1/+19Not octopi. Words that end in -us in the singular and -i in the plural are second declension words from Latin; -us and -i are just the declinable endings. Octopus is, however, a Greek word meaning eight (octo) foot/feet (pus). The -us is part of the -pus, not just its own ending.
So, if you're going to be classically pretentious, it's octopodes -- but octopuses is perfectly acceptable.
/classics and biology major who also tutors english grammar... - JonesJohnson, on 11/10/2008, -4/+12singular = octopus
plural = octopi
Right? I've never had to actually say 'octopi' before, but if you think about it ... wait, what? - inactive, on 11/09/2008, -0/+7Dugg for extremely creepy creatures

- oda1, on 11/10/2008, -0/+4Did you know Octupuses (isn't it Octupi?) are extremely smart creatures? They'd probably take over the world, if it weren't for one disadvantage; Their life span. Which averages about 2-3 years on most species.

and with strange aeons, even death may die. - batfink3312, on 11/10/2008, -0/+3From Oed:
Although it is often supposed that octopi is the 'correct' plural of octopus, and it has been in use for longer than the usual Anglicized plural octopuses, it in fact originates as an error. Octopus is not a simple Latin word of the second declension, but a Latinized form of the Greek word oktopous, and its 'correct' plural would logically be octopodes - Wargasmic, on 11/10/2008, -0/+3We need to genetically modify them to grow skeletons, skin that won't dry out, and longer life spans.

- eleraama, on 11/24/2008, -0/+1...Am I the only one who was under the impression that there was a single creature that most deep-sea octopuses descended from that was, in fact, still alive in the southern sea?
