- Fabbyfubz, on 11/13/2008, -0/+22Fallout 3?
- Bluetar, on 11/12/2008, -3/+25I'll take the nukes.
- Nimphious, on 11/13/2008, -0/+13Personally, I still await the day we substantially increase the efficiency of extracting electrical energy from radioactive objects, and create batteries that are 5% the size, and last for 20 years or longer, outputting the same power or higher.
Nevertheless, this is a good step in the direction of more efficient batteries, both in power potential/size ratio, and power output/heat. - spyd3rweb, on 11/13/2008, -2/+13How about a bittorrent like network of solar panels on everyones roofs.
- KMye, on 11/13/2008, -1/+11"It's also not a terror risk, says the company; to enrich the fuel to weapons-grade, you'd need “nation-state resources.”"
- darkGaz, on 11/13/2008, -0/+9That's the first step to the production of Micro-Fusion Cells, right? Laser Rifle here I come!
- TheWilder, on 11/13/2008, -0/+9I was half-expecting this to be a Fallout 3 article.
- Kishoba, on 11/13/2008, -0/+8Please stop calling Nuclear Reactors Nukes. It only goes to further the misconstrued ideas about Nuclear Energy.
I personally would put one near my backyard. I've lived next to a Nuclear Reactor my whole life and am rather proud of that fact, especially when the government refuses to allow any development of new reactors. - Murdats, on 11/13/2008, -2/+9because you can not run your entire house off a solar panel.
- austang, on 11/13/2008, -0/+7We need an arc reactor from Iron man
- inactive, on 11/13/2008, -2/+9NWA made a song about that didn't they? "I gota ..nuke in my Yard ...and a ***** Fuel cell in my pocket!"
- inactive, on 11/13/2008, -3/+8How about a solar panel on my roof and call it a day.
- inactive, on 11/13/2008, -1/+5So what do you suggest you do to power the nation?
- Solkre, on 11/13/2008, -0/+4Too many leeches, not enough seeds.
- staticneuron, on 11/13/2008, -0/+3The Unemployed? So if by the odd chance you become unemployed would you like to be on that wheel being chased by criminals?
- MacParrot, on 11/13/2008, -0/+3I suppose you COULD...until it gets dark
- lastmaster, on 11/13/2008, -0/+3Midgar full of flowers, wallet full of money.
- bemenaker, on 11/13/2008, -0/+3Another idea for these self contained units, is enough power to drive a powerful enough ION engine to make it to Mars in six months.
- KMye, on 11/13/2008, -1/+3Is that supposed to be an argument against these? Iran doesn't have enough uranium of its own (which it does), so they'd buy these reactors @ $ 25m a pop, through back channels as the US obviously wouldn't let them buy them directly, for the small bit of uranium in each one?
- MacParrot, on 11/13/2008, -0/+2I'd like a 40-gigwatt plasma rifle...
HEY! Just what you see pal - Rudegar, on 11/13/2008, -0/+2who saying that i'm not being chased already ? :O
- sugarkang, on 11/13/2008, -0/+2awesome. we need to get rid of coal NOW
- JoeVerrone, on 11/13/2008, -0/+2I read the article and it seems a little too good to be true. From what I read there are absolutely no dangers to this device and it sounds a little too much like a miracle. A mini nuclear reactor that never needs maintenance, can never melt down and lasts 10 years?
- zacharytelschow, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1"But me thinks a combination of green alternatives like wind, water and sun might be more viable, both economically and legally."
Have you examined the economics of green energy? There's no way in hell you're knocking on the door of 10 cents per kilowatt/hour. - zacharytelschow, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1Yea, we need to get rid of the source of half our electricity, NOW! WHOOOOO!
Great idea. - zacharytelschow, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1Exactly what we need: solutions that can actually work.
- floorman56, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1Go a head then ... If you don't have one now why don't you? ..That reason is why very few people do
- zacharytelschow, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1To power 1/3 of a light bulb?
- neocreo, on 11/13/2008, -1/+2I have been waiting for something like this for ages. Now when I own a house I want to make myself independent from electricity companies too. But me thinks a combination of green alternatives like wind, water and sun might be more viable, both economically and legally.
somehow the nuclear reactor made me think of Young Einstein where he splits atoms in his toolshed to produce bubbly beer. Ah, classic australian humor.
'course missed the classic
"Is that a fuel-cell in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?" - inactive, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1***** off fastcompany.com.. we will not tolerate your lame publicity attempts..
- Bronz, on 11/13/2008, -1/+2...Make a little birdhouse in your soul!
Sing-along:
"Not to put too fine a point on it
Nukes In Your Yard and Fuel Cells In Your Pocket
Make a little birdhouse in your soul" - nowhereelse, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1Did I miss something in this article or did the fuel cell people fail to mention how you store the hydrogen it uses?
- rheaume, on 11/13/2008, -2/+3What a safe sounding title
- levitron, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1I'm your only friend, I'm not your only friend,
But I'm your little glowing friend,
But really I'm not actually your friend,
But I am. - floorman56, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1Not your daddy's nuke
My feeling for what its worth is they are like the the " nuke batteries" that are on space probes. Just MUCH bigger - bemenaker, on 11/14/2008, -0/+1To my understanding, power is our only real limitation on them at the moment.
- KingKeys, on 11/13/2008, -1/+2Bingo Bango Bungle I don't want to leave the Congo...
- stockjones, on 11/14/2008, -0/+1There is a bit of irony about the pursuit of Nuclear energy these days. There was a time when Nuclear energy was not seen as being very green due to the waste left behind. So being that everyone is trying to go more green and look for alternative fuel sources what do we say about nuclear waste now? And this waste is radioactive and lasts decades.
- zacharytelschow, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1Yea, I suppose it takes a ton more uranium to produce power than it does coal, oil, or natural gas. Oh wait...
- ASSASSYN360, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1Does this mean I can tranfer my level 20 fallout 3 character to real life.
- Jarasmen, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1First we'll have Fallout 1...
- bouche, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1oh! That's what micro-fusion cells are for! I'm going to start hording them for my future laser rifle.
- Fustigations, on 11/14/2008, -0/+1Huh? Looks to me like Chaotix' comment is more conservative than liberal. Although sunshine is actually a viable (if too expensive / invasive at this point) alternative... I suppose we could bio-engineer unicorns in a pinch. We could burn them in a furnace to power a steam plant.
- Fustigations, on 11/14/2008, -0/+1I clicked some links and found a picture of the cell that said 20wh. at .5 to .75 watts, it would last 30 to 40 hours. I couldn't find anything about recharging it (not that I looked that long). Seems a waste to just toss it out, but might be problematic to recharge an explosive gas... maybe they have some bugs to work out...
- zacharytelschow, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1Probably not cost effective due to the increased food required to give the criminals energy to run that long. Plus, we don't want ultra-fit criminals leaving prison angry and able to run all day.
Now, if you wanted to talk about making fat people run to produce electricity, I could get into that. It solves our energy and obesity problems all in one go. - Chaotix, on 11/14/2008, -1/+1I'm actually extreme left, truth be told. In fact, I'd be the worst President ever, because I'd damn us all to hell before seeing the world environment collapse as it is doing.
My comment was more to do with the impracticality of having nuclear devices in our backyard more than anything. If _anything_ were to go wrong (plane crash, digging before looking, etc) and entire city block could be contaminated with nuclear waste and debris. That, and yes - Iran could acquire these and refine them (duh).
Personally, I'd prefer my solar panel, wind turbine, or geothermal device get damaged than my personal nuke. Wouldn't you? - zacharytelschow, on 11/13/2008, -1/+1That's the beauty of being a liberal: you can object to any realistic solution without offering an alternative. We can probably power our country on sunshine, unicorns, and happiness.
- FDisk, on 11/13/2008, -2/+2Homer?
