- AFelsinger, on 11/19/2008, -0/+76i demand nike and starbucks start treating their overseas workers with respect
- manzplan, on 11/20/2008, -2/+53If these places wanted to make a difference they could
Starbucks could charge $1 LESS if you use your OWN MUG.. or try using RAINFOREST GROWN COFFEE ONLY
Nike could make shoes out of Bamboo and natural fibers only
this is just a show.. I am not fooled.. - doiveo, on 11/19/2008, -2/+29I was in Starbucks the other day and realized there is no reason that the company couldn't eliminate internal garbage. All the cups, lids and bags could be made out of compostable materials. A garbage can would still be available to customers for outside object but the rest would go in a collection system.
Imagine the statement that would make. - jerryjamesstone, on 11/19/2008, -0/+18Yah, I was wondering about that too. Are we gonna have sweatshop greenwashing?
- Ghoztt, on 11/20/2008, -1/+15Starbucks supports massive deforestation in order to support its consumer whores, then asks the government to act on climate change?
Just sounds like a half assed pass to make the public think our masters really care. - sustainablogger, on 11/19/2008, -4/+17This isn't the first time companies have come together to make such a demand of Congress... however, after the transition, the political will to implement serious policy may just be there... fingers crossed.
- DamnMan, on 11/20/2008, -1/+14I Call *****. Most of these companies products are produced overseas in countries that don't subscribe to Kyoto or any sort of climate change stuff. What this really sounds like is a way for them to get congress to squeeze the ***** out of locally producing competitors.
- Julie188, on 11/19/2008, -2/+14These guys are so right. We need to pass a law and if the Earth doesn't cool it, we'll arrest her.
- adamroach, on 11/20/2008, -1/+13In other news another Nike sweatshop opens.
- jerryjamesstone, on 11/19/2008, -4/+15I love that the coalition is called BICEP - tee hee.
- mbraynard, on 11/20/2008, -6/+17This is totally gay.
I'd love to see Congress Respond: "We hear your demand and have decided to reduce the nation's carbon footprint, starting with shutting your companies down." - jerryjamesstone, on 11/19/2008, -5/+15Ah, ignorance is...well, ignorant.
- BigVi, on 11/20/2008, -0/+10Wasnt Starbucks just busted wasting a ton of water at each of their stores?
- ninernick, on 11/20/2008, -1/+10I agree 100%.
Starbucks is responsible for both treating coffee growers like *****, and selling crappy coffee.
Buy Fair Trade, and good coffee. - Autodidaddict, on 11/20/2008, -1/+10PR at its finest
corporations are good at making money. that's it.
some corporations can lessen their impacts or be fortunate enough to be in a sector where their practices don't have dramatic everyday environmental impacts. Take google for example. It's easy to have a "do no evil" motto when you don't have to dispose of chemicals, chop down rain forests, employ minimum wage labor, etc. - djm0027, on 11/20/2008, -1/+8Why doesn't Starbucks first start by having recycling at their stores for all of the cardboard cups and plastic ones they throw everyday?
- davidjunit, on 11/20/2008, -0/+7Doesn't Nike use labor in Asia? I bet those places are just super tight about enforcing proper disposal of their waste byproducts.
STFU Nike. - VibhuC812, on 11/20/2008, -0/+7If they called it BOOBIES, they'd have digg's unanimous support, I bet.
- Richandler, on 11/20/2008, -0/+6Dear Congress,
Please steal other peoples money to save the environment so that we don't have to.
Thanks! - fakeXsound, on 11/20/2008, -1/+7Nike should be that LAST company (or at least one of the last) to tell anyone anything about ethical subjects.
Starbucks = greenwash. - askantik, on 11/20/2008, -1/+7Amen. Also, another thing that's funny, my girlfriend's brother bought a bag of organic coffee at Starbucks. A couple days later, he went in there and asked for a cup of the same coffee. Their response? We don't brew any organic coffee-- we only sell it. rofl...
- bradkovach, on 11/20/2008, -0/+5You may use your own cup at any Starbucks you visit. Baristas are not allowed to touch the LID of your cup. They will rinse your cup with hot water and proceed to make your drinks.
Also, in meetings the other day, Starbucks employees around the world were asked to stop using paper cups for drinks served in the store. If you want to make a difference about paper consumption, ask for a ceramic cup. Also, baristas have been asked to stop using paper cups for "partner (Starbucks-speak for employee) beverages."
I will not, however, call Starbucks a GREEN corporation. They don't recycle. They do provide "Grounds for your Garden."
Plus, Starbucks is rolling out a huge lineup of Starbucks + (PRODUCT) RED drinks very soon. All holiday drinks and some other drinks will donate 5 cents per dollar from these drinks to help provide AIDS retrovirus pills in Africa.
I'm pretty sure I violated my NDA by publishing all that. I realize that Starbucks might not serve the best coffee in the world, but they DO try to go about business ethically. I'm provided health insurance as a part-time employee and I'm given one free pound of coffee every week. - Trekhawk, on 11/20/2008, -1/+6No, no. We need to fine the Earth for its reckless warming...or cooling...or stable temperature. This Climate Change dichotomy has me so confused.
- FolkTheory, on 11/20/2008, -1/+6Silly Corporations, Congress is for People.
- vbullinger, on 11/20/2008, -0/+5It's so strange that it took so long for someone to look at this critically - people should've been calling on this BS on comment one.
Let's get this straight: THESE COMPANIES DON'T EVER DO ANYTHING TO BENEFIT ANYONE BUT THEMSELVES. THEY WILL SAY AND DO ANYTHING TO GET WHAT THEY WANT.
As many have mentioned in this thread, if they really wanted to do something for the environment, they'd act from within. What they're really advocating is giving more power to a handful of people at the top of the government that they have in their own back pockets. This falls right in line with it. Do not trust them at all. - tobb555, on 11/20/2008, -0/+5What the hell does a company that uses child labor and a company that makes coffee for yuppies give a ***** about the climate?
- Gemfinder, on 11/20/2008, -0/+5***** the sweatshop, Oregon's hemorrhaging jobs!
Nike, COME HOME!! - kjd84, on 11/20/2008, -0/+5NIKE: "ACT ON CLIMATE CHANGE SO WE DON'T HAVE TO MOVE OUR SWEATSHOPS!"
- inactive, on 11/20/2008, -1/+5In other news, anyone on Capitol Hill who votes in favor of climate change action will receive a free latte and new pair of shoes.
- anarchyinthekr, on 11/20/2008, -0/+4move in the direction of the reply button
- askantik, on 11/20/2008, -0/+4We already do :(
- silent7seven, on 11/20/2008, -0/+4Wasn't there just a story on digg about Starbucks running the tap all day long?
- BigRed24, on 11/20/2008, -1/+5for some reason I really dont believe they care
- Gemfinder, on 11/20/2008, -0/+4Congress to Nike: "Nike! You got it, but meet us halfway. Bring your manufacturing facilities Stateside! Trust us, the Chinese will survive without you!"
- tgc1, on 11/20/2008, -0/+4The Earth has nothing to do with it. It's the Sun you fools.
- jojopumpkin, on 11/20/2008, -0/+4May I make a few changes?
Dear Congress,
Please steal other peoples money to pretend to save the environment and instead give the money to the banks and their friends.
Thanks! - bradkovach, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3Hello, fellow partner.
You forgot to mention that coffee served in the store isn't organic because we cannot certify that ALL ground coffee that is dispensed is organic without washing the grinder after every grinding. It's simply easier to use the disclaimer "Coffee is no longer certified organic after passing through our grinders." Resolution: grind at home in your clean grinder for certified organic coffee.
Also, leaving the tap running all day (for the dip wells) does waste a lot of water. In my store, we are told to leave the dip wells OFF when we aren't preparing drinks. Also, I've never really understood the phrase "wasting water." Ever hear of the water cycle? It'll be reused.
And, if any company understands the power of great PR, it's Starbucks. When they dispatched 10,000 store managers to help build houses in New Orleans, they knew what those powerfully-staged photo opportunities would do. (Apparently, they did get something done.)
Also, this PRODUCT RED business is just an excuse for Howard Schultz (our CEO) and Bono to get together and drink four-dollar coffee in Uncle Howie's private Starbucks. - lemmingboi, on 11/20/2008, -1/+4Way to go Nike! Maybe next year you can push for an anti-child labor law in China. . . What's that you say? Oh right. . .
- ngower, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3lol, I work for Starbucks and we don't recycle, yet we're pushing for a better environment?
- tgc1, on 11/20/2008, -1/+4PR stunt?
- CTRaiderThe1st, on 11/19/2008, -19/+22Marketing Tools for the Tools that believe in man made climate change and believe this BS.
- scybeam, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3Wow, demand? Really? Can they tell me how ANY company should be able to demand ANYTHING from the government?
Last I checked, citizens, not corporations, are supposed to dictate the government's agenda. - AbsurdParadox, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3It is unfortunate that I need to boycott Starbucks now. Goodbye White Chocolate Mocha :(
- zirce, on 04/04/2009, -0/+3Agreed. The only thing cooler than a coalition called BOOBIES? A coalition of boobies.
- inactive, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3could not have said it better,
oh and starbucks, shut the ***** up about the enviroment until you can provide a good enough reason as to why you place multiple stores within a 5 mile radius, sometimes within visible distance form one another. ease up on the ***** real estate, you're as bad as walmart and Mctasteslikecardboard. oh and make some decent coffee for christs sake. - DorXtar, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2You forgot the bit about how you leave the tap running all day.
- OwdenBowden, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2So let me get this straight - Each one of these company's has a major connection to China (as well as other Asian manufacturing) and they are demanding change in our climate and energy policy? So they are some of the largest offenders of climate related issues solely because they use Asian manufacturing which is now responsible for and is basically is one giant ***** cloud of crap.
Tell you what - Have a Coke and a Smile, Get off your Ivory Towers, and shut the ***** up. - junkwheel, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2Nikes overseas employment practice:
1) Turn up to some new area which has a gazillion people who need work. 'Need' being the operative word.
2) All the people go ape *****, awesome, a job! I can feed my family!
3) Work goes on for a while with everyone happy
4) Initial ape ***** extravaganza dies.
5) Workers naturally get more comfortable, start seeing how ***** the conditions are, want better conditions and better pay.
6) Nike shuts down the factory and goes to some other place. - Nlewis4, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2climate change is so last week
- hdias123, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2How about Starbucks first turning off the cold water tap that runs endlessly the whole day in all its stores and wastes 23 million liters of water daily. http://earthfirst.com/starbucks-wastes-234-million ...
