- axalon, on 12/21/2008, -4/+87Bad ass...if only they'd fix the subways now
- da233, on 12/21/2008, -4/+47Nice, maybe New Yorkers will be able to see 5 stars in the night sky instead of just 3.
- swordedge, on 12/21/2008, -3/+26to star gaze, move to Hollywood unless you mean distant suns... then move to the absolute boonies. Even rural America has too much light pollution to do much gazing.
- Bloake, on 12/21/2008, -3/+23Doesn't even look bright enough... I guess that fixes the light pollution, too.
- Gemfinder, on 12/21/2008, -3/+22[Doing the happy dance w/MorganMghee]
Now if only city engineers can do something about light pollution. I want to stargaze from my balcony. - Renton, on 12/21/2008, -2/+21LEDs last a lot longer, saving money in upkeep. Sodium light's efficiency also drop as time goes on.
Plus LEDs look a lot nicer. They can produce white light which is picked up easier to the human eye, instead of that ugly brown. - CLShortFuse, on 12/21/2008, -0/+182 more pics and more information:

With the MTA you can travel all the way out to Queens, Uptown, Downtown, Coney Island and everywhere inbetween for only $2! - MorganMghee, on 12/21/2008, -6/+23WOOOOOO!! JUMPING UP AND DOWN!! WOOOOOO!!!
- Gemfinder, on 12/21/2008, -2/+19Especially that flaming hobo problem.
- stonewall123, on 12/21/2008, -0/+16Which is why outdoor public lighting should be directed downward where it is useful instead of into the sky. Its a waste of energy and $$ to not use light more efficiently.
- ICSU, on 12/22/2008, -0/+14You can see 3 stars where you live?
- etoiles, on 12/21/2008, -5/+17What are the advantages of those LED street lights? Sodium lights are still much more energy efficient... are LEDs more durable?
- seeyouinteatime, on 12/22/2008, -3/+14How can a homeless person afford a gay lifestyle at a time like this?
- akchrs, on 12/21/2008, -1/+12I believe the LED's last longer but you are correct about any energy savings. We have High Pressure Sodium lights at my workplace surrounding the property and they are high volt but low wattage, I believe they only use 40 watts. But they are very bright.
- krahzee, on 12/21/2008, -0/+10You mean one of the best subway systems in the world? The one that runs 24/7 365?
- wtfkeyhole2pro, on 12/21/2008, -0/+10i wonder where in nyc it is located.... :)
i'd like to go and see it - o0dhacker0o, on 12/22/2008, -0/+9When I see the words 'one day', I assume it won't be for years and years and years. Let me know when it's finally all done....
- inactive, on 12/22/2008, -0/+8Under the glow of an LED you can tell exactly which hookers have which STDs. The ones that glow purple have old fashioned herpes while the ones that glow bright red have HIV, stay away from those!
It's science! - gr00vy, on 12/21/2008, -1/+9You are seeing a 30 hz "buzz". They are LE-Diodes and can only pass electricity in one direction. There are ways that you can engineer these so that they wont "buzz" as much. But the simplest circuits are the ones that cause this kind of behavior.
- minnymoo, on 12/21/2008, -2/+10keep the hobos out of this.
- gavintlgold, on 12/21/2008, -1/+9Giant mirrors which reflect all the light back down! How 'bout that?
- Daniel591992, on 12/21/2008, -1/+9How about just keeping it clean. That's all people want. Really. The thing is disgusting.
- Pahtcub, on 12/21/2008, -0/+7But where will the moths hang out?
- vskylabv, on 12/21/2008, -1/+8yeah seriously
- clemsontiger, on 12/21/2008, -1/+8LED's are great at energy saving, but they have a long way to go before they are to be used to area lighting. I work for Hubbell and we inspected a lighting job done by one of our competitors for Wal Mart and the lumen output was shameful for the premium paid for the lights. The glare is horrible as well. They are close, but not quite ready for area lighting.
- ricksite, on 12/21/2008, -1/+8From the article: "Of course, LEDs are just plain awesome! Their power consumption is much lower than that of standard bulbs. Heck, even lower than that of CFLs."
@etoiles I don't know why you are being dugg down. Apparently they are replacing the sodium lights because LEDs are more efficient that standard bulbs and CFLs. Street lights don't use standard bulbs or CFLs but that is not going to stop them from saying stupid things. - tomato1324, on 12/22/2008, -0/+6they're working on it, and i mean, we (ny) already have one of the most efficient and useful subway systems in the world.
- theutopian, on 12/21/2008, -3/+8I can't bloody stand looking at LED lights.
Whenever I see the LED Christmas lights, they hurt my eyes, my decent eyes can never really focus on them and I just see little colored blurs. - drallo, on 12/22/2008, -0/+5Yeah man, you stick it to them. No one in the entire government had stopped to think about whether that department with the stupid name had a real purpose, or was just made up to funnel tax money to their rich CEO friends.
You've found the weak link in the chain of conspiracy, no one had ever thought to check how much money was being spent on this department, no one ever conceived that maybe it was costing taxpayers trillions of dollars!
The government needs to hire people to like...audit their expenditures, and craft some sort of "budget" so they can keep track of where they spend money, because its basically just magic right now, money goes in, but no one knows where it ends up except the jewlizards at the top of the chain. - keraneuology, on 12/22/2008, -0/+5As long as they keep the light going ~down~. The time to fight light pollution is NOW.
- pushforpeace, on 12/21/2008, -2/+7We need these in Chicago.
- Vazel, on 12/21/2008, -3/+8Oh that is so stupid. They almost always round when huge numbers are involved. 70 million people died in WW2 do you really think they mean that as an on the point even number.
- pjosemroy, on 12/21/2008, -1/+6Admin must strike a balance by attending to the immediate needs as well as providing room for latest techs. instead of going in for it in one shot, can do it in phases by devoting equal care in fixing other issues.
- cyclopssmiley, on 12/21/2008, -0/+5fix how?
- TheOtherOne135, on 12/21/2008, -1/+5"I want to stargaze from my balcony."
From NYC? Unlikely. Even if the streetlights weren't an issue, there's all the light from homes, offices, etc.
So what's more important, stargazing from your porch/balcony, or living in a city? - ricksite, on 12/22/2008, -1/+5@Vasel Do you really think asdfasfasfd was being serious?
- inactive, on 12/22/2008, -0/+4Or the giant mutant monster attacks every few months. That would be just great.
- djtomorama, on 12/21/2008, -2/+6That would look so sweet.
Now, about those subways... - jax1492, on 12/22/2008, -2/+5will this make the Yankees suck less?
- jagedlion, on 12/21/2008, -0/+3I belive LEDs last a little less than twice as long as the HPS lamps. They both suffer from degradation of brightness over time.
And other metal halide lamps can be as white as you want, amber is simply one of the best colors for people to see with at night. I know white seems better because its what you're used to, but amber on dark backgrounds is far better than white.
There are some places LED's can help, in this situation I just dont see it. Replacea a bulb with one that costs, what 10 times as much, has like half the efficiency, and whose production is worse for the environment and is more energy intensive, all to get a lifespan improvement of 40%? - hendrixlives64, on 12/22/2008, -0/+3aside from all the talk about durability, light pollution, etc.
they look decidedly more futuristic
that makes me happy :) - Vonauda, on 12/21/2008, -1/+4White light may look better to the human eye, but it is easier to see items under yellow light.
- migregorio, on 12/22/2008, -0/+3You can't stargaze from the Sun. It's a great view, but an unfortunate trade-off.
- HiddenLYNX, on 12/22/2008, -1/+4Youre not supposed to actually look at stars in the city with the telescopes, youre supposed to spy on people with those things. Find that girl whos taking her clothes off, or spy on that couple whos having sex while youre not. Didnt ya know that?
- whuddafugger, on 12/22/2008, -2/+5that's nice. but what are they planning to do about the SMELL?
- scarz99, on 12/22/2008, -0/+3I thought they were already testing this?
- slapthemonkey, on 12/22/2008, -0/+3That will be great
- beauley, on 12/22/2008, -0/+3Near the end of the 19th century, Thomas Edison invented a new and revolutionary lighting source, requiring no burning of whale oils or gas which would also shed light on their needs with even greater intensity. Only a few could have envisioned the future global use of the incandescent light bulb. This new light source would eventually become the most widely used light source on earth.

LEDs, The Future Of Global Lighting - inactive, on 12/22/2008, -0/+3Yes, appreciating things is for liberals, aka unpatriotic terrorists.
Good point. -
