- radicaldementia, on 07/13/2009, -0/+44Well, a chemical's infra-red absorption effects really has no correlation to it's toxicity. After all, water is the most heavily concentrated greenhouse gas.
After a little quick research, SO2F2 is already in widespread use as a fumigant to control termites etc. It has similar properties to sulfur-hexaflouride (the "anti-helium" that makes your voice sound really deep) and appears to have no lasting toxic effects (obviously though you can't breath it without asphyxiation).
While the current emission volume of SO2F2 is minuscule compared to CO2, I agree that since it has been demonstrated to be a very powerful greenhouse gas, we should work to limit it's use as much as possible. However, when it comes to pesticides, there is no winner, every single one harms something unintended. - Jensaarai, on 07/14/2009, -5/+21Um, the more important point to me is someone decided it was a good idea to sterilize soil.
After billions of years of coevolution between plants, insects, and micro organisms, Dow Chemical comes along and decides the best way to handle this delicate balance of different organisms is to wipe out everything.
Are you sure you want to eat food that comes from chemically sterilized soil? - hoobied, on 07/14/2009, -0/+11I digg you for the sheer awesomeness and not-judgmental tone of your comment. The internet thanks you.
- ghatid, on 07/14/2009, -1/+11CO2 is a naturally occurring gas that is everywhere. Why do we compare a pesticide to CO2 in terms of potency? That's like comparing poisonousness (is this a word? Digg seems to think so) in terms of water. Watch out! The poison of that snake is 10000x the poisonousness of water!
Also, why are they only using the amount of "global warming" a car produces as the amount it emits CO2? There are a lot of other gases/waste products that are much worse for us than CO2.
Even if this pesticide is really bad for us (which it seems like it is...) I hate articles written like this. They're written by idiots for idiots. - fragMasterFlash, on 07/14/2009, -1/+10Why not test it in some far away barren wasteland, like Detroit?
- radicaldementia, on 07/14/2009, -2/+11http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_dioxide_poison ...
Anything is highly toxic if the concentration is high enough, even oxygen. - biofriendlyblog, on 07/13/2009, -10/+17If the global warming effects are thousands of times stronger than carbon dioxide, what kinds of effects will it have on the people eating those fruits/vegetables? I definitely don't want this on my "fresh" produce.
- ketchup176, on 07/14/2009, -0/+6I think the title is confusing people. "4780 Times More Potent Than CO2" does not mean that it is more toxic than CO2. It is refering to its potency as a greenhouse gas.
- newsmonster, on 07/22/2009, -0/+5Why are we messing with things that don't need to be messed with? The human race has got this far without having to sterilize soil and wipe out everything. They must have better things to do with their time and technology?
- potatonet, on 07/14/2009, -1/+6I agree with ^^^
- pinchduck, on 07/14/2009, -0/+4Because any of the residents who survive it would be that much harder to kill.
- pinchduck, on 07/14/2009, -0/+4I think the word you're looking for is "toxicity".
- suntzusputnik, on 07/14/2009, -1/+5and half as potent as when i pass gas
- inactive, on 07/14/2009, -1/+5Stupid!
If it can kill soils it can kill you. Only a fool would think this is a good idea. - ketchup176, on 07/14/2009, -0/+4Judging from some of the comments, the title is confusing some people. "4780 Times More Potent Than CO2" is refering to the pesticides potency as a greenhouse gas, not how toxic it is. Despite that, I still wouldn't want to inhale any.
- JustinNoland, on 07/14/2009, -1/+4Treas? Seriously?
- inactive, on 07/14/2009, -1/+4Ahhh progress....
- Wittyfish, on 07/14/2009, -1/+4Although I enjoyed the use of your metaphor and thought it humorous, I disagree with your premise and must content that the greenhouse movement is not that "***** stupid".
- dacrazydude, on 07/14/2009, -2/+4I think you're misinformed. CO2 is not CFC. CFC are the main factor in ozone depletion. The ozone layer has been steadily improving since we banned CFCs.
Your definition of a toxic or a pollutant is crap as well. It's like medicine. A compound could be both a poison or a medicinal drug. It just depends on the dosage. Most problems with CO2 isn't it's lethality in any case. It's the effect it has as a greenhouse gas. The ocean acts as a buffer but it's only absorbs a percentage of the CO2 released. It's still steadily increasing in our atmosphere. - inactive, on 07/14/2009, -2/+4With taxes it's the most expensive substance in the world.
- keviniskool, on 07/14/2009, -0/+2It will make you sound like Barry White. Except you won't impregnate women with the sound of your voice.
- Zolkalter, on 07/14/2009, -1/+3Well we better hurry and get crap and trade passed! Only that can save us now! /sarcasm
- bicycleman, on 07/14/2009, -4/+5I wish Americans would use their guns for a purpose like this one. Just send a squad of 30-40 people armed to the teeth to DOW HQ and problem solved.
- acdcfanbill, on 07/14/2009, -1/+2according to Wikipedia, the density of sulfuryl fluoride is 1.623 g/cm³ at 0 °C whereas air is 1.293 g/cm³ at 0 °C. I don't see any data for SO2F2's density at higher temps but I doubt it gets near air's 1.1 g/cm³ at 30 °C. I also doubt it's ability to act as a greenhouse gas being that much heavier, however further study is never unwarranted.
Not to mention a study on it concludes it's an "insignificant source of sulfur to the atmosphere" despite it's minor ppt rise in the the atmosphere last few years

I say introduce it and keep watch, if it does become significant in the upper atmonsphere and will contributes to climate change, then pull it. I don't see tenths of a part per trillion change in more than 10 years that dramatic. - tacomawhite, on 07/14/2009, -3/+4this is unbelievable that something like this could possibly be used and permitted by our gov. everyone reading this should call their elected officials and demand that they have the epa block this chemical. I'm going to.
- Scottamus, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1The same reason pressures are measured in mmHg.
- inactive, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1Spam. Buried and reported.
- goodinohio, on 07/14/2009, -2/+3The concentration of ***** stupid in the green movement is the most toxic thing the earth has even known.
- Wittyfish, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1At least our house will be green!
- rmxz, on 07/14/2009, -3/+4And people wonder why cancer rates are high and the bees are all dying off...
- askantik, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1You think "tree huggers" are weird? You don't even understand the science behind climate change, so please don't tell other people they are stupid or weird.
- ghatid, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1Hey if Digg says it's a word, it's a word.
- inactive, on 07/14/2009, -1/+2 Will plants ever grow in sterilized soil?
I really think this is a bad,bad idea..It has"Accident waiting to happen" written all over it. - MWeather, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Integrated_pest_manag ...
- cr0c0dile76, on 07/14/2009, -2/+3One of the reasons I eat organic is because all grains and nuts and dried fruit are fumigated with sulfuryl fluoride in the United States, except organic ones. Every pesticide that has ever been used has turned out to be toxic to humans and eventually banned. Just think about that before you say that there is no evidence that this is toxic to humans. Pesticides are toxic to everything.
- inactive, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1 But they want more money..They must have more money!
- ZenMojo, on 07/14/2009, -2/+3Step 1: Buy seed.
Step 2: Breed seed.
Step 3: Inbreed seed.
Step 4: Patent seed.
Step 5: Document inbred diseases.
Step 6: Track down stray seed.
Step 7: File lawsuit against those who save seed.
Step 8: Poison sick seed.
Step 9: Charge people not to poison seed.
Step 10: Profit. - inactive, on 07/14/2009, -1/+1 I like the way you think!
- Wittyfish, on 07/14/2009, -1/+1Fool! Nothing plays Crysis!
- MWeather, on 07/14/2009, -3/+3"However, when it comes to pesticides, there is no winner, every single one harms something unintended."
Which is why pesticides should be the last resort in your Integrated Pest Management system. Prevention, observation, and then intervention. The presence of pests alone is not a reason to use pesticides. - ericthesalmon, on 07/14/2009, -2/+2If it seems like everything is a greenhouse gas these days, that's because EVERYTHING IS A GREENHOUSE GAS. (Except pure elements.)
We will all be on fire shortly. - inactive, on 07/14/2009, -2/+2I'm glad to see another article posted about this. This substance is a HUGE global warming driver.
- patrickbwells, on 07/14/2009, -3/+2Put that in your pipe and smoke it!
- inactive, on 07/14/2009, -1/+0What the ***** is this? Some sort of hippie version of DopeWars?
- e2superman, on 07/14/2009, -2/+1Well I guess I just think tree huggers are weird and I take the opposite stance on principle. I think the ultimate solution is simply population control. Some people think that humans should just breed like rats. Frankly there are too many of us now and that is causing all the mess. You know who you are. /s
- e2superman, on 07/14/2009, -12/+11For the last time... CO2 is not Toxic or a Pollutant. We exhale it every time we breath. Plant life both on land and sea THRIVE when it increases which produces more treas and other life. This then results in more stable weather (see plenty of articles on how dry land causes crappy less stable weather) which helps us all.
Does CO2 hurt the o-zone... maybe, but just planting more seeds would offset this in most cases. Even without this 75% of the earth (water) would simply absorb CO2 (see articles on oceans acting as a CO2 buffer in equilibrium with temperature, CO2 concentrations, etc). - cyber2uall, on 07/14/2009, -2/+1I have to think Dow chemical is in bed with the coal people. "Look see? We can make and release things worse than coal. Coal is our friend." Why would you even try to sell something like that right now?
- RhymeThyme, on 07/14/2009, -4/+2and half a rodent like the friends of Lance Bass
