- ferrell, on 07/02/2008, -1/+25Hmmm...
200 Million obese Americans + Free yearly liposuction = ENERGY INDEPENDENCE!!! - CosmoKramer, on 07/01/2008, -1/+18Make it from human fat and I'll call it a solution.
- unknownpoltroon, on 07/03/2008, -1/+15How long till it degrades in the car?
- MrMetal, on 07/02/2008, -2/+16I hear that oil is udder bliss for an engine.
- alx1507, on 07/03/2008, -1/+14There is a lot at steak with this new technology.
- hapax, on 07/03/2008, -0/+10For superior performance, use synthetic cows.
- cathl, on 07/03/2008, -1/+10Cars already have horns.
- amishx64, on 07/03/2008, -1/+9The Hindus aren't going to be happy about this.
- kh99, on 07/03/2008, -0/+8Hmm...good question. You'd think they would have addressed that in the article...
- bincoder, on 07/02/2008, -0/+7No thanks.
I would prefer a synthetic that will not degrade for 20 years.
Changing the oil is one chore I don't like. - dvsbastard, on 07/03/2008, -1/+8Yeah, I find it really does beef things up...
- dougvfr750, on 07/02/2008, -1/+8I'll bet there are a few cows not happy about this
- dezertrat, on 07/03/2008, -0/+6Its not just that the oil degrades, it also gets contaminated, so you would still need to change it and the filter
- malex, on 07/03/2008, -0/+6Blood diamonds are kind of a big deal to people. Ask Google.
- drmobutu, on 07/03/2008, -1/+6Ethanol isn't bad enough?
This is an abomination...No Beef for Oil! - borez, on 07/02/2008, -2/+7And what are you gonna run cows on eh?
Seriously though, I love the advert at the bottom for: Conflict free diamonds, Eco-friendly gold... I mean come on. - edebolt, on 07/03/2008, -1/+5isn't most motor oil already being recycled now? If it degrades faster then its less suitable for recycling.
- SHUUTOBI, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3But their flatulence is warming up the earth!
- danomagnum, on 07/03/2008, -3/+6If it degrades, there is no reason to recycle it.
- spaceman84, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3No, because I'm sure they have no concept of what oil wear is and are more concerned about using eco-friendly products than the rather large investment they made in buying a car.
Product sucks? They don't care, so long as it's "green" and doesn't harm the environment. - itseffinkasey, on 07/03/2008, -1/+4Sounds good to me. Doing an oil change isn't the hard part, getting rid of the ***** oil is.
OH but but but darn it... WHAT ABOUT THE ANIMALS?
/sarcasm - kref1, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3So do I need to change my oil every 9 days or 90 miles.
I'm for saving the planet and all that jazz, but we gotta draw the line somewhere. - hapax, on 07/03/2008, -1/+4I tried to warn them but they just stared at me and kept on chewing cud.
- itseffinkasey, on 07/03/2008, -1/+4Honestly about three times a year.
- redneckblues, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2All aboard the meat wagon!
- ChileanGoD, on 07/03/2008, -2/+4It's the ciiiiiircle of liiiiife....
- ChileanGoD, on 07/03/2008, -1/+3So, how many cows per liter of Oil?
- apextek, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2just curious it biodegrades in days? what if it sits in a undriven car for an extended period?
- charlietuna, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2Tyler Durden would love this.
- SilverBlade2k, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2This is near perfect...We eat cows anyways...so now we can use more of the body that would be otherwise wasted...
Now only if we could use human fat...it'll be the solution to obesity AND oil. - inactive, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2no shortage of that...liposuction will become patriotic...
- KLowD9x, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2I'm sure my bearings would LOVE the shear strength of cow fat.
I will stick to my polyalphaolefin oils. - inactive, on 07/03/2008, -1/+2corn+cows= oil....BRILLIANT!...//s
- Chupinator, on 07/03/2008, -1/+2The solution is butt plugs for all cows. Or shove a tree up there.
- Ne007, on 07/03/2008, -1/+2Soon fat people will be turning up missing.
They will be issuing heifer alerts. - spaceman84, on 07/03/2008, -1/+2Yes, an excellent choice.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_solution - charlietuna, on 07/03/2008, -2/+3Thus you would need to kill more cows (or drill for more oil). Recycling is not just about reducing waste, it's about reducing consumption and overall cost. Next time think a bit more before you correct someone.
- tnoy, on 07/03/2008, -1/+2I change my oil every 4000 miles.
- atact88, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1As the article says, you'd mix the oil with another mysterious set of chemicals of unknown composition (undeniably good for the environment, of course) and that supposedly breaks the oil down into smaller molecules which act as "food" for bacteria in the ground or something. Yeah. ***** recycling our oil. Let's just make ***** we can dump in the ground! We're not lazy enough.
- gkiltz, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1If it does, in fact biodegrade in days, what do you think it's going to do inside an engine!
It will last about an hour! - tnoy, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Just use the fat from the cow I had for lunch today.
- lineweight, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Aren't our huge factories full of cows part of the global warming problem? I mean, it's good to be efficient, but this isn't exactly a solution.
- JLecker, on 07/03/2008, -1/+2I believe it only degrades when you mix it with G-DISPOSOIL, which wouldn't happen in your car. That's what I got from the article, anyways.
- BOFH2, on 07/03/2008, -2/+2yeah collecting the oil in one of those handy oil collectors and walking into the local parts store every once and a while is too tough. Do what my dad did in the 30s pour the oil on the dirt road to keep the dust down.
http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductDetail.aspx?Mfr ... - bjornski, on 07/03/2008, -1/+1If they want to put that fat in the cars instead of in foods, I'm for it.
The American food supply getting healthier in order to help power our cars?
Interesting connection, but hey, if it works, let's go for it. - thomsonr, on 07/03/2008, -2/+2How often do you change it? Once a year here.
- l800LEMMINGS, on 07/03/2008, -2/+2i support this if this if they don't try to mass produce cattle being that already has it's problems as it is. And that it doesn't try to replace electric powered vehicles and temporarily replaces gas until electric can mainstream.
- Neorio, on 07/03/2008, -3/+2Forget about cows, how about using human fat to power cars?
That would sounds like the plot of a dystopian future science fiction story (or science fact in this case) - similar to "soylent green" - WHauser, on 07/03/2008, -1/+0They do clearly state that the oil will not biodegrade while in the engine - it must be mixed with some sort of enzyme to break it down. You would do well to read the article closely before making such critical comments.
However, they don't provide any scientific data in the article that suggests that the oil works as well as conventional or synthetic oils at lubricating your engine. The real issue is viscosity breakdown anyhow. There is no scientific data presented on either of these points and if you look closely you'll notice that the oil is off road only and there is no mention of API certification. Certification is probably cost prohibitive but not having it is certainly a red flag in my book.
Bottom line: we recycle oil anyhow, I'm really not sure what this is saving us. Maybe if it means that the lazy among us will not dump the stuff down the storm drain then that's a small victory for the environment. Cool concept nonetheless and it's good to see business working hard to come up with innovative green products.
edit: if you look at the website, they do offer a line of oils for automotive use. That line does meet the current API standards - looks to be acceptable stuff. Open mouth, insert foot. -
