- Rixta, on 08/22/2008, -0/+3There is always 2 sides to this argument, and being from South Africa (neighbor to Namibia) and a long time visitor to game reserves there (for viewing purposes only) I come out on the side of the government on this one. No-one likes or wants to see these wonderful animals needlessly killed, but generally only the older elephants are targets and the majority of the money goes directly back to the game reserve and conservation efforts and to better the lives of the local people living in the area who are absolutely reliant on the tourism industry.
The author of the article has some good points however about the bull elephants keeping the younger ones in check so it would be interesting to follow this story. There is also not enough background information and it certainly seems to be a one-sided article which is disappointing from the Telegraph as it usually has better quality than this.
Also bear in mind that countries like South Africa have an over-population of elephants who do an incredible amount of damage to the environment (have you seen what a herd of elephants can do to an area in a short space of time?) so this is not a clear cut issue.
