- mwolfzorn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20"Today, New York City has 5.2 million trees" [Article]
Reading is fun.
@jemulov I think it will at least do a much better job of replacing any current deforestation because the tree budget will increase by $37.5 million. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17I hope this does happen... and not just in NYC, but everywhere else possible as well.
- PATSCRU, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17anybody that hasn't experienced a NYC summer needs to go so you can feel what it feels like to be inside of a welldigger's sweaty asscrack while he's standing in the oven....it's like 100 degrees and so humid you can chew the air, and the temperature and humidity bring out all the sewage odors of the hundreds years old urban center until you want to die.....I'm going to fly over there and start planting trees myself.
- JCSaint, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16I work on the Jersey side of the river and on a hot day, you can see the haze over the city. It's pretty obvious that more trees will help with shade, sucking up CO2, etc. I just hope 1 million is enough to make a difference. A big urban area like NYC already has so much concrete, asphalt, etc.
Also, remember NYC isn't just Manhattan. It's Brooklyn, Staten Island, the Bronx and Queens also so there's plenty of room to plant 1 million trees. - wario, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Denver's Mayor John Hickenlooper pledged this a year ago and has been put in to effect.
- behn1220, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I really hope they do more than just plan the trees by 2017 and actually PLANT them...
- Whaines, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Anyone can plan 1 million trees...
- JCSaint, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9So money grows on trees now?
- Jemulov, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14Not to be cynical, but how many trees are going to be cut down in New York between now and 2017? Don't get me wrong, I think it's great that they are doing this, I'm just curious on how much deforestation that displaces.
- phlux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I travel to singapore for work often. Many people ask me if I like the city, and when I say ye, its one of my favorites they ask why.
The reason is that Singapore has so much greenery and so many trees that no matter where you drive you feel like youre practically driving through a manicured park.
They often have very large setbacks between buildings and the streets and leave a lot of room for plants and trees.
The build down as well as up - and excavate large malls under most large newer buildings with tunnels connecting places.
THey have a very high tax on getting a car and a license to own a car - a friend has a regular toyota camry, it costs him 2K USD per month to have that car.
They are planning to grow to 6M ppl and are building massive subterranian infrastructure to support that goal.
THey are, IMO, the best managed city. - Livewire, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Two birds with one stone! Three if you count all the extra shade you'll have!
- leobaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm with haystring on this. New York is freaking hot in the summer - sweltering hot, smelly hot. But New Orleans / South Louisiana is not hot, it's painful, it hurts to be in the sun. Walking out of your door at midnight, it's like getting sprayed with crisco.
- ooMissioNoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@jackhole
sometimes we actually read the article before we try and make witty comments - LonesomeFighter, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6raking all those leaves up in the fall is gonna suck. well i'm sure they could get a lot of 'troubled youth' to take care of that.
- StandardsDT, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@hdtvdust
Not all of New Jersey is bad. In fact majority of the state in fact is very beautiful. The only bad trashy parts of Jersey is in fact near Newark where all of the trash goes. People need to stop assuming that New Jersey is nothing but filled with garbage when in fact that is not the case. - doczein, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Does it really take that long to plan?
- redwoodtree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Allergy sufferers can only hope (and possibly write city hall) that they plant a mix of female and male trees (or hopefully more female trees than male).
For many years cities have planted male trees because they drop less visible "stuff" in the streets, but it's also led to outrageous pollen counts in urban areas. This actually makes allergies much worse in urban areas than in suburban or rural areas.
This mix of male/female is out-of-whack in cities! We have arborists without allergies to thank I guess.
Hmmph, I guess it's appropriate that I should be commenting on a thread about trees. ... Anyway, if anyone reads this, and lives in New York, write them. - bbhh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Not to be cynical, but how many trees are going to die when peter petrelli explodes?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yeah, I am sure the people that came up with this plan didn't RESEARCH it. You are smarter than them because you read a Scientific American journal, and think that they didn't.
(And if you really don't see how this study does not apply to a CITY, since it was tlaking about huge forests, you really are dumb.) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i'm not much a hippie, but this is a good idea. they should consider this in los angeles as well.
- forcedfx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5God no. It's bad enough that NYC's trash washes up on our beaches.
- forcedfx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I wouldn't expect 1 million trees to make much of an impact. It takes about 1.5 acres of trees to offset the CO2 produced by the average size family home in a year.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2wow...forced is actually cliaming that NJ is better than NY City?
NY City's trash (and the view of NY City) are the only good parts of NJ, other than GReat Advetnure and Action PArk, if that still exists. - JCSaint, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3They should consider this everywhere. Nothing is wrong with a nice tree lined street.
- Omega697, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3What the hell is with all the hate dude? I didn't say anything about whether or not they researched it or whether it was a win, just that the issue isn't as cut and dry as we might have imagined it. I was surprised by this fact when I read about it and thought others might benefit. I mean, trees are also pretty and improve overall air quality.
Besides, we invaded Iraq, and from what we can tell, we didn't really RESEARCH that. - laserdog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That article is about deforestation, (e.g. replacing tree cover with natural open ground), which is trees being replaced by opportunistic (or human planted) vegetation.
I'd argue that cement and asphalt have heat absorption properties different enough from naturally occuring ground cover/crops to make the results of that study not applicable to this. - cyotha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They are.
http://www.milliontreesla.org/mtadvgroup.htm - desistere, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1=) Count on diggers being too slow to get the joke...
Title: "NYC Pledges to plan 1 Million New Trees by 2017"
They have already planned them..
The mistake comes from the word "plan" which is supposed to be "plant" - forcedfx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@rehdrick
That doesn't take into account their total environmental impact, of natural gas/oil/propane usage or electricity. Your link is just specifying the amount of oxygen they create. The oxygen you use when breathing is minuscule. You need approximately 1.5 acres without including their driving habits. Obviously this varies based on the size, age, and location of the home along with how energy conscious the owner's are. - lubczyk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Not to be cynical but how many trees of those 1 million will not die before reaching maturity or be cut down in the future?
- biff198, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I'm planning several million trees right now...
-God - HayString, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4"anybody that hasn't experienced a NYC summer needs to go so you can feel what it feels like to be inside of a welldigger's sweaty asscrack while he's standing in the oven....it's like 100 degrees and so humid you can chew the air,..."
No, anyone who _has_ experienced a NYC summer needs to /themself.
Anyone who hasn't experienced a south Louisiana(in the swamps) summer needs to so they can feel what _real_ humidity is & feel what it's like to almost be carried off by mosquitos. - elk1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2how bureaucratic, they pledge to plan something
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3What effect will the increased transpiration from an extra million trees have on the local climate? More rain? That would at least cut down on airborne pollution... and maybe cool off summer days a bit, too.
- rhedrick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22 Mature trees produces enough oxygen for a family of 4, not 1.5 acres.
http://www.ec.gc.ca/envirozine/english/issues/58/any_questions_e.cfm - cipherscribe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Aw, that's nice. It'll give all the homeless people shade so they won't bake in the smog and heat that ravages our planet while our nation's wealth is being spent on conquering the rest of the world. More trees, that's it. But what will happen when we need all that wood to make paper for more Acts and Laws that strip us of more and more of our human rights?
Planting trees isn't the answer. The answer lies in a restructuring of our priorities, not only as a nation, but as an entire race of people. - Daedalus17, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1According to the climate models used by the IPCC planting more trees will actually cause the earth to WARM not COOL. I personally think more trees are a good thing anyway, but I wouldn't count on it to counter global warming.
- lensman00, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Great initiative. It looks like NYC has some catching up to do per this chart of canopy cover in 'selected cities':
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/object/article?f=/c/a/2006/11/19/BAGFSMG1B41.DTL&o=2 - brokencode, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This is typical political propaganda to pacify the environmentalists. There still major development going on in the city and there's hardly tree planting going with it where I live. They just pave cement over the sidewalk so no trees can grow.
- JCSaint, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4forced,
How many trees fit on 1.5 acres? And how much pollution in the air will that help clean up?
I'm not trying to be an ass but I don't have statistics and it sounds like you do. Man, this sounds like I'm trying to be an ass. - Omega697, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Just watch out, some ***** will bite your head off for saying so in here. I'm a full-on global-warming believing, Al Gore-loving hippie, but I mention that planting trees isn't necessarily the answer, and get dugg down. Go figure.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I once read the average life of a tree in NYC is about seven years
about the only thing that grows well there are those ugly-ass stanky-as-hell gingko trees
this is a nice gesture on paper, but it will be of zero consequence
oh btw, did you know that, thanks to that COMPLETE piece of ***** Ghouliani and that money-grubbing party queen (come on, does anybody REALLY think he's straight) Bloomberg, it is still illegal to dance in almost every single venue in NYC? go ahead, plant a tree, you already killed the city.... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow..I can't believe that you could POSSIBLY think that anyone reading your comment will think badly about Guiliani or Bloomberg and not you.
YOU look like a fool to anyone reading your post. the mayor and former mayor look fine.
And I think you have been wathcing Footloose one too many times. Dancing is perfectly legal in NY City. - carbanm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1New York should plan on teaching kids to spell, D-bag.
- geoduck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Los Angeles would be better suited to get rid of all the grass they try and plant and adopt more desert landscapes. Getting rid of all those lawn mowers would measurably increase air quality.
- wesleyr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0In other news...
http://www.curbed.com/archives/2007/04/20/ways_to_celebrate_spring_cut_down_fifth_ave_cherry_trees.php - Omega697, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Planting trees above a certain latitude actually increases global warming as more light energy is absorbed by the trees rather than reflected back into space. This completely dwarfs the effect of removing greenhouse gases.

In other words, I can be lazy on Earth day and not feel guilty about it. In fact, I might just start tearing up people's gardens vigilante style. :)
- takagari, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0As of July 1, 2005, the population of the City of New York was 8,213,839, an increase of more than 205,561 persons or 2.6 percent since April 2000. Staten Island continues to outpace the four other boroughs of the city, with a growth rate of 7.1 percent, placing it among the fastest growing counties in New York State. Manhattan increased by 4.5 percent, the Bronx by 2.4 percent, Brooklyn by 1.9 percent and Queens had an estimated increase of 1.2 percent.
soooo it will take u 10 years to plant 1 tree for ever 8.2 people and a single fully grown tree can barely keep up with the crap we breathe out for four people. plus Ya know, our cars, and other gadgets.
how about... you.. TRY HARDER! -
