- wolfing, on 05/19/2009, -0/+14you know, a 'then and now' story is much more effective when you can see the 'then' and the 'now' in the same page
- ripple01, on 05/19/2009, -0/+11Last summer, my fiancee, my daughter, and I all took a trip out to the Pacific Northwest. One of the things we had on the agenda was going to Mt. St. Helens. I was sort of on the fence about it, not really interested, but we went anyway. How wrong I was... it was AWESOME! The drive out there, about 1 - 1/2 hours off the main highway, is absolutely breathtaking, the evergreens all start to melt together and it looks like you are seeing an impressionist painting in real life. It was unbelievably beautiful. The visitors center at the top of the mount was also well done and we throuoghly enjoyed the visit. Just thought I would post this in case anyone was thinking about going out there.
- inactive, on 05/19/2009, -0/+10Here's a great time-lapse video of the lava-dome being built up from 2004-2008: http://www.vimeo.com/1054666?pg=embed&sec=1054 ...
I <3 the Pacific NW! - swordedge, on 05/19/2009, -0/+6Here's to Harry Truman, who refused to leave his home. He died with the explosion.

- zantos420, on 05/19/2009, -0/+6Dear wired.com,
Since your developers obviously lack the ability to understand/implement JavaScript to load images dynamically without a page post back, you may contact me and I will give you the code for free. - cejones, on 05/19/2009, -0/+5They should have a photo that was taken from the same position as the very first photo to show how St Helens height decreased...
- Nouman6, on 05/19/2009, -1/+6I would have much rather scrolled the page, or at least make the slideshow javascript so it doesn't reload the page :P
- BioniqueUltra, on 05/19/2009, -0/+4Look a those before/after pictures, from a unique point of view.
http://vulcan.wr.usgs.gov/Volcanoes/MSH/Images/bef ... - rhapsycats, on 05/19/2009, -0/+4I live about 2 hours south (Portland) and remember the day it erupted. I was in 7th grade. I wish I had been more aware about it. I do remember lots of ash dusting everything in Portland.
- mlvassallo, on 05/19/2009, -0/+4I used to live in Camas, WA on the top of Prune Hill and as a kid I remember having a beautiful view of the mountain from our second story back deck. One day before school I told my mom I saw smoke coming from the top of the mountain and when she looked she could see it too. It caused quite a scare until we saw on the news (no internet in those days) that there was a logging camp fire on the other side of the mountain causing the smoke.
Ah the wonders of living near an active volcano. - beesaretasty, on 05/19/2009, -0/+4When I think "Then and Now" I think the same picture side by side in two different times. A better title would be "A Bunch Of Pictures of Mount St Helens That I Thought Were Cool. And Some Boats!!!"
- pcghost, on 05/19/2009, -0/+3I was a little kid fishing with Dad on Clear Lake in Eastern Washington the day she blew. It is my earliest memory. The sky gradually went black/gray to the west and later that day Spokane was buried in ash. Cars and buses died all over the city from the fine grain ash. We had to wear masks for what seemed like weeks. You still can't throw a shovel here without hitting the gray line about a foot down.
As Ripple01 said above, don't miss it if you visit Washington. The Clearwater (old) and the Johnston Ridge observatories are not a bad drive from the highway and I promise you will never see anything like it anywhere else in our country. It is a stunning view looking down the mouth of the mountain from Johnston Ridge. See it in spring and you are sure to see the Elk herds moving around the monument, as well as fields of wildflowers. I try to see the mountain at least once a year, to photograph it from different perspectives. Occasionally I get great shots of the venting and smoking in the center on a clear day. It truly is a must see. - kelmaster1, on 05/19/2009, -1/+4Umm, are you really that retarded? I don't think that's an attempt at humor looking at your other posts...
Yes, the St. Helens eruptions didn't happen and millions of people were deceived... - j0hn, on 05/19/2009, -0/+2I live 40 miles from Mt St Helens.. Can see it from my house. My parents and grandparents have tons of pictures of the mountain from that day. Pretty incredible.
- kelmaster1, on 05/19/2009, -0/+2what is this, boston.com?
- wupike, on 05/19/2009, -0/+2Dugg because I was born on 5/18/1980... talk about an omen, lol.
- praha, on 05/20/2009, -0/+2Thanks. That was one of the coolest vids I've seen in a while.
Wife's a geologist - she'll enjoy seeing that. - GreenChaos, on 05/19/2009, -0/+2Here's the high def webcam the article links to of Mt. St. Helens: http://www.fs.fed.us/gpnf/volcanocams/msh/views/ja ...
- edwartica, on 05/19/2009, -0/+2One of my earliest memories is seeing St Helens blow her top. Imagine being five years old, hearing a giant boom, and seeing a huge mushroom cloud in the sky.
- BioniqueUltra, on 05/19/2009, -0/+2Look a those before/after pictures, from a unique point of view.
http://vulcan.wr.usgs.gov/Volcanoes/MSH/Images/bef ... - borez, on 05/19/2009, -2/+4Right that's it Wired, unless you can be arsed to implement a decent gallery or put content on one page then I can no longer be arsed to view your site. End of.
Buried. - audiblesilence, on 05/19/2009, -1/+2Why is it so hard for people to design a wepbage with a slideshow that doesnt redraw the full page every time?
- Bagos1, on 05/19/2009, -0/+1Kind of like seeing, or not seeing, the Dunkin' Doughnut shop closing.
Still doing normal things.
Like Kayaking.
Like normal. - inactive, on 05/21/2009, -0/+1Isn't that just amazing?! It's almost like "bam! instant mountain peaks." Pff, it still blows me away.
- toddc612, on 05/19/2009, -0/+1SORRY, THAT FILE WAS NOT FOUND
Doh. Talk about a crappy gallery navigation experience.. - edwartica, on 05/19/2009, -1/+2Yeah. I didn't look out my window and see it with my own eyes or anything. I didn't collect ash off the street. I didn't hear a huge boom.
- edwartica, on 05/19/2009, -0/+1Looks out the window to see the now. Wow!
- thegitaroo, on 05/20/2009, -0/+1Amazing pics. My grandpa was a logger working near St. Helens. If it hadn't erupted on a Sunday, he'd have been ash.
- drivingalone, on 05/19/2009, -2/+2Exploding death mountains make someone love their territory? To each his own.
- missinglink, on 05/19/2009, -14/+6If this happened today, Al Gore would go ***** and Obama would levy quite a fine for all the CO2 emissions.
