- SheilaNoya, on 05/24/2008, -0/+1Someone needs to invent an economical and attractive way to harness the wind power from our homes. I live in the hills overlooking Los Angeles and I have a clear view all the way to the beach with nothing blocking the onshore winds. I would love to be able to capture the power of these winds, but I'm not about to install an ugly, noisy wind turbine.
Surely, with all of the creative minds out there, someone should be able to develop some kind of rooftop turbine or something similar to a squirrel cage fan that is more horizontal than vertical, so it doesn't stick up and obstruct views or look unsightly.
As a kid, I used to play with rotor kites at the beach. They were small horizontal cylinders (1' x 2') that spun in the wind at tremendous speeds and automatically positioned themselves to capture the most amount of wind. It seems like this same sort of device could be converted to generate power without taking up such a large amount of space.
You engineers and students out there get busy!
