- natecoolidge, on 08/28/2008, -6/+205It's August, I'm paying $0 Per Day for my heating costs. Why spend lots of money heating your house when nature can do it for you?
- Speaking, on 08/29/2008, -13/+96The guy has his own land, his own home, it looks like he is in the middle of nowhere (so he isn't displacing others), it's an investment (and an inspiring one at that). It's ok to do something because you WANT to do it (it doesn't hurt if it showcases amazing innovation).
It's much better than indulging in non-investment "wants". Ever eat fast food? You didn't need to. You could have bought some rice and beans and had a cheaper, healthier, more filling meal but you got the burger instead.
Ever watch a movie? You could have played tag in a park with friends (after walking to the park).
Ever purchased a car for more than 1000? You can save a lot of money buying super cheap cars (believe me, I have done it).
Ever bought 2 ply toilet paper? People all over the world don't even have any, you probably don't "need" 2 ply.
Did you get the basic, free cellphone (with service plan) or did you buy one that had the features you wanted?
How far down the rabbit hole do you want to go? Feel free to down vote me if you only ever do what you NEED to do!
I personally live in a small apartment within walking distance from where I work (I got rid of my car), I do eat beans and rice for lunch everyday, and I live far below my means, I also give a lot to an orphanage that an Aunt runs in a third world country, and I personally hate excess, but your "why the hell" attitude pisses me off. Most people do what they "want" to the extent that they are capable, so don't be a pretentious prick. This guy took the risk to build a proof of concept type house, when have you put yourself and your money on the line to push tech that "may" benefit everyone? - kaosethema, on 08/29/2008, -2/+76i can show you how to air-condition your northern home in mid-january
- scotq, on 08/28/2008, -18/+73Why in the hell does anyone need a 4000 sq. ft house to begin with?
- CardinalFang, on 08/28/2008, -2/+51I don't know about this. Sure, the monthly heating bill is dirt cheap, but after reading the article, the initial cost seems pretty expensive.

- BOFH2, on 08/29/2008, -0/+30"I'm an athletic coach, so i've seen my fair share of eco-disasters when it comes to poor heating!"
How does being an athletic coach and eco-disasters go together? - guymandood, on 08/29/2008, -1/+30Sadly though, his 4000 sq ft. house was a gift from Paul McCartney, who had it flown in from Japan for a cost of $30,000,000
- borez, on 08/29/2008, -1/+30I'd like a spreadsheet of initial investment vs future savings vs long term payback for this project before I digg please.
- inactive, on 08/29/2008, -3/+29You sir, just owned. Well said.
- inactive, on 08/28/2008, -3/+24gotta have somewhere to put the dead servants bodies.
- socalftw, on 08/28/2008, -15/+32Ask John McCain. He's got 17. Actually don't ask him, cuz he wouldn't remember.
- karlw, on 08/28/2008, -6/+22His name is Robert Paulson.
- Checkerd, on 08/29/2008, -2/+18His name is Robert Paulson.
- plastix, on 08/29/2008, -0/+16What do you pay for air conditioning in the summer when the sun turns the ultimately insulated house into a stone oven?
- philliesphan026, on 08/28/2008, -6/+22His name is Robert Paulson.
- spaceshipsix, on 08/29/2008, -1/+17And he only pays $10 a year on water too!
(after installing a $50,000 groundwater well and pump system)
Cool but worthless..kind of like that Earthrace boat. - Shadic, on 08/29/2008, -1/+17You do NOT talk about Fight Club.
- windandstorm, on 08/29/2008, -0/+13I live in Canada, is that a problem or will these energy savings keep me warm?
In winter (FYI) it's very cold. - wrzhydr, on 08/29/2008, -4/+17His name is Bitch-*****.
- linagee, on 08/29/2008, -2/+14It's not about cost. When you have a 4,000 sqft house just because you can, money is no object and it's all about eco-penis size.
- robbiedo, on 08/29/2008, -1/+13those can be burned after proper aging.
- ThatGeek, on 08/29/2008, -1/+13Houses should be lived in for more than a decade. Plus that means a much higher resale value when you do finally decide to sell
- inactive, on 08/29/2008, -0/+11How much did the solar panels cost?
- inactive, on 08/29/2008, -1/+12Last winter (in northern Ohio) it cost us about $1500 to heat our 1400sqft home, and our thermostat never reached higher than 62 degrees F.... Natural Gas sucks.
- Jeepy, on 08/29/2008, -0/+11Wood! The new wonder fuel that will power the future.
- inactive, on 08/29/2008, -0/+11I work from home, my wife works from home, and I have kids. My home is in the 4000 sqft range and it seems small to me because every sqft is used.
- mardraum, on 08/29/2008, -0/+11or you could buy sweaters and blankets.
diggers would look adorable in sweaters. - stutimandal, on 08/28/2008, -3/+13Or become like me and enjoy the cold winds in winter without a heater.
(PS: I live in California). - stereoa, on 08/29/2008, -5/+15In Soviet Russia, Robert Paulson is his name.
- dagnome1984, on 08/29/2008, -1/+10Dugg for beans and rice. Not only is it cheap, but damn tasty too.
- d03boy, on 08/29/2008, -2/+11I get... in life, you have no name. But in death, you do.
- addakorn, on 08/29/2008, -0/+9I am mostly certain he means that he uses scrap from local logging operations.
Do you counter act every negative thing you do to the environment, or are you just a hypocritical nature-sucking-whore? - fprintf, on 08/29/2008, -2/+11This is upstate NY. For those of you not familiar with this area, it is quite cold in the winter time. There have been times when the temperature rarely gets above 0 deg F for 30 days in January and February. The temperature difference between upstate and NY City, only a 150 miles away, is quite dramatic. So for this guy to heat a house that large for 1,000 a year is quite impressive. This year I will heat my 2,500 sq. foot house in much warmer Connecticut for $3,000. That is double what I paid last year, so it hurts.
On the other hand, also note this guy is using wood to heat the house. In Upstate, wood is very abundant and remarkably cheap, compared with oil, electricity and gas. It would not surprise me if this house would cost double that if heated by either of those three methods. - GiJoeBob, on 08/29/2008, -0/+8Nun ya bidness
- GregIsLegend, on 08/29/2008, -4/+12His Name Is Robert Paulson.
- blackinthmiddle, on 08/29/2008, -0/+8Having a 4,000 sq ft house doesn't mean you're Donald Trump. In the North East and California, you'd have a hard time finding 4,000 sq ft anywhere for less than $750,000 (even in this depressed market). However, in most other parts of the country (e.g. most parts of Texas) 4K sq ft can be had for less than $400K.
So the whole line of thinking that you have where if a person has a 4,000 sq ft house, they must be rolling in the dough and money is no object is silly. - coolcash2005, on 08/29/2008, -0/+8I wrote a paper in Environmental science once on passive solar energy. It takes at least a decade of using a house like that for you to begin profiting from the low heating costs. I'm not saying its not worth it, its just that it isn't the greatest thing ever.
- sg7791, on 08/29/2008, -1/+9You're right, we need a long term solution...
I say we take down the sun. - RSS14, on 08/29/2008, -0/+7Capitalism; if you can afford it, you can get it.
- ImOscar, on 08/29/2008, -1/+8I heat my poorly insulated 1500 sq. ft. house for less than $915/year, in Minnesota. And I haven't turned on my AC all summer. BFD. Hell, I could heat it for free, but I decide to splurge and not sleep in a winter coat.
EDIT- I'd like to add, yes I think this is cool, but it's not the kind of living green that is going to change the world. I think it's fantastic that someone with these kind of resources is doing something to minimize his footprint. I'd love to see what Mr. Gore's heating bill is. - bwdd, on 08/29/2008, -1/+8Hey look, a reply button!
- inactive, on 08/29/2008, -0/+7Where the hell in upstate NY are you talking about? It very rarely hits 0 degrees Fahrenheit for brief periods of time on the rare days it actually does get that cold. Sure, there are cold snaps once in a while where the night time temp will hit -10, but those last maybe 4 or 5 days, then it's back to 15 degree pre-dawn temps.
- RAEP, on 08/29/2008, -1/+8You have only been here for a day and I already love you. You are the best troll digg has ever seen.
- GregIsLegend, on 08/29/2008, -2/+8His Name is Robert Paulson
- ericthegreat, on 08/29/2008, -0/+6Where's the real meat? How much additional did this cost? What are the downsides if any? Come on bloggers, quit just glazing over a topic to be the first ones on there. Right back at you diggers, when there is no substance then bury it.
- antonio97b, on 08/29/2008, -0/+6Turtleneck sweaters.
- reddikilowatt, on 08/29/2008, -0/+6That's true of many of these "green" projects. Many of them have a much higher capitol cost. If you are betting that the cost of energy will rise faster than the added mortgage costs, you might come out ahead.
- thegrantman, on 08/29/2008, -1/+7Not if it's "gasp" a 100 degrees outside. The woodstove can't be used for cooling "gasp".
