Damn this climate increase. - bluto36, on 10/30/2008, -2/+20Damn it MIT who do you think you are? Al Gore has already figured out everything we need to know about global warming. he even said there is no longer any discussion about it. why are you discussing it? you better stop... unless you want ManBearPig to pay you a visit.
- fulibs, on 10/30/2008, -3/+20FTA - "natural cycle in mother nature - and not the direct result of man's contributions"
Who would have thought... a natural cycle. - ThinkOutTheBox, on 10/30/2008, -3/+16They don't have enough data to tell if global warming is man made, imagine that.
I figure the cult of gore will be along and post a bunch of links showing conflicting data and resort to calling the MIT scientist "deniers" and not qualified to have an opinion or the science is to complicated for them to understand. - PuterPrsn, on 10/31/2008, -2/+15I guess Gore can add MIT scientists to his list of "deniers"
- thedinomeister, on 10/31/2008, -1/+9I think this is healthy for science. Good job MIT.
- maxtangent, on 10/31/2008, -2/+9Cue the "Bought out by Big Oil" claims.
- inactive, on 10/31/2008, -0/+4I doubt you can point to anyone who *wants* to harm the planet, and damn few who are indifferent. The difference between the rational faction ("deniers") and the little gorebots is the time line and techniques. The AGW crowd would have us throttle the Western (not in India, the PRC and the Third World, just the nasty Western one) economy while investing untold sums in technologies which are but a wet dream loony al's pocket. The average family shivers in the dark and bicycles to work while the goreacle stretches out in his mansion, travels in convoys of SUVs or his private jet while consuming 20+ times more electricity than the average American family.
By all means, let's clean things up. In a planned, measured way in which market forces bring new, clean technologies to the fore because they work, not because it gives the leftist loons a thrill. For national security reasons alone, we should produce all of our energy domestically. - greenfyre, on 11/02/2008, -0/+1If it Denies climate change you pretty much know what you're dealing with Climate Change Denial: Nothing but Lies and Frauds http://greenfyre.wordpress.com/2008/10/06/climate- ...
Notice how they dugg you down for reporting truthfully and accurately what the real story was? That's the true colours of these self-styled truth seekers. - inactive, on 10/31/2008, -4/+3See I'm all for news getting out through blogs, but perhaps they should be rated for accountability.
- inactive, on 10/31/2008, -4/+2Interesting. Source article containing actual MIT statement follows:
Amongst other media sources, tech site TG Daily headlines a story a few days before the election:
"MIT scientists baffled by global warming theory, contradicts scientific data"
And concludes the story as follows:
"One thing does seem very clear, however; science is only beginning to get a handle on the big picture of global warming. Findings like these tell us it's too early to know for sure if man's impact is affecting things at the political cry of "alarming rates." We may simply be going through another natural cycle of warmer and colder times..."
The problem is, the MIT study in question in no way supports that 'clear' idea of TG Daily's 'natural cycles theory' in any way. To the contrary, the study authors introduce their findings with language that explicitly links man to global warming. The MIT statement as follows:
* BOknows's diary :: ::
*
MIT statement
"Methane levels in the atmosphere have more than tripled since pre-industrial times, accounting for around one-fifth of the human contribution to greenhouse gas-driven global warming. Until recently, the leveling off of methane levels had suggested that the rate of its emission from the Earth's surface was approximately balanced by the rate of its destruction in the atmosphere."
Note the term: "human contribution to greenhouse gas-driven global warming".
Whatever some people might want to believe, this latest study hardly punches holes in the global warming theory. In fact, it validates certain portions such as the feedback loop in a very serious manner.
I don't like the idea of crop loss, habitable land loss, or disease spread - but I'm not trying to wish it away either by cherrypicking data to create illogical conclusions. This study does nothing to suggest that man-made global warming is not a serious threat. In fact, it is just as easy to conclude that we have underestimated global warming.
It is poor logic on TG Daily's part, and even more irresponsible journalism to malign this study in such a fashion. TG Daily should very publicly retract this story and carry the appropriate headline for 2 days.
If they don't, I hope they burn in Helsinki - or not!
---
Update: I find this story significant because the readership of TG Daily are not adverse to letting science into their lives - in fact, they thrive on it! It simply goes to show how deep this 'wishful thinking' goes in our society. If a portion of the nerds doesn't accept it, do you think gun-totin' Bubba is anywhere close to being rational about the science of climate change?
I personally lay blame on all parties, beginning with scientists who are best in the position to know the true dangers of not erring on the side of caution. Like most things in life, it's better to try deal with the risk of adverse consequences, not the certainty of disaster.
P.S. As to the economics...well that's another post on the imbalance of the political and economic (and nascar cultural) systems with the natural systems of climate and resource distribution.
From http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/10/30/175733/02 - ninjarr, on 10/31/2008, -4/+1Who cares if Global Warming is real, who cares if it is us or something else, who the ***** cares.
Either way we are not being a very clean species and we are making this planet dirty as *****.
Whether it has any immediate impacts is a non-factor, whether Global Warming is human inducedis a non-factor.
THERE IS NO REASON NOT TO JUST BE CLEAN ANYWAY. - greenfyre, on 10/31/2008, -7/+4Exposed as hoax "Comfortably Dumb: The TGDaily MIT/Methane Fraud" http://digg.com/environment/Comfortably_Dumb_The_T ...
- greenfyre, on 10/31/2008, -6/+2Nope, even easier to debunk this one as total nonsense http://digg.com/environment/MIT_scientists_baffled ...
