- DNABeast, on 02/22/2008, -0/+3This is ridiculous. Volcanic soil is the most fertile on earth. This is like saying, 'OMG Look, a human child developing INSIDE A HUMAN BODY!!!'.
- docbob84, on 02/23/2008, -0/+0Volcanic SOIL. Volcanic ROCK is about as fertile as... well... a ROCK.

- minorthreat, on 02/22/2008, -15/+6Do you believe those same types of plants were around in 27,767,765 BC? Also, whats up with the BC? When dealing with approx. 30 million years, the 2000 years after the a man named Jesus died seems a little irrelevant.
- IllBeBack, on 02/22/2008, -0/+7Yeah, everything should be specified using the Star Trek "Star Date" instead of using the Gregorian calendar.

- SuperWinner, on 02/22/2008, -10/+26000 years?? Now I understand why god waited 14 billion years before he created us (presumably fashioning each one of us by hand out of god clay) and then placed us (one at a time mind you) here on a planet created specifically for us and our needs...
Its all so clear to me now. - Reziarfg, on 02/23/2008, -0/+1WOOSH!

- geneticlemon, on 02/22/2008, -2/+21Lava fields aren't exactly "barren." There's life teeming in these areas ... in fact, in the wake of old, dead lava tunnels, entire rain forests are capable of existing, since the old lava tunnels provide a natural irrigation system. Not to mention the amount of minerals the molten rock provides once cooled.
- Chrispyc1211, on 02/22/2008, -8/+7Don't go giving global warming deniers ammo, now.
Seriously though, cool pic.- xxTazxx, on 02/22/2008, -0/+2While I personally do believe GW is happening, I don't think thre is any necessity to hide any "ammo", since thats when it becomes less about the science and more about what people happen to believe in, without solid facts.

(I'm originally from Kerala http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kerala "the land of coconuts")
Anyways.. coconut palm don't thrive well in places where the temperature can reach single digits centigrade. So most of the US is off limits to the coconut palm. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coconut#Growing_in_th ...
If you've never had tender coconut water and pulp, you are a lost soul. Its one of the most refreshing pleasures of life.- revjustin2, on 02/22/2008, -0/+8"Kerala [is] among the Third World's longest-lived, healthiest, most gender-equitable, and most literate regions".
Refreshment = enlightenment? Maybe so. - aceallways, on 02/22/2008, -4/+3They have coconuts where I come from too (St. Lucia), there is nothing mystical about them so pull up your pants and go clean yourself up.

- robopuppy, on 02/22/2008, -0/+3Yes. Except that I'd say my job was more like a parasitic leech sucking the life out of me, rather than me (the coconut) sucking the life out of.. nothing... argh... why am I still here

- Adma1, on 02/22/2008, -0/+1Reddit doesn't get obligatory front pages for every Zero Punctuation that gets released. I'm not saying this is a good thing though, I need to know when that ***** comes out!
- underburn, on 02/23/2008, -0/+2Its called R-S-S, and its changing the way millions get content. Look in to it.

- scorpionsblood, on 02/22/2008, -2/+2An African Swallow or it could have been a European Swallow.
- uracre, on 02/23/2008, -0/+1It crawled there
- PovRayMan, on 02/22/2008, -8/+2This is the truth the environmentalists don't want you to know. It does not matter how badly we poison this marble, it'll heal itself just fine. Don't give into the regressive hippie ***** about the oceans, lands or air dying.
- spiritditch, on 02/22/2008, -2/+3Of course you're right. Life will go on. But every subtle change to the Earth destroys many different species, while bringing many new species into existence.
What the environmentalists want is a status quo Earth... Because those people are specist toward the human species. And so am I. - GhostyBoy, on 02/22/2008, -0/+1You are absolutely right!
FREE FOR ALL! I CALL NUKES!
- spiritditch, on 02/22/2008, -2/+3Of course you're right. Life will go on. But every subtle change to the Earth destroys many different species, while bringing many new species into existence.

- jschell, on 02/22/2008, -0/+0Were those your sloppy 'shopped photos you're referring to?
- Etchii, on 02/22/2008, -0/+1Must go on..... must...go on...
Dink dink. - polarbear66, on 02/22/2008, -3/+0i have to say this is a really disappointing dig.
Good photo, but buried for the comments and whole "pheonix palm tree blah blah life goes on blah blah."
Palm trees are some of the most durable trees out there - they'll grow on nearly everything.- 0crabby0, on 02/22/2008, -0/+2Tell that to the ones in my backyard - I've lost two palm trees in the last three years.
- TheGooseyOne, on 02/22/2008, -4/+2Good pic. But why ruin it with the extremely hippie description?
You could say the same thing about weeds poking up through cement. - Thomaschaaf, on 02/22/2008, -1/+2Can I get a print out for my wall?
Thats one pretty picture- JPhilipson, on 02/22/2008, -0/+2Sure... Paypal me like 3 bucks and I'll have it printed at your local walmart :-)
- scrimaxinc, on 02/22/2008, -0/+1ctrl+P
- JPhilipson, on 02/22/2008, -1/+1Yeah... you could do that and I wouldn't really mind... just thinking about quality :-)
- JPhilipson, on 02/22/2008, -0/+25Hey guys, Glad you like my photo :-) I read through some of the comments, thanks for being kind. I never really considered this a 'master piece' but people like what they like right?
If you would like to see more of my photos I invite you to check out my website:

How could I not plug my site? :-) - coit, on 02/22/2008, -0/+2Man, I'd love to have an HDR version of that to capture the clouds in the sky a bit better.
- pbaehr, on 02/22/2008, -0/+6What's amazing to me is that beyond all odds, in the harshest conditions, a plant like that manages to thrive, but if I tried to bring it into my living room it would die within minutes.
I have a black thumb. - Kalei99, on 02/22/2008, -0/+0Congrats, Joe! Awesome pic.
- Greenergrass, on 02/22/2008, -0/+1Yes this is what we all do here at different levels of risks. I really like this pic, so catching.
- jschell, on 02/22/2008, -0/+1yay for Joe! Seriously, if you liked this picture, check out Joe's flickr account and his website. This is by no means his best work. Still amazing though...
- INFINITYPRO, on 02/22/2008, -0/+2JPHILIPSON is a kind soul, it doesn't surprise me that he's capable of capturing a moment such as this! :)
- Xapa21, on 02/22/2008, -0/+0Dang! Congrats, Joey!
- hobbitsareneat, on 02/22/2008, -0/+2Reminds me of Fern Gully or something.
- em00guy, on 02/22/2008, -0/+1if I'm gonna eat somebody, it might as well be you.
- em00guy, on 02/22/2008, -0/+2Volcanic soil is actually very fertile. Especially tropical volcanic soil.
- 808blogger, on 02/22/2008, -0/+2nice shot dude!
- daschupa, on 02/22/2008, -1/+2Yes, the earth will heal herself with the joy of mother rain and the goodness of Captain Planet...wait, isn't earth just a floating rock? I don't get this hippie wisdom. If the earth had any cognitive sense, it would have rubbed us out long ago.
- 776721, on 02/22/2008, -1/+1The problem is..............she is currently undergoing the process to "rub us out".
- cerealjynx, on 02/22/2008, -0/+2Cool, this one goes on the desktops for the computers at work. I find it oddly relevant ;P
